The last, 6th stage of ToSA this year is 3rd hilly one and definitely the one where we can expect some GC changes. As you can see, profile is pretty interesting with two, not that steep climbs as two last ones. Will be interesting to see who'll step out and maybe make some surprise.
Once again, breakaway was expected and there were 4 guys, once again. Chaves, Sambris, Sakalou and Boonratanathanakorn were in front today. All of them has some points in KoM classification, so fight for points is expected here.
Although they really gave their all to win these KoM sprints, Santambrogio just attacked on first and only KoM rated as '1', got 5th place and secured polka-dot jersey 'til the end of the race. Maybe a good consolation for awful race and start of the season generally Kazzinc had.
3 teams really controlled the breakaway all the day. Kenya Airways as the team that has yellow jersey currently, RBC prepared situation for potential Bellis attack today, and Meiji going for Zaini.
35 kilometers to go, Jiao and Weening attacks. Although they aren't the very best guys, they can be very serious contenders if peloton lets them go and that's exactly what they're doing.
10 kilometers after and nothing happens. These 2 above are slightly catching the breakaway and one guy noticed that, so he's trying to go on his own. It's, Boonratanathanakorn who places an attack!
And wow! It doesn't stop there! We can also see few guys from peloton attacking, but who they are? Hmm, Bellis, Monfort, Konovalovas and Ben Nasser are the only ones that are out of their seats so far.
They quickly made a group in front of peloton and didn't want to spend their energy on acceleration, so they started going on relay turns. Some of the favourites, including Hatageka and Hatanaka started chasing in peloton.
The breakaway group, as well as Boonratanathanakorn finished that hill and they're now on downhill, around 10 kilometers to go. This is the situation on the road currently:
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Peloton Boonratanathanakorn Jiao Bellis Skujins Weening Monfort Gautier Chaves Konovalovas Kelderman Sakalou Ben Nasser Hatageka Sambris Bobridge Zaini Dowsett ...
8 kilometers to go and Boonratanathanakorn is absolutely safe on first position, as he has about a 30 seconds advantage over 2nd group and about minute and a half over the peloton, which should be more than enough for him.
Jiao and Weening caught the 2nd group and they're now constantly setting the pace, which is killing the guys that were whole day in front.
Also, Bellis, Monfort, Konovalovas and Ben Nasser were getting closer and closer to that 2nd group. Meanwhile, attack from the peloton! Dowsett launches it and he's followed by Hategeka, Vogt, Vastaranta, Hatanaka, Skujins, Gautier and Shushemoin. Still, Kelderman and Roy are sitting in the peloton without reacting.
Meanwhile, on very top of the race, Boonratanathanakorn is the first one to pass under 5km to go banner. He's looking exhausted, but he's still riding fast.
2nd group of Jiao/ Weening and BOTD in it, are the next one to pass under the banner. Group of yellow jersey, Ben Nasser and 3 other favourites are getting closer and closer to them and it's now almost 100% sure that they'll catch them.
Meanwhile, Skujins and Dowsett are the guys that attacks in 3rd group.
Gautier and Bobridge are still sitting and waiting for a perfect moment to make a move.
In the meantime Boonratanathanakorn enters the banner zone which means 3 kilometers to go for him. He's really looking good on these final serpentines. Nothing can go wrong for him now.
Down the road, it becomes more and more interesting! 2nd and 3rd group merges now and the favourites almost immediately jumps on the top of that group, to set the pace.
Skujins and Dowsett are also very close and it's most likely that they're going to join the group soon.
Meanwhile, Gautier and Bobridge as well as all others guys in 3rd group are waiting. Everyone's looking each other, but no one decides to attack. This definitely isn't good for them and final GC for their teams.
In the meantime, Bellis wasn't really most patient guy in the 2nd group, so he attacks! Monfort, Konovalovas and Ben Nasser are out of their seats and are trying to follow that. Yellow jersey is looking absolutely great so far.
2 kilometers to go for 3rd group aswell and finally Gautier and Bobridge are attacking. Guys behind are trying to catch that, but it's not going great for them...
Boonratanathanakorn is the first one to pass under 1km to go banner. He's the winner now, 999meters are now just routine for him. Such a great win for Magna - Ryanair.
However, more interesting fight is happening down the road. 2nd group, group of yellow jersey is now starting the sprint. Ben Nasser is actually the first one to start it and he's looking the best. I won't predict anything, as much can happen in next few hundred of meters, but it really looks like he already has the win in the bag.
Meanwhile, in the third group, Gautier and Bobridge (out of picture) opens the sprint. No way anyone can beat them here, but it was pretty bad tactic for this duo today. They're going to lose some time in GC, surely.
And, only few seconds after, Boonratanathanakorn could finally celebrate the win. Absolutely deserved, perfectly timed and brave attack!
Ben Nasser sprints and gets the 2nd position and secured GC win here. Totally deserved and great tactic for Tunisian. Pretty good refresh for Kenya Airways after a bad seasons start.
Interesting fight for 3rd, 4th and 5th place. At the end, in very close sprint, Monfort gets last position on podium, just in front of Bellis on 4th and Konovalovas on 5th.
Skujins, Dowsett and Weening finishes 10 and 19 seconds behind these guys, on 6th, 7th and 8th position.
Bobridge and his teammate Jiao finishes as 9th and 10th, 58 seconds after the winner of the race and 34 seconds behind yellow jersey.
Hategeka, Vogt, Vastaranta, Hatanaka, Gautier and Shushemoin all finished in the same group. Peloton took it easy, as Kelderman and Felline shared first 2 positions in mass sprint there.
By this, Tour of South Africa 2014 is finished. What a great race this was!
