Volta a Portugal - Stage 5
Gustavovskiy
Stage 5 provides the first real test for the GC guys. The Alto da Srª da Graça usually separates the ones who are really here to fight for the victory from those who are only here to make a number. Another question to be answered today is: will i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Konrad keep his yellow jersey? We’re about to find that out.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/stage5.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Cardoso
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Di Maggio
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Taborre
make the BOTD. It takes guts to do so in a day like this, but all are at least decent climbers, especially the first 2 who could make the distance.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s51.png

1st KoM
1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Cardoso
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Taborre

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Gazelle is happy to let the gap grow larger than 5min, but as we hit the first KoM prime i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Barcelona, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Magna and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Bacardi take to the front

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s52.png

2nd KoM
1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Cardoso
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Di Maggio

Sprint
1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Di Maggio
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Cardoso

With 50km to go the pack is reduced to 101 riders and the gap is below 3min. We have to wait 30km more to see the first attacks. It’s i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Iturra who gets things going. Perhaps a tactical play from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Bacardi?

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s53.png

Surprisingly i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Di Maggio has already been left behind from his breakaway companions. He has a 40’’ advantage to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Iturra and 26’’ more to the pack, which only has 73 units at this point. All important riders are still there, including i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Konrad

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s54.png

The last climb finally appears in the horizon. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Jaguar, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Metinvest and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Magna have become the motors of the peloton

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s55.png

At the front i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Cardoso and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo decided that it was time to let go of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Taborre and have built a 2min advantage over the pack. There are only 10km left and they are all uphill now!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo has already shown he isn’t one to wait too long and goes on the offensive. With him goes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bibby. In the meantime i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Di Maggio has been caught.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s56.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Cobo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Kangert follow these 2, but perhaps more importantly, at the back of the bunch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets is suffering with these accelerations and is already losing time. Luckily for him i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Cabreira is with him, pulling him through this tough moment.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s57.png

Turning our attentions back to the front, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo is putting i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Cardoso in difficulty!

He has a nice advantage to the chasing groups and the pack now lead by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Metinvest. We’re approaching the final 5km

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s58.png
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s59.png

And at last we have a glimpse at i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran climbing prowess. His acceleration brings i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych with him, thus stopping the major thrusting force in the bunch.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets group has now joined i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Vasquez. Both are very good climbers but their losses here are ruining their race, especially the latter who should really be using the stage to recover in the GC.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s510.png

Both i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych reach i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bibby’s group who has lost i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Ibarguren now. They have a 1’50 deficit to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo and as we’re inside the final 5km it doesn’t seem likely he’ll be caught.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s511.png

More news from the peloton: it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland now with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Efimkin who make their move.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s512.png

On the other end of the bunch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets seems to have recovered. These are great news for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karcher.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran’s pace is not for everyone in the chasing group, which creates a gap between him, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bibby and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo and the others.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s513.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nieve has also jumped from the pack, where we can still find i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Konrad, unlike i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets who has lost ground again.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran seem to work well together and are about to catch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Cardoso. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo’s gap is just 51’’ now! There are 35’’ more to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych and co. , and 1min more to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland’s group

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s514.png

The last few kms are really tough. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bibby starts losing ground as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych leaves i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Kangert and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Cobo behind. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nieve also has jumped from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland’s group

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s515.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Arredondo is really suffering to maintain his advantage. On the other hand i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo has left i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran! This could be decisive!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s516.png

The finish line is right up there, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo seems really invigorated now…

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s517.png

And it is the Italian who celebrates victory!! What a let down for the Colombian, you have to feel for him, what a valiant ride. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran finishes right after these two. The clock has started ticking…

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s518.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bibby takes 5th, 33s later, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych finishes 6th, losing 1’01, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nieve takes 8th to end a brilliant comeback alongside i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Cobo, who still manages to finish ahead of him.
9th is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Kangert and 10th is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Cardoso. This group finishes 1’40 after the winner.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s519.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Efimkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Naibo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Ibarguren still finish ahead of the pack, but with the punishing deficit of 3’33

At the back of the main group we find i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Konrad, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets. They can’t avoid losing 4’33 to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo though.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s520.png

In a last-minute and extremely controversial decision the race’s jury has decided not to award any KoM points for the last climb. Sorry guys.
