Second stage of Tour of South Africa 2014 edition is the first hilly one and it's just like made for riders that want KoM jersey here. Riders are starting in Plettenberg Bay, making few circuits around and then finishing on last, 3km long hill on Knysna. It's definitely the stage where we should expect some gaps, but it can also finish with hilly-sprint. Chances are 50/50.
As there's a KoM checkpoint just few kilometers after the start, few guys attacked early. Sakalou was quickest to react, so he got the first place on that KoM passage. Fominykh gets the 2nd, while Santambrogio places an attack on the top of the hill and gets 3rd. These 3 decided to create breakaway of the day group, as none of the guys from peloton want to chase that.
On the next KoM checkpoint, Santambrogio who won it and Sakalou who finished 2nd on it dropped Fominykh. As he's much worse in terms of climbing than the 2 guys in front, he just dealt with it and slowed down until peloton caught him.
All rest KoMs , 5 of them were finished in the same order as 2nd one (above), but now with few chasers from peloton taking 3rd. Some of the guys that won 1 point by passing as 3rd from peloton are: Kastrantas, Ben Nasser, Dahlberg and Lane.
KoM 3,4,5,6,7 [Cat 4] 1. Santambrogio 2. Sakalou 3. A peloton guy
Nothing was really different in the only sprint checkpoint today, as the order was the same as in all of these KoMs. Nikolaev was the guy that was 3rd on that sprint checkpoint, but he easily got it without any serious fight for it.
Sprint 1 1. Santambrogio 2. Sakalou 3. Nikolaev
Despite the fact that they fought for every KoM point, Santambrogio and Sakalou always found a way to get in one group and co-operate over and over again.
But all of that was controlled by the guys in peloton. Multiple teams were active, while RBC, Swedbank and Gazelle were most active ones. It was clear for who these guys are working. At the point this picture was taken, there were around 40 kilometers to go and break still had around 3 minutes of advantage. Definitely not enough.
And then, out of nowhere, BOOM in peloton! Ben Nasser decided to stretch the legs of the guys behind a bit and he attacked on the downhill!
In about same time, but few kilometers in front, Santambrogio attacked and soon got advantage over Bulgarian National Champ.
Ben Nasser kept his place in front of the peloton for some 11-12 kilometers, but he couldn't manage to do any more than that. 18 kilometers to go and peloton catches him.
And just when everyone thought they'll now rest a bit before final hill, a favourite attacked again! It was Skujins this time! Few guys such as Ben Nasser and Bobridge tried to follow that, but they gave up from that idea soon.
Soon after that point and around 14 kilometers to go, Skujins managed to catch Santambrogio. These 2 decided to co-operate and they're very, very dangerous now.
Meanwhile, big mess in peloton. Gazelle are trying to defend their yellow jersey, while there are few guys from Project: Africa, RBC, Magna, all working for their leaders.
8 kilometers to go and first group has around 30 seconds of advantage. It's getting really, really interesting. However, Skujins decides to get rid of tired Santambrogio. It went pretty good, as Italian just couldn't keep the pace with young Latvian. It's now peloton versus Skujins!
5 kilometers to go and Skujins is somehow managing to keep the lead. It's still around 30 seconds. None of the leaders want to chase behind and that might cost them win here.
And, around 3,5 kilometers to go, Swedbanks youngster was first one to start climbing on last Knysna hill. Peloton is basicalyl breathing on his neck, but he's somehow managing to stay in front, all of this time.
Meanwhile in peloton, RBC and Puma are most active. Seems like none of the favourites except Bellis gets this attack seriously. That may cost them alot!
And just as peloton started upping the pace, Ian Boswell attacked! Is he really strong enough to finish in front of the peloton and catch Skujins? Well, no, as he gives up from attack idea quickly.
Basically, by every 5-10 meters, peloton was one second close. One and a half kilometer to go, young Latvian is still somehow managing to keep his position, but it definitely doesn't look too good for him. If some leader decides to attack, I am afraid the stage will be lost for him.
1 kilometer to go and Skujins is officially the guy who passes it first. Someone's sprinting and maybe even attacking down the road. This definitely doesn't look good for him.
And, it was Bellis! 2012 winner of this race seems to find the perfect balance and form after pretty bad first stage. Hategeka, Felline, Mandri, Boswell, Oss are all on top of the peloton, in front of the favourites such as Dowsett, Bobridge, Gautier, Zaini and Monfort.
After the riders passed the last corner, it's now only "straight" to the finish. Well, not that straight, as the percentages are huge on this final hill. Skujins still has a lead, but Bellis and Bobridge are getting more and more close. It will be tight, definitely!
250 meters to go and Skujins is still going strongly, but he's struggling. 2 guys behind are seriously accelerating now. What's going to happen!?
100 meters to go and Skujins raises his hands and celebrates something. Is that celebration for victory, second or even third place? We can't tell at the moment, we still can't see white finish line.
And yes, he celebrated the win, as he was the first one to cross the line! Only half of the wheel size in front of Bellis and maybe 2 of them in front of Bobridge. What a huge win and what a great debut for this youngster!
Felline uses great positioning from his team, Puma - SAP and gets the 4th position in front of Gautier on 5th!
Many riders sprints for rest of the points behind and Houle was surprisingly best one of them, as he got 5th. Behind him, there are some strong names such as Monfort (7th), Bol (8th), Zaini (9th) and Meintjes (10th).
Rest of the peloton group, including some favourites, finished calmly without sprinting. Pretty strange, but it's PCM at the end.
Funny stuff is that Swedish Champion, Dahlberg somehow managed to celebrate his teammates win on this deadly hill.
