The queen stage of the Tour of Britain takes us through Wales to the tricky Caerphilly Mountain double ascent. Can Haussler be dropped? Can Cavendish be dropped?
We get six riders in our break of the day and it is an interesting mix of slippery Van Kiersbulck GC candidates and a couple of KoM raiders.
Maesen (Bpost), Smirnovs (AirBaltic) and Sulimov (Tinkoff) are all still in the group of 40 riders who have yet to lose anything but bonus time thus far in the race. They are here with
two riders who have lost time but gained KoM points in Cleaver (Jaguar) and Teunissen (UPC).
The whole breakaway are no doubt boosted by internet favourite Danny Pate (Halfords).
The Bonus sprints just may have an impact so here are the results of those:
Spr 1: Smirnovs - Sulimov - Maesen
Spr 2: Smirnovs - Sulimov - Maesen
Spr 3: Smirnovs - Sulimov - Maesen
As you can see AirBaltic are not entirely backing Cavendish with Smirnovs a cheeky break bonus up GC kind of guy.
The two pre Caerphilly KoM primes positions were:
KoM 1: Cleaver - Maesen - Sulimov
KoM 2: Maesen - Pate - Sulimov (with Cleaver and Teunissen getting minor points)
The six riders still have over two minutes going into the first of our Caerphilly ascents.
Pate and Maesen kick on, Pate seemingly having saved his best for today and Maesen is doing well to follow.
All is not completely calm in the pack which is as ever being controlled by SRAM. Schreurs attacks near the top of our first Caerphilly romp.
The leaders race down the descent, Caerphilly really isn't that longer climb but it is hard.
You wonder how much the break have. Maesen has now left Pate whose internet reputation seems overegged as he now looks tired back with the other four breaks.
Maesen has 90 seconds on the pack who have reeled in Schreurs and is now led by Prio Porto (for Ventoso) and Swedbank (For Kreder).
Scratch what I just said about Pate - as Maesen begins to sink and falls back to his fellow breakaways look who is off on the last climb of the day.
With SRAM's leader Haussler beginning to look leggy they look to play their other card in Fabian Wegmann. The German is usually a good judge of when to strike and he thinks this is the time.
The real picture begind to get confusing as some riders are being lapped. But we can see a rocketing Vueling jersey as Schreuers having tested the water on the last climb chases and overhauls Wegmann on his way to the back of the break.
Schreuers gets past the break and nabs the KoM point just ahead of Cleaver who looks the strongest of the breakaways.
The break though have been strong and a real chance for Smirnovs and Sulimov to move up GC if they can cling on here.
Froome (Jaguar) and Wegmann have nipped up to the breakaway with Tueniseen and the misjudging Maesen having gone back to the pack.
So we have a lead group of seven on the final descent (Schreuers, Wegmann, Froome, Cleaver, Pate, Smirnovs and Sulimov) whpo have 30 seconds on the pack.
A quick check on the pack and we see no sign of Cavensish, Priamo (UPC), Van Keirsbulck (Bpost), Hushovd (Swedbank) or Caldiera (Prio).
The descent is fast with four riders looking the strongest. Our three late arrivers Froome, Wegmann and Schreuers along with the plucky Cleaver.
We can see that they are being chased by Ventoso, Haussler, Kreder and yes a lesser spotted Bellis (along with the rest of the pack and former breakaways Smirnovs and Sulimov.
They are not going to get the stage win but may cut down the gap a little as Wegmann and Schreurs battle toward the finish with the Jaguar pair out of it.
Wegmann takes it!
What a race for SRAM, it's heads they win and tails everyone else loses. The pack are right on their tail.
Incredably again the gaps are reduced to nothing, 29 riders are given the same time. Schreurs and Froome finish on the podium with Cleaver seperating them and the pack which is led home by Ventoso.
Cavendish slips back having been dropped, along with lower GC riders like Van Keirsbulck, Priamo and Caldiera. They are replaced by the likes of Wegmann up to 4th, Smirnovs up to 5th and Sulimov up to 6th.
