Tour of South Africa - Stage 2
admirschleck
Second stage of Tour of South Africa 2014 edition is the first hilly one and it's just like made for riders that want KoM jersey here. Riders are starting in Plettenberg Bay, making few circuits around and then finishing on last, 3km long hill on Knysna. It's definitely the stage where we should expect some gaps, but it can also finish with hilly-sprint. Chances are 50/50.

As there's a KoM checkpoint just few kilometers after the start, few guys attacked early. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Sakalou was quickest to react, so he got the first place on that KoM passage. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Fominykh gets the 2nd, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Santambrogio places an attack on the top of the hill and gets 3rd. These 3 decided to create breakaway of the day group, as none of the guys from peloton want to chase that.

On the next KoM checkpoint, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Santambrogio who won it and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Sakalou who finished 2nd on it dropped i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Fominykh. As he's much worse in terms of climbing than the 2 guys in front, he just dealt with it and slowed down until peloton caught him.

All rest KoMs , 5 of them were finished in the same order as 2nd one (above), but now with few chasers from peloton taking 3rd. Some of the guys that won 1 point by passing as 3rd from peloton are: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Kastrantas, i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/ken_zps81e5ead7.png Ben Nasser, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Dahlberg and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Lane.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/oz_polka_zps6e0c6147.gif KoM 3,4,5,6,7 [Cat 4] 1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Santambrogio 2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Sakalou 3. A peloton guy

Nothing was really different in the only sprint checkpoint today, as the order was the same as in all of these KoMs.i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Nikolaev was the guy that was 3rd on that sprint checkpoint, but he easily got it without any serious fight for it.

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/points_zps63f449ab.png Sprint 1 1. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Santambrogio 2. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Sakalou 3. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Nikolaev

Despite the fact that they fought for every KoM point, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Santambrogio and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Sakalou always found a way to get in one group and co-operate over and over again.

www.dodaj.rs/f/1F/CY/4goyuuaz/2014-04-23-032320-greens.jpg

But all of that was controlled by the guys in peloton. Multiple teams were active, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png RBC, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Swedbank and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Gazelle were most active ones. It was clear for who these guys are working. At the point this picture was taken, there were around 40 kilometers to go and break still had around 3 minutes of advantage. Definitely not enough.

i.imgur.com/EPgUCKL.jpg

And then, out of nowhere, BOOM in peloton! i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/ken_zps81e5ead7.png Ben Nasser decided to stretch the legs of the guys behind a bit and he attacked on the downhill!

www.dodaj.rs/f/1L/D6/29w7nY6v/2014-04-23-032741-greens.jpg

In about same time, but few kilometers in front, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Santambrogio attacked and soon got advantage over Bulgarian National Champ.

www.dodaj.rs/f/Q/qi/QdwSG9H/2014-04-23-032833-greens.jpg

i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/ken_zps81e5ead7.png Ben Nasser kept his place in front of the peloton for some 11-12 kilometers, but he couldn't manage to do any more than that. 18 kilometers to go and peloton catches him.

www.dodaj.rs/f/3A/83/1ZAUG2nV/2014-04-23-032918-greens.jpg

And just when everyone thought they'll now rest a bit before final hill, a favourite attacked again! It was i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins this time! Few guys such as i1332.photobucket.com/albums/w605/FroomeDog99/ken_zps81e5ead7.png Ben Nasser and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Bobridge tried to follow that, but they gave up from that idea soon.

www.dodaj.rs/f/u/HJ/3IP2PjIg/2014-04-23-032952-greens.jpg

Soon after that point and around 14 kilometers to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins managed to catch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Santambrogio. These 2 decided to co-operate and they're very, very dangerous now.

i.imgur.com/dr4TJxN.jpg

Meanwhile, big mess in peloton. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Gazelle are trying to defend their yellow jersey, while there are few guys from i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh579/aidanvn13/micro_zps8e5b012e.png Project: Africa, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png RBC, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Magna, all working for their leaders.

www.dodaj.rs/f/2B/kA/1c5o7k9V/2014-04-23-033103-greens.jpg

8 kilometers to go and first group has around 30 seconds of advantage. It's getting really, really interesting. However, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins decides to get rid of tired i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Santambrogio. It went pretty good, as Italian just couldn't keep the pace with young Latvian. It's now peloton versus i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins!

www.dodaj.rs/f/1X/8W/i5vw6GP/2014-04-23-033116-greens.jpg

5 kilometers to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins is somehow managing to keep the lead. It's still around 30 seconds. None of the leaders want to chase behind and that might cost them win here.

www.dodaj.rs/f/2E/RO/2kXBUQlR/2014-04-23-033209-greens.jpg

And, around 3,5 kilometers to go, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Swedbanks youngster was first one to start climbing on last Knysna hill. Peloton is basicalyl breathing on his neck, but he's somehow managing to stay in front, all of this time.

www.dodaj.rs/f/3E/vB/3d4HJ2QY/2014-04-23-033230-greens.jpg

Meanwhile in peloton, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png RBC and i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Puma_zps595ccf8f.png Puma are most active. Seems like none of the favourites except i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Bellis gets this attack seriously. That may cost them alot!

www.dodaj.rs/f/25/2b/j6o7xFH/2014-04-23-033241-greens.jpg

And just as peloton started upping the pace, Ian Boswell attacked! Is he really strong enough to finish in front of the peloton and catch Skujins? Well, no, as he gives up from attack idea quickly.

www.dodaj.rs/f/2P/bU/1TofvzHD/2014-04-23-033303-greens.jpg

Basically, by every 5-10 meters, peloton was one second close. One and a half kilometer to go, young Latvian is still somehow managing to keep his position, but it definitely doesn't look too good for him. If some leader decides to attack, I am afraid the stage will be lost for him.

www.dodaj.rs/f/3n/5f/4VkZBvnj/2014-04-23-033317-greens.jpg

1 kilometer to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins is officially the guy who passes it first. Someone's sprinting and maybe even attacking down the road. This definitely doesn't look good for him.

www.dodaj.rs/f/w/wr/1OM2EXQi/2014-04-23-033331-greens.jpg

And, it was i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Bellis! 2012 winner of this race seems to find the perfect balance and form after pretty bad first stage. i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh579/aidanvn13/micro_zps8e5b012e.png Hategeka, i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Puma_zps595ccf8f.png Felline, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Mandri, i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/heineken_zps4e73d058.png Boswell, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Oss are all on top of the peloton, in front of the favourites such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Bobridge, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Gautier, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Zaini and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Monfort.

www.dodaj.rs/f/R/qT/4z3j6wWO/2014-04-23-033347-greens.jpg

After the riders passed the last corner, it's now only "straight" to the finish. Well, not that straight, as the percentages are huge on this final hill. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins still has a lead, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Bellis and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Bobridge are getting more and more close. It will be tight, definitely!

www.dodaj.rs/f/3k/UG/47Nyut1/2014-04-23-033401-greens.jpg

250 meters to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins is still going strongly, but he's struggling. 2 guys behind are seriously accelerating now. What's going to happen!?

www.dodaj.rs/f/1w/qa/2ZTEjRaK/2014-04-23-033415-greens.jpg

100 meters to go and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins raises his hands and celebrates something. Is that celebration for victory, second or even third place? We can't tell at the moment, we still can't see white finish line.

www.dodaj.rs/f/11/Ff/bBUfcD0/2014-04-23-033454-greens.jpg

And yes, he celebrated the win, as he was the first one to cross the line! Only half of the wheel size in front of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Bellis and maybe 2 of them in front of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Bobridge. What a huge win and what a great debut for this youngster!

www.dodaj.rs/f/s/EI/3aWCCNu3/2014-04-23-033518-greens.jpg

Felline uses great positioning from his team, Puma - SAP and gets the 4th position in front of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Gautier on 5th!

www.dodaj.rs/f/3e/z1/29hkBu3S/2014-04-23-033533-greens.jpg

Many riders sprints for rest of the points behind and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Houle was surprisingly best one of them, as he got 5th. Behind him, there are some strong names such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Monfort (7th), i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Puma_zps595ccf8f.png Bol (8th), i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Zaini (9th) and i1252.photobucket.com/albums/hh579/aidanvn13/micro_zps8e5b012e.png Meintjes (10th).

www.dodaj.rs/f/X/OK/1nBs9lak/2014-04-23-033541-greens.jpg

Rest of the peloton group, including some favourites, finished calmly without sprinting. Pretty strange, but it's PCM at the end.

www.dodaj.rs/f/p/AN/3qMYxEAS/2014-04-23-033708-greens.jpg

Funny stuff is that Swedish Champion, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Dahlberg somehow managed to celebrate his teammates win on this deadly hill.
