The opening stage in the Tour of California could be an unpredictable one with the last ascent of Brookway Summit very close to the finish. There is an opportunity you would think for a decent punchaer to nip away, the question is who will control the days inevitable break.
With an early King of the mountains prime up for grabs riders go up the road eager for good start to their teams journey to the West Coast of the US of A.
Tom Leezer
gets the glory over the top of the first climb.
Following him here is
Leonardo Duque
and
Juan-Antonio Flecha
to get the second and third places on this 6-4-2 climb as all four categorised offer on today's stage.
The three are joined by six more riders for a break of the day. The names including some decent punchy types:
Italian young 'un Chiaffredo Grippo
'Le Nose' Pierrick Fédrigo
British criterium king Russell Downing
Giro reject Salvatore Mancuso
French tough man Clément Lhotellerie
and Kazach all rounder Dmitri Muravjev
along with the three already named we have a nice mixture of veterens and roulers.
Downing shows his years honed on the tight British road circuit are not wasted by winning one of the two sprints, Colombian fast man Duque taking the other. In the second and third king of the Mountains climbs Fedrigo sniffs a chance of the leaders jersey accumulating 10 points with Leezer and Mancuso next best on 6 points.
The question of who is going to chase in the pack is left to wait until the last possible minute when with the leader timed at nearly 11 minutes, Wikipedia start to organise chase. After they start to bring things back UBS and Spyker join in the exercise of pulling this pretty decent nine man group back.
Lhotelliere found himself dropped on the third king of the mountains and with 25km to go the lead 8 now have a minute on him with three minutes on the pack. Have the pack left this chase too late?
The infighting amongst the lead eight starts before the Brockway summit climbing begins as Fedrigo, Flecha and Grippo move away with some purpose.
The climbing begins and with 10km to go we have this:
lead three - - - - > five remaining break @ 36 seconds
- - - - - - - - - - - - > Pack at 2.44
It looks like our winner is going to be from the break here and indeed our first leader here in California, it does depend how hard this climb proves to be.
The 25 year old Grippo is in the company of two absolute experts in this sort of stage, decides that offense is the best move here and attacks as the gradient rises up to the summit.
Back down the hill, as the pack climb it is world champion
Tejay Van Garderen
that increases the pace with 3km of the climb left.
Up front Grippo falters slightly, he has broken Flecha but Fedrigo comes up to his wheel and burns away up the climb.
Back in the pack some of the best punchaers in the world are in action as
Stefan Schumacher
and
Patrik Sinkewitz
neutralise TvG.
No big names seem to be missing from head of the pack, but we are really stretched over the top of the climb. Fedrigo leads over it having a profitable day gather 16 points, Grippo takes four more to add to two he picked up earlier and Mancuso gets his tally up to 8.
As the mad descent begins with Fedrigo and Grippo ahead the pack overhaul the rest of the breakaway and it is the attacking
Justo Tenorio
who tries to surprise everyone with a bold solo move.
3km to go and Fedrigo seems to have this holding out a 20 second advantage on Grippo and a minute in hand on the 47 man pack.
The pack is stretched so that it splits 27 to 18 and a few behind that... names missing the split are:
Beñat Intxausti
Martijn Keizer
Jerome Coppel
and
Walter Pedraza
Up front Fedrigo holds his advantage over by 16 seconds over Grippo to win the opening stage and takes the early lead in the race.
Behind Tenerio's solo downhill comes to nought but he does at least get the 8 second bonus just under a minute behind Fedrigo. Wikipedia follow the Santander rider in, Phinney keeping himself well and truly near the front of things.
Behind the Intxausti/Keizer group drop a further 56 seconds on the favourites ahead, it's careless time lost on the opening day of the race.
