Another stage for sprinters in California. Roelandts was the strongest sprinter so far, winning 2 stages and he will definitely be looking for the third one and maybe a last chance to take the green jersey. The other sprinters shouldn't be underestimated though, especially Vetonso, who already won a stage or Granjel Cabrera, who was the Sony power on his side. A winning breakaway shouldn't be a big surprise either


After a lot of attacks at the beginning of the stage, only three riders made it in the day's breakaway: Vandewalle, Portal and Lund

Portal won the first intermediate sprint of the day and shortly after that he left the other 2 behind to take the only summit on today's route

Behind the escapes, Lopez Garcia took the fourth place which made him the new best climber of the race, which means that finally Rodriguez Segarra will have to let the polka dot jersey go

On the downhill that followed the climb, Summerhill attacked from the pack, Soon he caught and left behind Vandewalle and Lund

He didn't have any problems catching Portal either, joining the Nespresso rider in the lead right before the last intermediate sprint, which was won by the American

30 kilometers before the finish, Summerhill left Portal behind and took the race on his own. He entered the last 10 kilometers with an advantage of one minute in front of the pack

That wasn't enough for the Cafe de Colombia rider though, who was caught right before the 5 kilometers banner. Another great chance to take a stage win missed by Summerhill here in California, after the defeat suffered in the fourth stage

Del Nero made a great job for Ventoso and 3 kilometers before the finish except Vanderbiest no one was able to keep it up with the Santander train

When the actual sprint started the 3 riders got away from the rest of the pack and before the final kilometer of the stage it was clear that it will be between Ventoso and Vanderbiest for today's victory

Vanderbiest had the better position when entering the final kilometer, but Ventoso looked able to hold on to his lead

The Pearl rider did everything he could but he just had no chance stopping Ventoso, who took his 2nd stage win and Santander's third stage win here, even though they are only riding as wildcards. Phinney took a surprising third place and added some other 8 bonus seconds to his time
