The 2nd mountain stage in a row. This time it`s an individual effort needed as we go up the Col du Lein on a 25km time trial.
It`s not really a question that the climbers can gain time today but with the first half being pretty flat and probably favours the better time trials it will be interesting to compare the different kinds of stage racers. On one hand there are the likes of Gesink, who can climb and time trial excellent and on the other hand there is yesterdays winner Alarcon. Brilliant climber but weak against the clock.
So what kind of rider is prefered?
Krasnoperov is the first rider in todays coverage. Alarcon`s team mate is a good climber and decent time trialist as well. So his time could be a nice time to compare later.
Being 5th at the 12km mark behind mainly good time trialists he was really strong on the uphill part as well and even overtaking Kulhavy here.
With climbers like Raisin, Medvedev or Panayotov being in the provisional lead on top of Col du Lein, it already shows that the pure climbers will do well here.
But Krasnoperov beats them all by 40s! So being a decent time trialist as well will definitely help you as those 40s were mainly gained on the first half.
We make a huge jump towards the top15 as no other rider was able to beat Krasnoperov so far. Faiers came close with +8 but then already Costagli with more than half a minute back.
Gesink was the unluckiest guy yesterday. Not only losing the yellow jersey but also all chances of a top result due to a crash. Today he at least shows what he could have been able to reach plus he seems to be not injured.
Huge time and 1'06 faster than Krasnoperov. Being a good time trialist really gives you a nice advantage, which is very bad news for race leader Alarcon, who needs to climb super fast then.
In front of him Lloret was just keeping a small gap to him losing almost 2min on this TT.
Valverde had a quite disappointing stage yesterday. He was expected to be one of the race favourites but already lost most chances to reach a top10. And today is no difference as he only finishes 4th behind Gesink, Krasnoperov and Faiers. 1'15 behind Gesink!
Amadro was also a disappointment. Capable of winning the race he is already 4'02 behind.
His 3rd at the intermediate already shows his strength today and he likes the climbing part even more. It`s really close but in the end only the 2nd 8s behind Gesink, who seems to be well recovered.
Rujano is surely not the best time trialist. Even more surprising his good 9th after the flat part.
He must be on a super day as he continues to impress on the climbing part. Huge surprise as he takes the lead beating Gesink by 4s!
Just a few would have expected him above Gesink and Amador today.
Similar situation for Sella. A bit better climber, but a bit weaker time trialist. Good comparison to Alarcon actually.
14th (+36) at half time but then going fast on the climb setting a new best time. +6 to Rujano.
Denifl is 10th at the moment and on a good way. But already at the 12km mark he disappoints. Almost 1min behind and more important weaker than Sella or Rujano, who are weaker time trialists.
1'39 behind Sella on the top!! Behind Valverde or Faiers and definitely much weaker than expected. This might ruin his chances to get a top10 here.
Brajkovic had a pretty anonymous race yesterday but still sitting in 9th overall. Good time at the half and not too bad on top as well. 5th so far but already 58s behind Sella.
Van den Broeck might have one of the strongest yesterday when he fought his way back to the front group as only rider. Different than Valverde, Amador or Gesink he secured his chances this way.
His 18th at half time shows that he might be more exhausted than some others. But he finds a good rythm on the climb and takes a decent time 3s behind Krasnoperov losing ~1'20 today.
Machado sets a top5 at 12km and continues to ride strong. 3s faster than Sella using his time trial advantage.
Yesterdays group of 12 is slowly splitting in 2 parts.
Contador was the initiator of yesterdays deciding attacks and got rewarded with the 6th overall and just a bit behind the podium spots. Today he won`t get a top result being +39 top Machado. But more important for him ahead of several others gaining nice time on Brajkovic or Denifl for example.
Uran did well yesterday and also at half time. But he then lost a bit of his power obviously going too fast early on. In the end he is losing a lot of time finishing 59s later than Machado and 22s behind Contador.
Andy Schleck is the strongest climber here but just an average time trialist within the favourites. Still he impresses with a 6th (+20) at the intermediate. Going up he doesn`t get slower and sets a new best time. 10s faster than Machado.
Spilak starts the coverage of the actual podium riders. He beats Schleck`s time before the climb by 4s. Not very much actually when seeing his advantage on this terrain. And as expected he loses time during the climb and finishes 38s behind him. 7th at the moment ahead of Contador and Uran but behind Sella and Rujano.
Pluchkin is one of the best stage racers in those one-week races. At the 12km mark he sets the 2nd best time just being beaten by Robert Gesink. But his uphill section was much faster than the Dutch and it`s close to Schleck. But it`s not enough. 9s are missing, which means that Schleck climbed 21s faster than him. Still the 2nd so far keeping his winning chances alive.
Alarcon as last today and he already struggles at the intermediate. 44th there with +1'08 and already losing his jersey. He was expected to lose some time there but not that much actually. Sella for example as 14th there lost 30s less there.
So yesterdays effort obviously pays back.
The time is running and he is already losing his jersey with quite a bit still ahead of him. In the end it`s only the 16th with +1'49 behind Valverde. Only Denifl was weaker of the top15 riders.
GC wise we have lots of changes obviously. Schleck takes a small lead over Pluchkin by just 3s. Behind them Machado, Spilak, Contador and Sella. All of them passed Alarcon, who is 7th only now. Rujano, Uran and Brajkovic complete the top 10 with Van den Broeck and Denifl coming next.
