Tour of California - Stage 2

The second stage in California is mostly flat and we should see a mass sprint at the end of it, even though there are 3 climbs on today's route. Bewley and Roelandts are rated as the main favorites, but there are some other strong sprinters riding here as well


After a disappointing ride in the prologue, Gretsch attacked in the early kilometers of the stage and he took the first intermediate sprint of the day

After that, twelve riders managed to make it in the day's breakaway, Festina being the only team with 2 riders between the escapes

The 12 escapes were: Dyadichkin, Faiers, Fouquet, Giling, Klostergaard, Lay, Coletta, Rodriguez Segarra, Arango, Champion, Li and Gretsch

At the top of the first climb, only Rodriguez Segarra seemed interested in the KoM points and he had no problems taking the first 6 of them

On the downhill, Schroder and Galimzyanov attacked from the pack and it was only a matter of time before they joined the leading group, Vesuvio becoming the 2nd team with 2 riders in the breakaway

La Gazzetta's Spaniard had a full day being first at the top of the second and third climb as well, becoming the first wearer of the KoM jersey in this year's Tour of California
The second intermediate sprint of the day was taken by Galimzyanov

On the last climb of the day the pack won back a lot of the breakaway's advantage and soon after the summit most of the escapes were caught

Only four of them managed to stay in front for a little longer but they barely managed to reach the last 25 kilometers of the stage

The last 4 survivors were Dyadichkin and Giling from the original breakaway group, plus the 2 new comers, Schroder and Galimzyanov

After the last escapes were caught, the stage head to the expected mass sprint. Five kilometers before the finish, 2 main sprint trains were made; one for Granjel Cabrera, led by Reihs, and one for Roelandts, led by Caethoven

But Caethoven wasn't strong enough to stay in front of the pack for too long and Roelandts ended up following the Sony Ericsson train, bringing Bewley with him as well

Two kilometers before the finish line, Reihs was leading the sprint, with the 3 main sprinters riding right behind him, all preparing their final moves for today's stage

Granjel Cabrera entered the final kilometer of the stage in the lead, but Roelandts was right behind him, with Bewley not far away either

300 meters before the finish, Roelandts made his move and killed Granjel Cabrera's hopes for the stage win

And the Belgian wins the stage and continues a great series of wins for Carmeuse after Cancellara's performances in Romandie. Granjel Cabrera and Bewley followed him on the podium

Zabriskie got an amazing 8th place today, but it wasn't enough to keep the yellow jersey, which was taken by Roelandts, thanks to the bonus seconds. Great day for the Carmeuse rider, who won the stage and became the new wearer of the yellow and green jerseys as well
