Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 6

Yesterday we went from Belgium to France and today we will go the other way around, arriving in Gent in a stage designed for sprinters. Boonen won the previous flat stage and he has a big chance to take this one as well

Six riders went in the day's breakaway, but none of them post a threat to Cancellara's yellow jersey: Sys (JW), Timofeev (Wikipedia), Faiers (Vesuvio), Knees (CdC), Taillefour (Lafarge) and Schroder (Domina)

Since the closest riders to Cancellara in the general classification from the breakaway group were more than 12 minutes behind the Swiss rider, Carmeuse weren't interested at all in chasing them down, which gave the escapes a maximum advantage of almost 11 minutes

But as soon as they reached that gap, Warner Bros. and Lipton took control of the pack, just like in the third stage, and slowly started to reduce the gap to the breakaway group

The escapes never stopped believing they could make it all the way to the finish but they were eventually caught right after the banner that marked the final 5 kilometers of the stage

Bazajev (SE) and Renshaw (Starbucks) were leading the main sprints inside the the last 5 kilometers, for their leaders Grillo and Breschel

The Sony train proved to be way stronger than the Starbucks one an took control of the pack with 3 kilometers to go, Avelino, Boonen and Castaneda also following the train made by the Pro Tour leaders and soon to be champions

Bazajev put Grillo in a perfect position, but the Italian avoided to make his move until the very last moment, which was a real mistake with Avelino and Boonen right in his wheel

Boonen made his move under the 1 kilometer banner, bringing Castaneda with him to the front positions as well, with Grillo still failing to launch from Bazajev's wheel

Castaneda was in a great position with one kilometer to go, right in Boonen's wheel, but in the final kilometer no one was able to hang on to Boonen, the Belgian powering away from the rest of the pack

And Boonen took quite a dominating win, the second one in this year's ToNE, which moves him up to 4th in the GC, overtaking Ballan. Also the Belgian seems to have no challenger in the race for the green jersey

Castaneda finished second, with Grillo taking the last spot on the podium in the end, but after that lead - out it could have been better for the Italian
