We are straight into a 20km time trial, and the wind will be a factor today here on the British south coast.

Michael Ford starts early, with the wind still just under 10, and sets a benchmark

But the wind picks up, to the low 20s and then up to 30. Grivko and Spilak beat Ford at the early check, but have lost over 30 seconds by the finish

David Millar rode with the wind at its peak (around 33), he was one of many to beat Ford at the check, but at the finish? 18 seconds behind

Vincenzo Nibali set the best time at the check, but riding not far behind Millar, the wind is high and he fades badly to 25 seconds slower, in 3rd

As Lars Boom starts, the wind is still at 30, but its dropped to 24 by the finish and it shows. He is still 15 seconds behind Ford, but is at least 2nd

By the time Posthuma finishes, the wind has now dipped to 18. 2nd he goes, 8 seconds behind - Ford lost time on Stage 1, so that makes Posthuma the virtual race leader

The lower wind is certainly helping, as Marcel Barth puts in a top ride to go 5th

Elijzen goes a little faster than Barth soon after, while Devolder also capitalises on the wind to finish 3rd, 13 seconds behind Ford

The last strong time trialist is Pluchkin, and he is 4th at the first check (behind Nibali, Boom and Millar)

But even as early as the check, the wind has changed again - back over 20, up to 25 - and the best Pluchkin can battle to is 5th, level on time with Boom

Boonen loses 47 seconds to conclude the stage - and the remarkable winner is Michael Ford! Perhaps the 6 minutes lost on Stage 1 was tactical, but this is a huge stage for La Gazetta, with Posthuma 2nd and into the race lead. In a race where Wikipedia desperately needed to outscore La Gazzetta to keep the ProTour team battle alive, this could be a critical moment.
