Out on the road today following the tight prologue which leaves Wikipedia looking to try and defend
Taylor Phinney
as the leader of the race. It is conceivable that the young American could lead from start to finish but the level of competition here is white hot.
There is a pretty tough early climbing section which as two rewarding climbs in terms of King of the Mountains points with the points awarded as a 16-12-10-8-6-4-2 climb for both. After the second of the two climbs we have a fairly long run into the 40 or so kilometres which involve some medium climbs.
It is a very attacking start and we have seven riders hovering at about a minute clear from the pack on the first categorised climb.
The composition of the break:
Matej Mugerli
Rafael RodrÃguez Segarra
Matej Vysna
Philip Deignan
Dietmar Mehr-Wenige
Rinaldo Nocentini
Enrique Salgueiro
They are struggling to find a pace that draws them away from the pack but are just about holding clear as
Thibaut Pinot
leads his team leader up behind.
It is Diegnan and Mehr-Wenige who go for the King of the Mountains points as Festina's Rodriguez Segarra slips back to the pack.
Vesuvio's young German rider comfortably takes the maximum 16 points ahead of Diegnan with Vysna of Milka taking the 10 points for third.
The break are able to ease out a more comfortable gap following the climb and settle into a good rhythm. The breakaway is turning into a really fruitful one for Mehr-Wenige who takes the first sprint ahead of Mugerli and Salgueiro...
... and moves into a commanding lead in the King of the Mountains battle by taking the second climb. Deignan is second with Vysna third again too, these three on 32, 24 and 20 points respectuvely may have cashed in a decent reward for their teams today.
With the gap between five and seven minutes clear two teams decide to play a tactical card by attempting a optimistic bridging move with punchy riders
Marcel Wyss
and
Aleksandr Efimkin
It doesn't cause much of a ripple in the pack and after a determined 20km chase these two join the lead 6 to make eight breakaways.
It's an impressive move by Efimkin and CTour rider Wyss, Saab Scania making quite a nice move here justifying their wildcard status. They are five minutes clear of the pack and the roads are not exactly the best for chasing they do have chances.
The pack are certainly in chase mode however with
Daniel Teklehaimanot
leading the chase. It's business time for Dekker and his crew they are not going to mess about in stage races.
Also helping the chase are B and O, Festina and Jack Wolfskin which is probably good news for Wikipedia. Up front Efimkin takes the second sprint ahead of Salgueiro and Mugerli which makes him the virtual leader on the road a couple of second ahead of Salgueiro, Wyss and Mehr-Wenige.
Onto the last categorised climb that tops out with about 30km to go and the gap is still at around four minutes. Some of the riders on the break are beginning to slip away Vysna has done all he can for Efimkin and Mugerli is finding this one a bit too tough.
Back in the pack it is perhaps indicative that the pace is not as high as it could be as some sub-leaders are sent out on sorties.
Michael Albasini
Santo Anza
and
Jianhua Ji
manage to move away briefly but are drawn back in.
Realising that things are getting frantic behind Efimkin lifts the pace in the lead group only King of the Mountains elect Mehr-Wenige can follow.
It is impressive climb by the duo who are holding a four minute lead on the pack that just are not chasing hard enough. Efimkin takes the top of the 10-8-6-4-2 climb with Mehr Wenige getting second to have a total of 40 points for the day. With Diegnan and Vysna failing to score here he can feel he has taken a giant step to perhaps winning that jersey.
In the pack the sorties are getting more serious as Santander's leader
David Arroyo
attacks.
But as soon as someone attacks the pace is lifted, it reduces the pack somewhat down to 70 or so riders. None of the favourites are dropped, other than
Andrei Amador
who was following Arroyo in an attack before... it seems to be a technical problem for the Costa Rican. This is a blow for the UBS squad who have looked in the mood to do something today.
Efimkin and Mehr-Wenige get through the hilly section with still more than three minutes to play with as the other breakaways fall steadily back to the bunch. Having watched none of the other favourites make a move race leader Phinney gets twitchy near to the final downhill section and decides to force the pace.
Mehr-Wenige has largely followed Efimkin since the Russian lifted the pace on the categorised climb and as we approach the finish seems poised to come past as we approach the finish Efimkin has saved a sprint.
The Milka man takes a well worked win and will take the leaders jersey as well.
Phinney leads the pack over for third, the downhill proved difficult for overtaking and only Spilak was near to the American, but Phinney comfortably outsprinted him.
Phinney is timed at 3.17 back from Mehr-Wenige and Efimkin, the latter rider possibly an outside threat for the overall now.
Amador finished at 5.20, his chances of a decent finish in tatters having conceded over two minutes to the key players.
