The biggest mountain stage so far.
13 men got away, with Nippo's Fukushima always chasing.
Ivars, Euser, Velits, Fernandez Oliveira, Fertonani, Salerno, Swindlehurst, Capacho, Terciado, Sorenson, Blaudzun, Hammond and Nogaledo.
The Alto de Minas is some 40km long and thinned down the breakaway to Fernandez Oliveira, Fertonani and Terciado.
While in the peleton, race leader Xavier Tondo was a surprise initiator of the first attack.
Caucchioli went with him while Ghisalberti and Kohl also got away.
There were attacks from others too but they came too near the top, and in the descent all of the attackers were brought back in.
Everything would be decided upon the final climb and 10 men attacked at the foot of it but only 2 got away: Pereiro and Pozzovivo.
Their rivals were unable to counter and noone took on the chase so their lead quickly shot up as they caught the leading trio - Pereiro riding ahead of Pozzovivo.
Pozzovivo is slightly quicker up the slopes but not by much and Pereiro is able to keep a gap as they go over the top.
The pack behind seems resigned to handing away this tour to the leading pair - of the team leaders, only Ghisalberti is trying to chase them down, the rest of the riders setting the pace are 'weaker' riders - some of whom had been dropped on the Minas (The long climb) - its not until they passed the KoM point that the peleton's pace got a little quicker.
Pereiro reaches 1km to go, Pozzovivo hasnt quite caught him. The trio which they passed over 5 kilometres a go are still slightly ahead of the peleton.
Pozzovivo ran out of tarmac as Oscar Pereiro took a well deserved victory along with the leaders jersey.
Ghisalberti took 3rd, but the size of the group just goes to show that the pace was much slower than it could and should have been.
