Stage 7 is the second mountain stage of Vuelta a Colombia. Favourites? Those are Henao Montoya, Brajkovic, Perez Cuapio, Pedraza and Danielson. But the last stages showed us the unpredictability of this race. What will happen today?
The first sprint is uncontested. Perez Arrieta takes it over Ansons and Lai. Poulhiès, Saldarriaga, Cioni and Rénier also have a gap on the pack.
And a few kilometers after, they all join together.
Kenda has two men up in the road but that seems not enough as Speirs attack. He is followed by Wacker.
They enter in the group in the steepest part of the ascent.
But Lai, Saldarriaga, Cioni and Perez Arrieta leave the rest behind.
Saldarriga - 1st; Lai - 2nd; Cioni - 3rd in the first mountain sprint.
Ortega, Torres, Terciado, Ratti and Efimkin also attack, maybe just for the mountain points. With these moves, the pack speeds up and Ansons, Poulhiès, Rénier, Wacker and Speirs get caught.
Perez Arrieta can't keep up and is passed by Torres who wants to continue his effort.
Cioni is also dropped as Torres starts to pull the front group.
Torres seems very interested in scoring points as he attacks to be the first in the second mountain sprint. Saldarriaga is second and Lai third.
With 68km to go, Albasini and Anza attack.
They are followed by Mora and Öste-Macdonald.
They easily pass Perez Arrieta.
Torres is, once again, first in the mountain sprint, this time in front of Saldarriaga and Lai. Cioni is also here as he joined during the last descent. They have an advantage of a minute and a half over the chasing group and a advantage of more than five minutes over the peloton led by Starbucks.
During the downhill, it's possible to see that Cioni and Lai were dropped during the final part of the uphill.
With 38km to go, they are caught by the chasing four.
Saldarriaga is the first in the last intermediate sprint.
Mora is third. Anza, Mora, Albasini and Lai are at 1'15''. Öste-Macdonald and Cioni couldn't keep up.
The pack is at 4'49'' of the front duo as they pass the last sprint which marks the beginning of the last and difficult climb.
First attacks in the pack during the ascent. Ortega, Schumacher, Murgoitio, Veloso and Efimkin.
All of them, except Murgoitio who can't join and would later be caught by the peloton, form a group.
Saldarriaga drops Torres. 3'56'' for the pack with 19km to go.
And Albasini and Anza drop Lai and Mora.
Cioni, Schumacher, Veloso and Öste-Macdonald are caught by the peloton. Efimkin and Ortega have a 30 second advantage over it.
With 18km to go, Brajkovic and Perez Cuapio attack!
Henao Montoya and Danielson immediately follow.
And they aren't the only as Moreno and Ratti also leave the pack.
Pedraza and Tenorio do the same.
With 10km to go:
E1 (Saldarriaga)
+49'' - E2 (Torres)
+15'' - E3 (Anza, Albasini)
+1'05'' - E4 (Henao Montoya, Danielson, Brajkovic, Moreno, Mora, Perez Cuapio, Pedraza, Ortega, Efimkin)
+45'' - E5 (Lai, Tenorio, Ratti)
+46'' - Peloton
Saldarriaga takes the mountain sprint. Torres can still be second over Albasini.
The former group of nine elements is now formed by seven as Ortega and Efimkin were dropped in the final part of the climb.
Saldarriaga just had to make a safe descent to win this stage. Brilliant win for the Colombian!
Anza and Albasini were caught by the favourites group but Torres wasn't. He has a small advantage with a thousand meters to the end.
But Brajkovic takes the second place over Henao Montoya.
