Second day in East Java and it's maybe the toughest stage: 183km and several short climbs, plus the 36 degrees.. it could be easier.
It's still a flat rated stage and so it's definitely the sprinters, who will hope for line honours again: race-leader Guarnieri looked dominating, will the likes of Napolitano, Roelandts or surprising 2nd Feillu be able to beat him?
4 riders went clear right from start and it looks like they are allowed to go:
Vandousselaere
Hopman
Seledkov
Passeron
lead by 1'20" with still 172km remaining..
Pranata and Breen try to jump behind this breakaway twenty kilometres later..
the crowd's going crazy with local hero Pranata attacking here! And of course it ain't only this fans, who hope for a succesful break today!
The first two intermediate sprints are rather early in the stage and therefore something for this escapees..
#1 #2 #3 Passeron4 4 - 8 Vandousselaere2 6 - 8 Seledkov6 - - 6 Hopman- 2 - 2
So Passeron and Vandousselaere with the most bonus seconds so far in the race.. even though one might have expected Hopman to do better here.
The peloton is on the chase and it's going to be yet another tough challenge for the breakaway! The gap is melting with every km..
At least the escapees manage to hold off the bunch til today's last intermediate sprint, 7km before finish! Valuable bonus seconds - and so a missed chance for the GC-contenders..
#1 #2 #3 Passeron4 4 - 8 Vandousselaere2 6 4 12 Seledkov6 - 6 12 Hopman- 2 2 4
The breakaway is soon to be caught though..
Like yesterday, there's a short climb close to the finish, but again there's no serious attempt to attack the bunch..
..and this time it looks like some teams managed to build a train: Evian, Hollister and also Bouygues in particular.
And that's something, Evian's manager wanted to see: the team provides a nice leadout for Napo, with all other sprinters staying behind:
Sonnery
Napolitano
Guarnieri
Van Hummel
Dempster
Davis
Gatto
also Roelandts, Nateghi and Docker ain't too far behind..
A few moments later, we got a whole new situation, with the three last mentioned riders moving forward with incredible speed:
Docker kicked impressively, together with
Nateghi and
Roelandts..
Napolitano left Sonnery's slipstream as well..
Guarnieri couldn't follow yet, but he's within reach, just like
Van Hummel
Vaitkus!
Only a few metres to go.. it looks like a battle between
Docker
Roelandts
Napolitano
with the first still holding on to a small gap!
Nateghi suffers a bit, losing ground on
Van Hummel and
Vaitkus!
Mitch Docker takes it! He certainly was the strongest today, a great win for the Aussie!
Roelandts 2nd ahead of Napolitano, who hadn't the right timing.
A nice 4th for Vaitkus and therefore a pretty good stage for airBaltic. Van Hummel 5th ahead of Davis, Van Poppel and Nateghi.
Race-leader Guarnieri 10th today, but he will wear the yellow on final day.. Bellis (17th) was never in good position today, he definitely will hope for a tougher final stage.
In other bad news for the team, escapee Passeron couldn't stay with the peloton on this final climb, so the bonus seconds won't be of any use. Same goes for Vandousselaere and all other escapees except of Seledkov, who's one today's biggest winners by jumping on GC's 5th!
