Welcome to the 2nd stage in Belgium. Today most probably a sprint stage as it is as flat as it could be. Only climb is a short ascent coming out of a tunnel.
So who else but Tom Boonen should be todays favourite? Well, maybe Sam Bewley or one of the other many top sprinters here but honestly, everything but Boonen would be quite a surprise.
9 riders in todays breakaway. Just like yesterday Santander again very attentive, in especially now after losing their top sprinter and maybe only chance of some points.
Duran, Gallego Martin
Ratto
Chtioui
Riber-Sellebjerg
Kittel
Sys
Reimer
Gallardo
Obviously none of them is a real danger with Duran being the best placed as 51st but more than 7min behind.
A bit weird tactic by Santander here. Although they have two guys in the breakaway Allonca attacks and pulls a strong rider with him. Franzoi is a solid cobbler who lost some time yesterday but a stage win today might make him happy. Also Gilanipoor tries to bridge the gap but is riding solo.
First sprint is won by Reimer ahead of Gallardo and Kittel but without very much fighting.
With 132km to go the group became a bit bigger. Next to the 12 mentioned riders also Lhottelerie and Bagdonas joined them and make it a group of 14.
The sprinter teams still "relax" and let Pendleton do the work for race leader Gilbert.
But with 98km to go and a gap of 7min it`s time for Nestle to take care for a sprint. Top favourite Tom Boonen surely ordered them to the front.
2nd sprint and again Reimer ahead of Gallardo and Kittel. This time at least a small fight between these 3.
64km to go and still a gap of 5'26.
So Nestle gets some support by the Wikipedia squad. With Juan Van Heerden they have one of the fastest guys behind Boonen.
Reimer also takes the last sprint of the day. Gallardo and Kittel again couldn`t follow his acceleration and follow next.
With 26km to go the gap is down to 2min and a sprint finish becomes more and more probable.
At the same time 3 riders don`t want to wait for a sprint and attack from the peloton. Kolesnikov, Burghardt and Kneisky.
3 good roleur, who will try to join the break and reach the finish before the sprinters. In especially Burghardt can`t be happy with his result yesterday as he might have lost his chances for the overall podium already.
With 15km to go they reach the group and are still 1'30 ahead of the peloton. This will be a very close one here.
And for some reason Nestle stopped their pace making. Is Tom Boonen not feeling good today? Too exhausted after yesterdays hard stage?
Good for the sprinters that Wikipedia is pulling hard now going all-in for Van Heerden.
The breakaway is almost caught with 6km left but more attacks disturb Wikipedia`s work. Baugnies and De Vocht attack and higher the already fast speed another time.
But with 3,5km everyone is caught and finally we can see the sprint trains being formed. On the left Van Heerden is pulled forward by Summerhill and Van Garderen. Grillo is just behind him while Pozzato, Boonen and Avelino are 2-3m behind still having good chances while other sprinters like Sam Bewley are very far behind and probably won`t have chances.
You can already see Van Garderen leading the peloton with Van Heerden and Grillo, Avelino and Pozzato just behind while Boonen had some problems and is still in a bad position.
Summerhill pulled a small gap to the rest with Van Garderen doing the last work for his sprint leader and only Grillo, Pozzato and Avelino made the jump to the Wikipedia train. Pretty sure the winner will come from these 4 now.
Maybe a bit too early Van Garderen rides to the side leaving Van Heerden in the wind with 1,4km to go.
A very fair sprint men vs. men here. All 4 are directly next to each other.
Van Heerden can`t accelerate another time and is losing against the other three where Pozzato took the lead now.
Tom Boonen miscalculated the last kilometers today. He is coming fast, very fast actually but his bad position destroyed his ambitions today.
Sp it was a clever win for Pozzato. The Italian continues his great form here and takes important bonus seconds. Well done. Avelino and Grillo complete the podium with Van Heerden coming in 4th a bit disappointed after all the work his team was doing today, while Boonen comes in on a frustrating 5th only. Well, at least he sprinted a bit different to Bewley as 55th.
Pozzato also takes the overall lead from Gilbert and leads by 8s now.
