First up is the team time trial, and the unlucky team to head off first today is Eurosport. With the unenviable task of setting the first time, by the end of the day they had done better than expected, only losing 15 seconds.

Running through the rest of the teams, until we get to the favourites, by the end of the day here's how we look:

19th

Is it any surprise? British Airways comes over the line dead last at 45 seconds. Clearly this time trial won't be deciding the overall race.


18th

Warner Brothers comes in at 37 seconds.

Its the one man show at La Gazzetta dello Sport, as Dennis Van Wynden leads for over half the race for them.


Down to 15th place, and we're already under the half a minute barrier.

Festina roll in a respectable time considering their time trial line up. 15th at 30 seconds.


14th

Phillips - Hummel can't squeeze any more time out of their cool kit and have to settle for 14th and a loss of 23 seconds.


13th

Unicef, also stylishly suited can't do any better than Phillips time wise either, 23 seconds loss for them too.


12th

Domina Vacanze settle for 12th, and a small loss of 19 seconds.

B&O couldn't knock out a very good time today. 18 seconds down.



On to the contenders for the day. The top ten all did astonishingly close times, with Eurosport leading at the intermediate checkpoint all day long. No one came close to their first half. However, the same can't be said for their end time.

Eurosport down in 8th place at 15 seconds.

Just below them, in 9th and 10th spots respectively, are Rabobank on the same time, and American Suzuki a further two seconds adrift.

Whilst Rabobank were tipped to be big favourites, Gesink only did one turn on the front. And while that did last 8 or so kilometres, it just wasn't enough for the win. 3rd place at the intermediate suggests they used Gesink too early.

Credit Lyonnais were a bit messy around the edges, but smashed out a very fast time. Unfortunately they had to settle for 3rd, at 2 (or 3) seconds back (depending on who you listen to!).

Wildcarders Energie - Diesel did well in their first outting at the Pro Tour level, coming in well inside the top 10 with just 13 seconds off the win. 7th for them.

6th place went to Accumalux - Huez, who astonished everyone, and even the riders themselves were amazed. 10 seconds lost.

Lipton Ice Tea came in one place better, not being able to live up to the hype surrounding them. Maybe they'll do better tomorrow with the pressure off their shoulders?

A loss of just 7 seconds.

SIC Radical - Timberland couldn't squeeze on to the podium, just missing out by 2 seconds. 4th place for them.

We know who came third - Credit Lyonnais, so the question remaining, is who won?

Virgin came across the line in 18'48 which set a new best time, half way through the race, and they were just 3 seconds back at the intermediate checkpoint. By using Boom and Plaza in the latter half of the race (before dropping them) they succeeded in gaining a podium place.

Wikipedia, THE favourite to beat was the penultimate team to go, and boy did they go. Was it enough?

NO! Second place for Wikipedia, behind Virgin Media! Just two seconds the difference. But as we've seen in Qatar, Virgin are no pushovers in the TTT.
