Tour of Vancouver - Stage 3
CountArach
i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-1.jpg

A much easier day than the profile might imply faces the riders today. The main climb is only an average of about 3%, with a maximum of 6%, which shouldn’t put too many riders into trouble. After yesterday’s botched effort, the sprinters will be wanting to force this one down to the line. Thankfully for them there is no wind today.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Dabrowski is the first attacker today. His team isn’t really known for its sprinting outside of Hoffman, so this is really not a huge surprise.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-2.jpg

Very quickly he is joined by a trio of riders:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Polito
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Young
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Houle

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-3.jpg

The four riders pull out a decent gap but several others aren’t content to leave it at just the four. The next attackers are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Sparling
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Schelling
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Fraile

These attackers are run down by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Afonso. Prio-Porto stand to gain by bringing this to a sprint as they bring one of the favourites in Avelino. Indeed another flurry of attacks follows and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Afonso chase them down too. With the pace so high the four initial attackers are caught and we are back to the whole group together.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Possoni and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Young launch an optimistic attack just 2km before the sprint point but the pace is too high so they get nowhere. So we get to the first sprint and strangely most of the big names don’t go for it. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Fabbri takes the points ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Keukeleire and then a big surprise in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Sano, who sprinted well yesterday.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-4.jpg

With that out o the way three riders are allowed to get away and create a gap:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Houle
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Young
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Kinoshita

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-5.jpg

Seeing these three get a 40” gap several try to work their way up to the break:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Gil
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Sparling
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Schelling
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Delgerbayar
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Polito
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Fraile
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Possoni

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-6.jpg

This group is far too large and so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Beltran brings everyone back, including the three who were already away. Well we need a break so four riders give it a go:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Tiernan-Locke
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Strgar
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Fraile
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Possoni

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-7.jpg

They get 1 minute on the bunch and then there is another attack:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.png Beyer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Delgerbayar
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Polito
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Kinoshita

However, 8 would be too many, so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Anacona brings this back. No one else wants to get involved and so the gap goes out as the pace drops and we have our four man break of the day.

We hit the second sprint point of the day and it is a close contest. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Tiernan-Locke continues the hard work of Boeing to dominate the intermediates and takes the most points, ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Strgar and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Fraile. The peloton rolls over 4’07” later.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-8.jpg

The second sprint approaches and this time it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Strgar who takes it, ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Possoni and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Tiernan-Locke. It is perhaps as close as an intermediate sprint ever could be.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-9.jpg

With 34km to go the peloton still hold 2’35” as they sprint for the final intermediate. It is close once again and this time i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Possoni takes it ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Tiernan-Locke and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Strgar.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-10.jpg

With 10km to go the gap has dropped to 20” and so i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Fraile goes solo from his companions. They are happy to watch him go.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-11.jpg

And of course this can’t go on for long as with 6.7km to go Beltran catches him and we are going to have a bunch sprint.

With 3km to go we have 2 sprint trains. On the left of the road we have:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Dempster
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Aguilar
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Serebriakov
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Avelino
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hutarovich

And on the right we have:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Keizer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Castaneda
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Gatto

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-12.jpg

With 2km to go the two lead riders come off their trains. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Dempster has extended the lead and has set this up to perfection.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-13.jpg

Behind the right-hand train i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Gatto launches with 1.4km to go. He has i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Weylandt on his wheel.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-14.jpg

With 1.2km to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Serebriakov is forced to go – i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Zabel has really brought this back and is setting i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Castaneda up brilliantly. Meanwhile i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Gatto is looking quick in the middle.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-15.jpg

As i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.png Castaneda launches with 800m to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Gatto comes past him. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos launches from his wheel and is going very quick!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-16.jpg

With 600m to go i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi starts to come around i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Serebriakov but moving incredibly quickly is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Avelino!

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-17.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Avelino comes past and is looking superb. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hutarovich is just drafting his wheel and seems unwilling or unable to come around him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-18.jpg

And a big win for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Oscar Avelino, making up for yesterday’s farce.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Vanc3-19.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hutarovich rides his wheel into second. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi gets a well-deserved podium as reward for his good positioning. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Serebriakov holds on for fourth and in fifth is a huge surprise – race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kritskiy! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Gatto is in sixth. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos takes seventh and the top ten is rounded out by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Weylandt, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Brambilla and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Keukeleire.

No change in any jerseys today though i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/tcs_zps625f9315.png Kritskiy has an even stronger lead in the points jersey and is probably unlikely to lose it from here.
