Volta a Portugal - Stage 4
Gustavovskiy
Stage 4 takes us from Trofa to Fafe in another hilly journey

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/stage4.png

Today’s break isn’t formed before the 1st sprint. This provides a chance for the sprinter to grab a few more points:
1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Rizza
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Richeze
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Avermaet

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s41.png

There seems to be little interest in featuring the break of the day. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Lane is the sole adventurer to make the effort. This is going to be a long stage for him

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s42.png

By the first KoM prime the gap stands at 2’42. In the pack, some interest surges in the 1st of two category 3 climbs as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Hatanaka launches a vague of attacks. He is followed by:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Tamayo Martinez
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Wang
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Mehr-Wenige
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Hung

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s43.png

1st KoM
1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Lane
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Hatanaka
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Tamayo Martinez

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Hung is quickly absorbed, but the other 4 persevere.

By the next KoM, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Lane has been caught. The peloton is 2’38 in arrears.

2nd KoM
1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Hatanaka
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Tamayo Martinez
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Lane

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s44.png

1st Sprint
1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Wang
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Mehr-Wenige
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Lane

Meanwhile major news at the back: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Konrad has just fallen! Once again Gazelle is forced to go TTT-mode.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s45.png

He eventually makes it back to the pack, but there are questions regarding his physical integrity. The escapees didn’t care for this event and continued forcing the pace, as now with less than 24km to go they still have 2’50 of advantage.

The break rolls in pretty organized at the last intermediate sprint. They feel they have a chance here and prefer to cooperate instead of battling each other for minor honours:

2nd Sprint
1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Mehr-Wenige
2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Tamayo Martinez
3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Hatanaka

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s46.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Tamayo Martinez opens the hostilities though with 11km to go as we get a premature chance of visiting the flame rouge banner. The ever shrinking gap stands at 1’45.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s47.png

A while later some riders in the peloton follow Tamayo Martinez’s endeavours and try an attack, taking advantage of the 3.5% gradient:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s48.png

Almost all other well-positioned riders try but no one else gets to build a gap. With less than 8km to go this is the race status:

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s49.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Jaguar takes the initiative of chasing the escapees here. 5km to go and the gaps look stabilized. Only news is that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Lane has lost contact with the trio chasing Tamayo Martinez

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s410.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/eub.png Tamayo Martinez enters the final 2km but with the uphill finish all gaps look very fragile…

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s411.png

The Colombian gets caught just has the others start sprinting. They’re decent sprinters and have a special aptitude for hills, which should make it pretty even. Behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo opens the sprint with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland on his wheel and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran in third

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s412.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Hatanaka gets an edge on the others, asi439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo storms uphill. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland has lost ground to i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.pngÚran

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s413.png

In the pack i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Rabon leads the charge, followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Kangert, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Efimkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Craven, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Cobo, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png De la Fuente, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Morton, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Bibby, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.pngDe la Cruz, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Vinhas, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych and others. Poor i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Lane has been swallowed.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s414.png

But the hero of the day in none other than Japanese champion i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Hatanaka. He dared to attack midway through the stage and got through a well-organized chase to get to the perfect position and deliver a perfect sprint. Great victory for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Meiji!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s415.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo’s impressive sprint got him to the first group. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Úran finishes ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland…

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s416.png

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Rabon was quick enough to almost eliminate the gap between these 2 and the pack. Let’s see what the judges think of this…

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/s417.png

They think i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Rabon did enough to cancel the difference. This probably isn't going to change much in the grand scheme of things, but that sure is worthy of a pat on the back from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popovych
