Volta a Portugal - Stage 7
roturn
imageshack.us/a/img11/397/ag7n.jpg

After two hard stages it`s time for another flat rated, but as you can see, it`s yet again no flat at all. Except for the first ~40km it`s mainly hilly withsome longer climbs. So let`s see if the sprinters around Lo Cicero will get their chance today. At least the final is after a downhill section.
But after the experience here, Ventoso and Gavazzi must be the favourites.

imageshack.us/a/img818/7425/p5ee.jpg

It took a while, but then 5 riders successfully created a gap.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Houle
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/ken_zps45e45b07.png Villella
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Merino Criado
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Locatelli
Last two might be the most interesting. While the CSC rider is 4th in the KoM with 18 points, Locatelli at least can count 12 points for himself so far.
GC wise none of those five a danger. Villela as best placed is more than 16min back.

imageshack.us/a/img196/7053/fl3k.jpg

Just like in earlier flat stages we see a mix of PFG Armavia, Amex and Prio Porto riders doing the chase. So far only last one had success while the other two struggled with the hilly parcour.
But obviously they don`t give up and will give it another try today.

imageshack.us/a/img513/6942/w8tb.jpg

The two mentioned made it a huge fight on top of the only KoM of the day. In the end the officials had to take video pictures to see any difference. Their decision: Locatelli was a tiny bit ahead and wins it ahead of Marino Criado. Antunes takes 3rd and his first 2 points.

imageshack.us/a/img837/5774/tpqu.jpg

Just after the short descent the first sprint is also reached. But no one is interested here. So it`s again Locatelli being first ahead of Antunes and Merino Criado this time.

imageshack.us/a/img5/9564/pdc4.jpg

PFG Armavia is still being in the first positions with Prio Porto not doing very much. And obviously also Lo Cicero doesn`t want to exhaust his team mates that much as the pace is really slow. 95km left and the gap is up to 10min for the first time.
Will it be one for the breakaway?

imageshack.us/a/img94/8796/5xe6.jpg

Villella leads the group through the 2nd sprint ahead of Houle and Locatelli and by now it`s clear. 50km to go and a gap of almost 13min. This must be enough for them. So the top5 seems set.

imageshack.us/a/img96/9545/ueqc.jpg

Last sprint and Merino Criado just ahead of Locatelli and Antunes. But this is less important here. More important that the peloton is still not acting, so with 20km to go the gap is up to 16'33, which means, that Davide Villella is in the virtual lead right now!

imageshack.us/a/img585/2562/hzmx.jpg

17'14! So the shared work in front is over. Now it`s about the stage win and with Houle in the group it will be hard for the others as he is clearly the best sprinter in there.
Antunes and Merino Criado are the first to attack. But it doesn`t take long and they are caught again.

imageshack.us/a/img560/8467/72mc.jpg

Behind CSC realizes it first, that Villella is having a too big gap here and highering the pace. For Merino Criado this doesn`t mean much as GC wise he wouldn`t make a huge jump and the stage win is still in range.

imageshack.us/a/img6/9030/2jow.jpg

8km left and still a 16'47 gap. But as it is going down again Villella attacks. Might be for the stage win, might be for his chances to surprise all GC riders.

imageshack.us/a/img818/1184/tslj.jpg

The other 4 looked at each other and waited too long. So Villella is already 40s ahead (hidden by the car...).
They really need to hurry if they want to fight for the win as the flamme rouge is not far.

imageshack.us/a/img13/179/zqz7.jpg

There it is. Last corner for Villella and he is having a good gap and looks like the winner of the 7th stage in Portugal.

imageshack.us/a/img513/1271/3nrm.jpg

But behind they are coming closer with every meter. Houle is leaving Antunes` wheel and comes fast on the left now and the gap is clearly smaller now.

imageshack.us/a/img51/5625/iulr.jpg

No problem for Villella. With his well placed attack he can celebrate already before the line and takes a great solo win here. Great success for the young Italian talent and also for his Kappa - ENI team.

imageshack.us/a/img109/2222/jnac.jpg

Houle did wait too long. He was the clear favourite out of this group and shows this with his dominant sprint win for the 2nd. He should have done more to catch Villella.
Antunes comes in 3rd ahead of Locatelli and Merino Criado.
But where is the peloton. Apparently they haven`t even reached the 10km mark, so Villella will make a huge jump here. But how far?

imageshack.us/a/img824/6720/nx2u.jpg

Trains for Lo Cicero and Ventoso with Gavazzi, Tzortakis, Priamo, Costa, Andriato, Kupfernagel, Belletti and Weylandt all behind.

imageshack.us/a/img405/1225/tqpp.jpg

For the first time here Gavazzi is able to beat Ventoso and takes the peloton win but it was just for the 6th. Bad luck for him, he should try again tomorrow.
Tzortakis with a nice 8th ahead of Costa and Priamo.

And nothing to see from Lo Cicero or Kupfernagel, who both came in as 20./21.. So once again not a great sprinter stage, not even with such a low pace.

But more interesting the time. The peloton finished 13'25 behind Villela, so he will gain a lot of time, but less than you could have thought with 20km to go. Still the Italian makes a jump to the 31. and is just 2'20 behind race leader Plaza now.

But there are also bad news for the team. Pierre Paolo Penasa apparently crashed offside the cameras and is heavily injured. So can`t continue the race.

GC wise we had no changes today but with such a huge gap, we have a new team classification leader. It`s Adira-Isq and also the second with Alstom is new just like the CSC team in 3rd.
