Todays stage is very interesting and might have a big impact on the GC. The last climb is too short and too steep for some of the stage racers. It`s a perfect puncheur climb and should favour guys like Valverde or Spilak for example.
Some other GC riders aren`t the best on these kind of climbs and will need a slower pace there.
Several riders try to join the break today. No question this might be their best chance to be successful as they are far behind in the GC and the course might suit a breakaway.
Kruopis
Martens
Nordhaug
Ghysellinck
have a short gap to the next trio with
Nerz
Bookwalter
Redondo
It seems like the peloton will allow them to get away. More than 1'30 for them when they fusion to a 7 rider group.
Ghysellinck, Kruopis and Martens take the points at the first sprint. But none of them play a big role in the GC, so there is no fight for it.
The peloton for some reason decided to increase the pace after that and so it`s Martens trying to attack out of the group when the peloton is almost catching them.
But B&O finally has the full control and the gap grew again from 20s to 2min now.
UBS and Pokerstars are partly supporting them. 80km to go and up to 5min. Not sure if the later is thinking about Holloway surviving the hill here or if they ride for Rujano today.
20km later the gap is still at almost 6min which means that Nordhaug is the virtual leader. He started the stage as 37th with +4'12. So the peloton needs to higher their pace surely and this might mean a hard time for the weaker puncheurs within the GC guys as we will soon going uphill.
40km to go and we reach the Cat.3 climb. The breakaway still has a 5'10 gap. Time for to attack. He is one of the best puncheurs here and as 12th in the overall with only a bit more than 1min behind Pluchkin this is very dangerous.
Going up the shorter of the last two climbs Roche has a 30s gap. Several GC teams are working now and share the work very well.
Nerz, Ghyselinck and Martens is the order at the Cat.3 climb. They still have a nice gap to the peloton but it will be interesting how much energy they already spent.
Several GC riders start with their attacks to get rid of weaker puncheurs. Also some riders surely need to gain time after a weak 3rd stage. Probably the biggest disappointing there was Tenorio who initiated these attacks. He is followed by Sicard, Pedraza and Sella.
No success for the last 4 riders. But we still haven`t reached the Cat.1 climb when Valverde attacks. The Spaniard has a nice race so far. But if he wants to win the GC again he probably needs todays stage to play out his advantage on the hills.
Nerz, Kruopis and Ghyselinck take the next sprint points but none of them is really careing about them. Now it`s only to survive against the closer coming peloton.
Tenorio and Spilak attack again and try to close the 20s gap to Valverde. Roche still has a nice 50s gap.
For the first time this race a sign of Austrian Kohl as he joins Valverde and Tenorio. Spilak even flew past the Spaniard to be a bit ahead of them.
Roche and even the breakaway are already in sight now.
The last sprinters just lost contact such as Van Stayen or Holloway, so one thing is for sure. We won`t see a real sprint finish today.
Roche finally found contact with the group and also Spilak is almost there. 4km left of this climb and they still have a 1min lead to the next trio and another 30s to the peloton.
Tenorio is brought back. Also Kohl and Valverde are not having a real gap now. Roche and Spilak splitted the front group completely and leading the race now with Nerz and Nordhaug a bit behind.
Roche takes the full points at the top ahead of Spilak, Nerz and Nordhaug. Strong ride by the Irish so far.
Valverde comes over the line next with Kruopis and Martens behind him.
Still a small gap to the peloton for this trio.
The climb led to a big selection and we miss several GC riders in the first group. Missing riders are Gomez Marchante, Castano, Lloret, Henao, Van den Broeck, Kohl, Pedraza, Schwab, Eastman, Costagli, Faiers and even another group behind Intxausti with a horrible day.
5km and 20s left for the duo in front. Behind the 19 rider group around Pluchkin we already have a 50s gap to the Gomez Marchante group. This might destroy the GC hopes of a few more riders.
It was pretty obvious. With 2km to go the favourite group closed the gap and Roche/Spilak are caught. Unlucky as they might have deserved a bit more after this efford.
Spilak, Roche, Velits, Pluchkin and Rujano with a small gap. Once again Valverde isn`t positioning himself very well.
Pluchkin having a nice gap now and might win his 2nd stage. Velits is coming fast on the right now with Schleck and Denifl on the left.
Velits had the best energy management in the end and takes this win quite easily ahead of Pluchkin. 3rd is a big surprise. Martens relaxed a bit after being in the breakaway all day and finishes on the stage podium ahead of Denifl and Schleck. 21 riders including many favourites but also the former breakaway finishes in this group with Pluchkin, Velits, Valverde, Contador, Schleck, Amador, Spilak, Rujano, Roche and Sella being the best placed riders now.
Van den Broeck leads the next group including Henao, Gomez Marchante, Kohl, Castano, Pedraza and Lloret over the line. 61s for them. Not too horrible but definitely not as planned.
Intxausti finishes with +3'37 together with Schwab and Costagli and loses all top5 ambitions.
Even worse for Eastman, who is even another 30s behind in the next group, what brings him even out of the top30. Definitely he has to attack tomorrow.
