10 men went clear: De Maar, Lhotellerie, Posthuma, Bak, Leukemens, Knees, Joly, Cardoso, Engels and Hernández Gutierrez.
Cardoso won the first intermediate sprint as Cycling24's Lhotellerie is dropped already! So now down to 9, the break would be working well together if it wasnt for Bak.
Bak is not helping with the pace as for some reason Ferrari have still got a couple of guys setting the pace at the front. So each rider carries out attack after attack, even Bak attacks at one point:
None of the attacks work and eventually Bak decides to do some work and it all calms down.
De Maar takes the first KoM points of the tour on the basis of taking a relay at the right time. Telefonica's Cardoso was dropped on the climb.
Devolder did attack on the climb, with Castano and Rubiera. The latter 2 were caught soon enough but Devolder would not be caught for another 40km.
Bak took the 2nd Intermediate Sprint and the break reached the final decisive climb with a 3'39 lead and just 16.6km to go. Surely they wont make it?
The peleton reaches the climb and cometh the attacks!
Mancebo, Brajkovic, Danielson, Vandevelde, Cioni and Gomez Marchante are the first to attack, then comes Kloden and then all the others, with Di Luca being one of the last to attack. They soon catch the break who all seem to be struggling with 4 red bars.
Joly holds a slight lead over fellow escapists Engels and Hernández Gutierrez who have been jopined by the favourites, led by Contador. Other formner escapees hang their heads in pain as the favourites come by - but race leader Vandevelde has already been dropped.
Back in the pack, Cycling24 realise that theyve missed the move and Rujano and Cobo attack, Mayo and Luis Leon Sanchez are also on the move.
Contador leades the elite group of 13 over the top, with Rujano in the next group having attacked too late.
Di Luca, Gomez Marchante, Cioni and Joly struggle at the start of the descent but Posthuma slows for his Gazzetta teammate and the 13 come back together. Posthuma is surprising still there considering he can be seen in an early screenshot suffering with 4 red bars.
The 13 riders are: Kloden, Mancebo, Kashechkin, Brajkovic, Danielson, Rasmussen, Contador, Cioni, Joly, Gomez Marchante, Dekker, Di Luca and Posthuma. Rujano is pursuing the group in a vain attempt to limit his losses.
The group lines up for the sprint:
And Rasmussen wins!
Vandevelde comes in 15h, 1'54 down, so Dekker is the new leader.
