One of the very, very rare mountain team time trials in professional cycling. ~10km are pan flat before the last 8,5km are going up the mountain.
So who is going to be the strongest today? A team with many climbers to dominate the uphill part, a team with time trialists to dominate the first half or a good mix of both?
Pokerstars is on the road early. Their leader Roche was active in the hills without much success. Now he has to fight as he clearly is not as strong on the long climbs as others.
They had a very good start but slipped backwards on the climb. Other teams surely will be faster.
More or less the opposite with Simply Red Bull. 16s behind them after the 1st. Only 4s behind at the 2nd and in the end ~30s ahead!
Rothaus next and Gomez Marchante was limiting his loss fairly well as one of the pure climbers in the field. Today though a huge disaster (unfortunately).
Last at the 1st, last at the 2nd and also far off at the finish. In comparison to Red Bull though only 1min behind but stage favourites are others and could be faster as well.
Lotto was more or less in the middle of the pack today. With no real GC rider they are probably one of those teams, that don`t care a lot about the stage result. They proably hope to get one of their riders in a break later on.
Good Energy with a very strong ride here. Faiers, Costagli and Scarponi are all not the very best. Last one was the only one not really losing time on the hills. But with a good climbing team they proved to be very strong today. Medium placed at the first cut, then becoming better and better on the climb to take the new best. By far! 40s ahead of Red Bull.
Tinkoff probably had hoped for a bit more so far as Kritskiy was one of those riders that lost a bit time in the hills as he wasn`t within yesterdays best in the end.
The start was promising with good times at the checkpoints, but then they lost energy and dropped again. While being the 1st of the started teams at both points, they are almost 1min behind Good Energy on the top!
B&O with Keinath had a pretty anonymous race so far but they are still in a good position. Medium at the beginning, awful at the start of the climb but pretty decent again in the end. Good for Keinath. Just a bit behind Red Bull in the end beating Tinkoff or Pokerstars.
Here a short cut as all teams have finished at the first checkpoint. So take a look on the results there:
Gesink, Spilak, Machado, Dekker, Contador all with decent starts while Sella, Velits and Amador probably could have done a bit better. How will it go on?
Wikipedia with top10 results all the time. Decent time trial for them. Pinot and Talansky though don`t belong to the best climbers and a good GC will be hard to achieve.
Wildcard team Swedbank hopes for an improvement by Lövkvist in the mountains. Today a pretty average performance being just ahead of Tinkoff.
Dekker had a great start into this race with Dekker slowly collecting bonus seconds, which gave him the race lead after 3 consecutive podiums.
Not that good today though. The start was okay but as soon as the mountain came, the speed was not that high. Obviously the support was not as strong as for other teams. 1'21 behind Good Energy says enough.
Ouch. This went horribly wrong. Good start but then a pretty bad 2nd checkpoint and in the end Machado was pretty alone and always had to wait for his teammates. With one rider less they surely had a huge disadvantage but this can`t be the only excuse for losing more than 2min and this way being 2nd last just beaten by Santander! Machado has a hell of a job now to better his position in the GC now.
Not as bad but also far from ideal for Van den Broeck and the Bpost team. They were constantly in the 2nd half today but finish lower than hoped I guess. Just ahead of Rothaus means they are losing on almost all others.
So let`s take a look on the 2nd checkpoint before coming to the last teams:
Becherovka and UBS Swisscom with huge 2nd parts taking over. Festina, Project 1t4i and VW still being in a strong position though with Gesink, Sella and Spilak.
Volkswagen really improved hugely on the climb as seen at the checkpoints. Eventually even the fastest team on the uphill only. Having a 2nd big climber with Monsalve surely helped Sella to gain lots of time. Just 3s behind Good Energy is a great result gaining lots of time on most others.
Spilak no longer has the yellow jersey and is wearing green instead today. The checkpoints were pretty good already and Dees, CAruso, Goos, Lecuisinier and Boily even improved on the last part to move Spilak to the 1st! 7s faster than Good Energy and this might bring him the yellow jersey back after just one day.
Vesuvio can`t be happy with Suaza and Medvedev. Horrible performances in the hills. Today an okay result somewhere in the middle losing 48s on Festina, which means almost a 2min gain on Santander! But in the mountains their climbing duo has to try something to get anything out of this race.
Project 1t4i comes in just like all other teams. Most of them waited for their 5th man and this meant a pretty low pace in comparison to what the leader is able to ride. So for most teams there were more than those 5 just a bit behind as seen here.
Being 1st at the flat part but dropping on the climb could not mean any good, doesn`t it? Wrong. They found their 2nd energy in the end and finish in 2nd! Same time as Good Energy just 7s behind Spilak, which is surely something the team can live with. Solid performance gaining on lots of better climbers.
UBS with lots of pressure. 5 riders in the first group with Amador while the other 3 are a bit behind. They need all of them now. The start of the climb was promising but they couldn`t keep it until the end. 33s loss to Festina, which is more than you had expected after the 2nd.
Dan Martin already had a stage win here which makes it a good race for the team. But now he has big GC ambitions and while the first sections weren`t that fast, the last surely was. 22s behind Festina in 5th position! This will keep Martin in a very good GC.
So far König was the more active. But Velits is the better climber and is supposed to take over now. They had a huge 2nd section moving them into the lead but then they lost a lot. 1'03 in the end which means not even a top10 result. Velits now has to do a lot to gain time again.
Last but not least AKER with Contador. Good first, okay 2nd and great 3rd section I would say. Only 6th in the end but 27s loss is not that bad. Ahead of many others like Amador, Velits, Machado, Kritskiy etc.
