Tour of California - Stage 3

Today's stage is set to be one of the most decisive ones in this year's Tour of California. Even though there are only 2 climbs on today's route and the top of the last one is more than 20 kilometers away from the finish line, we should see some time gaps and maybe even a new yellow jersey wearer

On paper, Van Garderen and Hagen are the main favorites for the stage win, but the few riders that could keep it up with Zabriskie in the time - trial definitely want the bonus seconds as well

Three riders went away in the day's main breakaway: Perez Fernandez, Le Mevel and Fernandez Oliveira

Le Mevel took the first intermediate sprint of the day, with Perez Fernandez taking the second one. The Spaniard was also first at the top of the first climb of the day but it wasn't enough to take the KoM jersey from Rodriguez Segarra, who will be in the polka dots for at least another day

The escapes started the last climb of the day with a decent advantage but all their hopes were killed by Plaza's attack, 6 kilometers before the summit

The Spaniard soon caught the three escapes and took over the lead, but the pack wasn't far behind him and more riders were trying to get away

Still, the Spaniard hanged on to all the attacks that were made behind him and he was first at the top of the climb

30 seconds behind him, we had a chasing group with Phinney, Kashechkin, Lovkvist and Samuel Sanchez

One minute behind the Spaniard, a second chasing group crossed the summit, closely followed by the pack. Amador, Kolesnikov, Zabriskie, Luis Leon Sanchez and Juan Jose Cobo

On the downhill, Sanchez and Phinney proved way stronger than Kash and Lovkvist and they left those two behind and started chasing Plaza

Right before the 10 km banner they managed to catch Plaza, who wasn't as faster as those two on the downhill, even though he looked really strong on the climb

40 seconds behind them, the chasers arrived. Kashechkin and Lovkvist were caught by Luis Leon Sanchez, Zabriskie, Cobo, Kolesnikov and Amador, with Hagen also joining the group

With only 5 kilometers left from today's stage, Plaza, Sanchez and Phinney still had a lead of 30 seconds in front of their main chasers, but the group behind was looking really strong now

Phinney didn't work at all in the final kilometers and with neither Plaza or Sanchez doing a great job, they lost almost all their advantage before the final kilometer was even reached

And the chasing group caught them right before the 1 km banner, with Hagen, Kolesnikov and Zabriskie in the first positions

After resting in the final kilometers, Phinney powered away from the others when the group reached the final kilometer

Inside the last kilometer, Plaza and Sanchez lost their places on the podium, which seemed secured with 5 km before the finish, to Hagen and Kolesnikov, while Phinney was heading towards the stage win

And the American did it, becoming the third different stage winner, as well as the third wearer of the yellow and green jersey after Zabriskie and Roelandts

The Tour of California king in the past few years, Zabriskie didn't get back the yellow jersey today but he didn't lose any time on the road and he even looked really happy for his team - mate's success
