Another day for sprinters in California, but with 4 climbs on the route we might see a new polka dot jersey wearer even though Rodriguez Segarra looked really strong in the previous stages

The breakaway was made quite early and nine riders went away from the pack: Steurs, Merino Criado, Vandewalle, Arango, Dyadichkin, Klostergaard, Koldo Fernandez, Mirono and Korzh

Dyadichkin was the only one of the escapes to have scored KoM points in the previous stage and he was also first at the top of the first climb today

The Kazakh rider looked settled to take the polka dot jersey from Rodriguez Segarra, but on the downhill that followed the first climb the escapes split into many different groups.
And the Starbucks rider was left in one of the behind groups, leaving him no chance for the KoM jersey

Steurs and Merino Criado continued the race in the front group. Steurs took the second climb of the day, while Merino Criado took the last 2.

But neither of them was able to post a threat for Rodriguez Segarra who keeps his jersey for at least 3 other days, with no climbs on tomorrow's stage or in the time - trial

At the top of the last climb, Lovkvist, Del Nero and Gautier attacked from the pack. They got away for a few kilometers on the downhill, but as soon as the flat section arrived they were brought back in the pack

After a winning breakaway yesterday, the escapes had no chance today, Steurs being the last one to be caught - 22 kilometers before the finish

10 kilometers before the finish, Energie - Diesel made their move for Corioni and Duque took the lead of the pack

The Energie - Diesel train was soon followed by the 3 big guns - Bewley, Roelandts and Granjel Cabrera

But 10 kilometers spent in front of the pack proved way too tough for Duque and with 3.5 kilometers before the finish the Energie train collapsed, bringing the 3 big favorites down with them as well

When the actual sprint started there were no real sprinters in the front of the pack, Kruijswijk, Anza and Zabriskie being in the first three positions

Before the final kilometer banner, Ventoso appeared from nowhere and took the lead

With all the big sprinters caught in the Energie - Diesel trap, he had no problems powering away from the other riders in the final kilometer

And Ventoso brings the second stage win in a row for Santander! What a race for the Spanish wildcards. He was surprising followed on the podium by Hagen and Phinney
