Finally it's time to kick off this short stage race in Indonesia! 37 degrees and a few short but steep climbs could make for an interesting day!
Anyway, the sprinters are expected to take this, so Napolitano, Davis, Roelandts, Cavendish/Docker or - for a tougher race - Bellis will be top-seeds today.
It took a few tries, but with 134km remaining, it seems that we have our break of the day:
Kunitski
Taborre
Van Ooijen
are allowed to go clear, establishing a minute gap quickly.
Two intermediate sprints today and both will be taken by this escapees, who build up to 8 minutes on the bunch..
#1 #2 Van Ooijen6 4 10 Taborre4 6 10 Kunitski2 2 4
Kunitski, better known as a solid puncheur - well, same goes for Taborre - had no chance here. Those bonus seconds can always be valuable in a flat stage race.
On the seconds screen, you may (!) notice that he peloton ain't too far behind with now 29km to go: 2'10" for the escapees, now facing a hard chasing bunch.
And with 8km remaining, they got reeled in. So no surprising breakaway success today.
Also this last climb won't split up the pack, neither would any rider try to attack the peloton late in the race, even though Bellis is found at the very top of the bunch here. Evian and Vespa look in control so far.
Now also airBaltic joins the front of the peloton, but it seems this climb actually had some influence on the race:
there's no real train and the sprinters look quite exhausted, with the speed being quite low with the race already entering the final 1.5km!
So the "real" sprint kicked off under the kite, here we go with the bunch sprint!
Pagoto
Guarnieri
Vaitkus
Cavendish
Davis
Garbelli
Napolitano
Feillu
Roelandts
seem to be in the mix by now.. the two Vespa-domestiques already lose speed though. Napolitano is boxed behind a suffering Cav, same goes for Bellis, who couldn't take advantage of his good position.
Guarnieri has a nice gap with the finish line approaching! Davis looked quite fast, but now loses some ground!
Moving forward from behind:
Vaitkus
Napolitano
Feillu
Roelandts
Baumann
Bellis
All other riders behind are obviously blocked by this "wall" of Guarnieri-chasers!
No chance for them to catch up to the Italian! Guarnieri takes out the first stage in style, kicking off the sprint as first and maintaining his lead quite easily. Well done.
Behind it's a very very close photo finish and we had to double-check the result here: if you take a very close look at it, you will notice, who crosses the line as 2nd..
..it's Feillu! A great result. Davis complete today's podium.
Napolitano might have expected more, but he got blocked by Cav, which definitely hurt his chances. Vaitkus best airBaltic as 5th, ahead of a rather disappointing Roelandts.
