Hardest stage so far and it should also tell us something about the real favourites. It`s hilly rated but is probably not far from the first mountain stage with a long Cat.1 before the shorter uphill finish, which is everything but easy as you can see. A steep first part before it`s calming down a bit before the finish and a very tough last kilometer, where time gaps are supposed to happen. No GC rider should have a bad day here as he can clearly lose the fight for the best positions.
A very strong breakaway today:
Teklehaimanot
Mat. La Lavandier
Kozontchuk
Costagli
Except for the Russian, who is further below, all are +1'33 in the GC. Last as best climber might be the biggest threat with 3 mountain stages following to end the race.
Already at the first KoM sprint one rider attacked out of the peloton obviously going for the jersey. It`s not other than the best puncheur in this field: Claeys.
The Belgium grabs the last few points and apparently does not slow down afterwards and instead tries to join the breakaway even though those are ~6min ahead.
Cat.2 Kozontchuk10 Mat. La Lavandier8 Teklehaimanot6 Costagli4 Claeys2 Sprint Teklehaimanot6 Mat. La Lavandier4 Costagli2
In especially Pokerstars and Festina took care of the pace behind. They slowly reduced the gap to under 4min with Claeys still in between.
Coming closer to the ascent also Pendleton`s joined them hoping for a strong result by Dan Martin.
At the real start of the Cat.1 the gap to the actual break is at ~2'30 with Claeys being right in the middle.
And it`s the point where we have the first huge GC attack. It`s Roche hoping for a time gain today as it`s the last stage where he has an advantage over the rest, while the real mountains might show his dropping a bit.
He is immediately followed by the yellow jersey of Spilak.
Obviously the other GC candidates have to react now and so many more are following:
Martin
Machado
Monsalve
König
As Vueling and UBS immediately higher the pace the first four slow down a bit and it`s only the co leaders König and Monsalve getting a bigger advantage.
The top though is reached by the breakaway first and so La Lavandier is taking more points and looks confident to take the KoM lead today. That said, Kozontchuk has grabbed the same amount of points but won the lower category.
Behind them Monsalve joined Claeys ahead of a smaller group around the yellow jersey including all other recent attackers, who are still having a gap actually.
Cat.1 Mat. La Lavandier16 Kozontchuk12 Costagli10 Teklehaimanot8 Monsalve6 Claeys4 Machado2
We need to check the situation a bit now. 4 riders in the break are still having a small gap to the next group of 7 attackers as mentioned above. Then the peloton of still more than 100 riders a bit later. No big gaps though.
Behind the peloton the usual dropped riders Medvedev and Solis once again.
During the descent it was Sella trying to jump to the group ahead but without success. In the end all of them except for the morning break were caught again.
Sprint Teklehaimanot6 Costagli4 Kozontchuk2
Only two riders are left with a 50s gap. It`s not Costagli though as Kozontchuk and Teklehaimanot are the last men standing at teh 5km mark already in the uphill part.
Claeys is not giving up yet as it`s a last chance for him more or less. He goes with 5km to go followed by Monsalve and Martin.
All other GC riders are within the first rows and higher the pace not allowing them to create a bigger gap.
Only pure climbers left in the group such as Suaza or Gomez Marchante are not in the best position. But they are fighting and still sitting in the group.
Machado and Spilak are the next accelerating a bit more. They are not far from Claeys while Monsalve is caught already. Martin and the duo in front still a bit further ahead.
Amador, Roche, Gesink, Dekker, Monsalve, Contador, Sella, Van den Broeck, König, Velits are all in the first positions.
Also Keinath, Kritskiy, Faiers, Gomez Marchante, Scarponi, Lövkvist or Anton are in a decent position.
Very small gaps only with 10s to Claeys, another 13s to Martin and then 15s to the leading duo.
Martin has reached the leading duo. So no more hope for a win for those. Claeys is more or less caught by the big favourites, who are creating small gaps to the riders behind as the peloton is slowly becoming selective.
22s for Dan Martin. Can he really make it?
Behind a group of only 9 riders including most of the biggest favourites while some have missed this split.
Here the 9 riders:
Spilak
Machado
Amador
Contador
Gesink
Dekker
Roche
Teklehaimanot
Kozontchuk
So being caught by this acceleration are for example Kritskiy, Sella, Van den Broeck, Velits alongside a lot of others.
Flamme Rouge and behind Martin the big fight starts as Spilak has accelerated another time. Who can follow?
Also some more GC riders have closed the gap as we have 20 riders being counted within the top group now including also the mentioned caught riders above as also Monsalve or Keinath.
But it`s Daniel Martin holding on for the win. Big result for the Irish ahead of all those big names.
11 riders though were within the same time.
Gesink as 2nd, Dekker as 3rd also take more seconds, which means the Vueling veteran is scoring a lot of these and is also taking yellow this way.
Spilak, Contador, Machado, Amador, Velits, Van den Broeck, Roche and surprisingly Scarponi all avoided losing time.
All others like Sella, Kritskiy, Keinath etc. have lost 40s, which might be okay for the weaker puncheurs and pure climbers. For some GC riders though it`s unnecassarily loss.
