Tour de Romandie - Stage 1
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0001.jpg

The first stage already is one for the puncheurs and GC riders. Also the pure climbers will have to fight to avoid a time loss or at least keep it as small as possible.
While the hardest sections are on the first half there is a late Cat.2, which could be used for a well timed attack.
Alongside the GC riders, we have some superb puncheurs here. Riders to watch are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Roche, who has to attack in the hillier stages as the mountain stages will favour the other riders a lot more. Also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pro.png Gesink and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Spilak are riders who perform well on the hilly routes and could already create a gap to the other GC riders.
Also to mention is the race` top puncheur with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Claeys. The Lotto rider is probably going for stage hunting here as they don`t really have a top GC candidate.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0003.jpg

The start immediately leads the peloton on a short climb, where some riders attack the KoM points. In the end it`s Morabito, Ghyselinck and Brutt taking the 5-3-1 points. But none of them is able to keep a gap or eventually did not want to.
All are back in the peloton soon afterwards and it took a while until the next attacks.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0008.jpg

With the 2 longest climbs of the day starting a duo has created a nice gap. Those are:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bauer
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png El Fares
3min behind them another rider attacked for the KoM points and decided to chase them solo. It`s the winner of the first KoM prize i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Morabito also having a 2min gap to the peloton.

So here a short overview over the two KoM`s and the sprint in between:

Cat.2
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bauer10
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png El Fares8
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Morabito6
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Chtioui4
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fes.png Vasyliv2
Sprint
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png El Fares6
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bauer4
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Morabito2
Cat.3
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png El Fares6
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bauer4
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Morabito2

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0012.jpg

UBS having this goal as their win goal and so they are obviously working for Amador here. Pokerstars with Roche and Project 1t4i with Gesink are also obvious teams for the work in the peloton. At times also Festina for one of the biggest race favourites in Spilak is doing some relays.

With ~80km to go Morabito is just 1min ahead of them as he never was able to make it to the group and his biggest goal probably was to collect some KoM points.
Also El Fares slowed down after the last KoM and this keeps Bauer in a solo breakaway.

At the 2nd sprint all but Bauer were caught already while the Kiwi still has a 3min gap. In the fight for the sprint points we see the sprinters for the first time but actually only two are really going for them.

Sprint
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Bauer6
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vue.png Van der Sande4
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Ahlstrand2

Afterwards Festina was doing a lot alongside the other three teams and so the gap became smaller and smaller until it was less than 1min with the last climb starting.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0023.jpg

Just at the start of the climb we see some attacks and the race really starts it seems. So far not the biggest names but you shouldn`t underestimate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bec.png König, who could get a good result on his own here. He is followed by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gusev, who is less of a danger despite being a good allrounder.
Some more co-leaders decide to follow as we have three more:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hoogerland
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/srb.png Monsalve

And this also leads to the first leaders to do something as well as the gap is just ~20s at the moment and it`s the perfect moment to jump to them.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pnd.png Gusev
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/swi.png Amador
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pok.png Roche

So we have some of the best puncheurs and with Amador a top GC rider in the attack. Behind it`s mainly Festina chasing them as also Project 1t4i as Vanendert was not going all in and is also back. Just like some others as actually only Claeysm Roche and König were able to really create a gap.

Also the sprinters, who might have thought about a possibility to survive the hills are taught different. While most are struggling in the last rows, two already have lost contact with Rothaus duo Nizzolo and Krieger. But they are not alone as also some climbers are in a later group, who surely had hoped to stay with the best:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/btc.png Solis
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Medvedev

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0039.jpg

More and more groups are dropped now as only 45 riders are left in the favourite group chasing the duo Roche/Claeys with 5km to go. König was just caught and so it`s only those two having a 21s gap.

But let`s come back to the dropped riders as we have some more climbers struggling on the hills and this time in especially Good Energy and Vesuvio are hit:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Faiers
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gde.png Costagli
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/vsa.png Suaza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/wik.png Mai
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lap.png Moschella

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0047.jpg

Only 3,6km before the line the duo is also caught and so we will see a group sprint of 47 riders left including all real stage racers!
Behind you see the groups of climbers and sprinters still fighting to reduce the loss, which is about 1min at the moment. This said another group including the earlier dropped Medvedev and Solis already has most than 4min.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0049.jpg

Lots of Festina and Project 1t4i riders in front as there was no real organization without sprinters left.
Fastest riders here is probably Kolesnikov.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0051.jpg

But it`s actually Spilak going into the lead now ahead of Castroviejo. This looks like a huge acceleration as he is so much faster than all others.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Romandie/mg2014_romandie_1_PCM0053.jpg

What a gap. The others must be happy that it was not big enough to get a time gap. But it`s a big win for Spilak and a first sign what he is able to do here. He really wants the win and now he already has the yellow after the first stage.

Behind him Castroviejo keeps his good 2nd today ahead of Dekker, who is taking some nice seconds his way. But it`s still 47 riders within a few seconds obviously and the harder stages are still ahead.

The Suaza group in the end lost 1'13, which is not too bad for the pure climbers, while Solis/Medvedev with more than 4min are more or less out of the GC fight.
