The 3rd stage is a flat rated one but when seeing the profile it`s pretty obvious that the pure sprinters have a tough task to stay in front until the finish.
It`s more for those punchy sprinters like Ventoso or Gavazzi. But if the pace isn`t that high, the weaker puncheurs might be able to challenge for the win as well.
The peloton did not allow any breakaway until the first sprint, where Kupfernagel easily won with Gavazzi and Andriato being the only other sprinters going for it.
Just when the sprint was passed a group of 4 were able to gain the important 2min gap:
Locatelli
Altur
Pancake
Atkins
Once again a CSC rider might annoy the rest of the breakaway as Altur was in yesterdays winner group and so he is still in a good GC position as 40. with just +31s to Kritskiy.
This might reduce the chances to survive.
PFG Armavia is still confident that Lo Cicero is strong enough for todays stage and have 3 riders in the chasing work together with a Tinkoff duo.
Smartly Lo Cicero did not go for the sprint earlier as he knows that he will need all his energy for those last two climbs.
Bad moment for Tinkoff. Zakarin, one of Kritskiy`s most important helpers here and 21st in the GC crashes with 120km to go.
But luckily it just needs 5km until he is back in the pack. Hard to say if he is injured but at least he was back on his bike very quick.
85km and still a 6min gap.
Prio Porto for Ventoso and Amex for Kupfernagel also join the work at the front making it even more difficult for the group.
But also for the pure sprinters as the late chase means a higher pace over the climbs and we reach the first of those 3 bumps in the 2nd half.
Altur obviously is interested in the bonus seconds and wins easily while Pancace just rolls over the line as 2nd ahead of Atkins.
A bit different a few kilometers further, where all those 3 riders sprint for the points. Altur takes it once again though while Atkins and Pancake collect more points for the point ranking I guess.
25km left and 1'40 for the group. With the last climb just ahead and as you can see, it`s quite a tough challenge that late in a race, we see PFG Armavia, Amex and Prio Porto still in the lead. Good for Tinkoff as they can save their energy for the harder stages, where the sprinter teams won`t support them.
Even though the gap became quite small, it`s still the breakaway fighting for the only KoM points of the day.
Pancake in the end takes it ahead of Locatelli and Atkins.
Altur had no interest here as he was just going for those bonus seconds.
Less than 12km before the line the group is caught and we already see lots of Prio Porto riders in front. Ventoso surely is the top favourite here.
So it`s also their train, who is more or less the only one.
Behind them Costa in a great position and also 3 UPC guys, while the PFG Armavia and Amex train is a bit too far behind, not because the train is too weak but more due to the sprinters being a few positions too far behind.
Weylandt, Farrar, Traksel, Belletti are still the best placed pure sprinters, while Lo Cicero, Tzortakis and Kupfernagel are another 10 positions behind.
Mendes leads out Ventoso with 2,5km to go. Due to the small uphill it`s a small advantage for Mendes as great puncheur.
Behind them it`s Priamo and Gavazzi for UPC and also Costa, Traksel and Farrar in a good position.
1,4km left and Ventoso already leaves his leadout. Is this too early? The long chain proves that there aren`t many sprinters, that could challenge him, but 2-3 would be enough and Priamo is right behind him, while Gavazzi goes on the left side of the road. Also Costa is a dangerous rider in those sprints.
But Ventoso`s gap is quite big and he is showing why he was today`s stage favourite.
Gavazzi just overtakes his team mate Priamo, while other riders from behind are coming fast to close the gap.
With a full bikelength Ventoso takes the 3rd stage dominantly. It`s already their 2nd stage win here and so it`s already a quite successful home race.
Gavazzi takes the 2nd but it became really close in the end as Belletti was surely the fastest in the end but wasn`t placed as good as the first two.
Costa as 4th once again very close to some bonus seconds ahead of Iglinski and Kritskiy.
Priamo dropped to 8th ahead of Sobal and Houle, while the pure sprinters struggled today.
Farrar (15.), Lo Cicero (39.), Weylandt (42.), Andriato (43.) or Kupfernagel (48.).
Also good news for Altur as he was the last rated rider in this group. This moves him into 5th overall due to his 12 bonus seconds.
