Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 8

We leave from Portsmouth and head to Hastings for the last stage of this year's Tour of North Europe. A stage which is designed, on paper, for pure sprinters even though it's quite long, which means that only a crash or some unpredictable event could change the current overall rankings.

Boonen won the previous 2 mass sprints and he is the main favorite to take this one as well even though riders such as Roelandts or Avelino, riders with a clear taste for mass sprints, are also present

After many attacks in the early kilometers of the stage, seven riders made it into the day's breakaway: Gautier (Lafarge), Sys (JW), Nicacio (Energie), Flens, Vandewalle (La Gazzetta), Kvist (Festina) and Lindgren (Ikea).

They never had a big gap in front of the pack though and with 100 km to go, WB and Lipton moved to the front of the pack to start the real chase, just like in the previous 2 flat stages. Boonen delivered in both stages, makings his team - mates work worth, but Avelino still needs to confirm why Lipton work so hard for him

1st Intermediate Sprint:
1. Rick Flens (La Gazzetta)
2. Klaas Sys (Wolfskin)
3. Kristoff Vandewalle (La Gazzetta)

2nd Intermediate Sprint:
1. T. V. Kvist (Festina)
2. Rick Flens (La Gazzetta)
3. Kristoff Vandewalle (La Gazzetta)

Again the sprinters teams timed their chase perfectly and with 10 kilometers before the finish line all escapes have been caught. Shortly after that, the first moves from the sprinters were made in the pack.

Weylantd tried to set - up a very early train for Roelandts, with Boonen and Avelino also following the black shirts train, while Renshaw and Breschel were trying to keep it close as well

But all those trains failed miserably, including a third train made by Speirs for Baden Cooke, and when the actual sprint started, with 3 kilometers to go all the big sprinters were caught behind

Giaux was the best placed sprinter, but he was leading the pack with 2.5 km to go, which was clearly not a very good position for a classic sprinter. Cancellara and Sammy Sanchez were right behind him, both having won at least one stage previously in the race

Under the one kilometer banner, Cancellara made his move and took the lead from the Belgian rider, who is looking for a new contract for the next season and missed a great chance to show what he is capable of

Inside the final kilometer, Marinangeli, another rider searching for a new team, looked to be really strong and entered the battle for the second place, with Giaux and Samuel Sanchez, as Cancellara was too strong to be caught

What a great way for Cancellara to finish a race, which he dominated and never looked like going to miss the overall win. In the end, Giaux held on to the second place in front of Marinangeli, with 2 puncheurs - Sanchez and Van Garderen - completing the top 5 of the stage

Cancellara's third stage win and Boonen's complete failure brings the Swiss rider another jersey - the green one, even though he will have to share it win the Belgian, both having scored 114 points. Still this is probably a big disappointment for the WB rider who was leading the rankings by a long shot before the last 2 stages.
