The last stage of the Tour of Britain is a short, flat criterium in the city of London. The GC is almost decided by now, as it seems unlikely that Jonathan Bellis can make a top three today. Likewise, only a disaster would make Danilo Napolitano lose the green jersey, while the KoM is decided, the winner will be Olivier Le Gac.
The first move is started by Fabrice Jeandesboz, and the Frenchman is joined by Taiji Nishitani and Evan Oliphant. Behind them, there’s an 8 men chase group with Gatis Smukulis, Tom Thill, Jonathon Thire, Luke Durbridge, King Lok Cheung, Marco Marcato, Marco Corti, and Joeri Stallaert.
When both groups were about to merge, Thire falls. Bad luck for the Puma sprinter, who would be the fastest in the breakaway.
Finally the chase group links up with 78km to go. We have, then, 10 men up the road, because Thire has been caught after his crash, and they have a 1’51’’ lead.
And Thire is trying again! Hats off to the French sprinter, who isn’t giving up in spite of his crash.
There’s a fall in the peloton now, Junpei Murakami couldn’t stay upright, in the very same turn where Thire fell before. The rain is making this dangerous, and obviously that turn is, for some reason, specially slippery.
After an impressive effort, Thire bridges the gap and joins the breakaway. Chapeau to him, really. Many would have preferred an easier ride in the peloton after a crash. The now 11 attackers have 4’06’’ with 56km to go, surely it won’t be long until the sprinters team start to work in the peloton.
And there they are. Rothaus and Proximus Trek want one last chance for Maxime Vantomme and Mark Cavendish, so they don’t go home without any stage win. UniCredit is working as well, looking for a second stage win for Danilo Napolitano.
With 25km to, the gap is down to 1’36’’, so it looks clear that this stage will be , just as expected, for the sprinters.
18km to go and the gap goes under 1 minute. Then, Smukulis decides it’s too early to get caught, and launches a strong attack. Only Cheung responds, while Jeandesboz tries to organize the rest chase them down.
However Jeandesboz fails at organizing the chase, so all but Smukulis and Cheung are caught with 15km to go. Smukulis now has 16’’ on Cheung and 1’11’’ on the peloton.
10km to go for Smukulis, and his gap on Cheung hovers at 16’’, while he has just 57’’ on the peloton now.
With 7km to go, Cheung gives up and is caught. Smukulis’ lead has been reduced to 24’’ and the peloton has him in sight, so the mass sprint looks a done deal now.
Crash in the peloton now! Peter Kennaugh lost balance, and with him Grégory Rast, Pieter Ghyllebert, Tiziano Dall’Antonia, Aleksandar Flügel, Ahmad Haidar Anuawar, Jéremy Roy, Will Frischkorn, Tony Martin and Evan Oliphant have hit the tarmac. Looks like only Dall’Antonia will have to abandon the race.
The crash has caused a split as well, and among those affected are, besides those who fell, Francesco Reda, Julien Vermote, Rory Sutherland, Sylvain Calzati, Ben Hermans and Samuel Sánchez.
In the front of the peloton, UniCredit is setting their sprint train again with
Davide Bragazzi
Boy Van Poppel
Mirko Lorenzetto
Danilo Napolitano
Following Napolitano is the race leader, Daryl Impey, while behind the South African Maciej Ulanowski is trying to leave Mark Cavendish in a good position for the sprint.
Smukulis is finally caught with 3500m to go. We can see Impey, Corioni, Cavendish and Mohs following UniCredit’s train, but bad positioning means the likes of Vantomme, Docker, Crocket or Vingerling have no chance today.
Another crash! In the same turn that saw Thire and Murakami fall, Lorenzetto falls and takes Impey and Smukulis with him! After them, many riders can’t avoid the fall:
Cherif Abdallah
Lars Crocket
King Lok Cheung, Michael Vink
Noam Cohen, Yannick Stoltz
Amaël Moinard, Chris Sutton, Joseph Cooper, Matteo Priamo
Frederik Nolf
Jack Bauer
Óscar Freire
All fall as well. Drama for the Jayco - Red Bull team, that could have their race ruined in the very last kilometers of the last stage.
The chaos has caused that Napolitano is alone in the front, with some seconds over Corioni, Cavendish, Mohs and a fading Van Poppel.
Napolitano is the most benefitted with the crash, with 500m to go his advantage pretty much guarantees him the win.
And he takes it! 2nd victory for Napolitano in the Tour of Britain, and the Italian wins the points jersey as well.
The mass crash has turned into a massacre. When the group splitted in the previous crash arrived to the infamous turn, another enormous group of riders crashed, including
Vesely, Ariesen, Hermans, Krieger, Landa
Dekkers, Stroetinga, Vermeltfoort, Ligthart, Veelers, Westra
Thwaites, Opie, Holohan, Perry, Oliphant
Larsson, Brammeier, Lavery, Persson, Gudsell
Van Impe, Atkins, Raabe, Engoulvent
Roulston, Anacona, Mollema, Tankink, Diniz
D’Amore, Sterbini, Zanotti, Longo Borghini, Pirazzi, Fonzi
Grmay, Sulzberger, Dowsett, Appleby, Rowsell
Haidar Anuawar, Besada
Kelderman, Bouhanni, Egger, Martin
Zirbel, Pasamontes, Reijnen, Sánchez, Ghyllebert
Viganò, Di Maggio, Corti, Haavardsholm
Gaudin, Roy, Meyer, Thill, Andersen, Debusschere
Loddo, Predatsch, Flügel, Preidler, Zabel
Hayakawa, Lloyd
Mori, Calzati
Rast, Keisse, Saramotins
Polanc, Van den Eynde, La Lavandier, Stenuit
Cavendish easily takes 2nd ahead of Mohs, while Corioni is 4th and Van Poppel 5th. It will be interesting to see how GC ends after today, Napolitano could very well jump to the podium, who would have thought that before the race!
The group including Bellis and Ista arrives some seconds back, probably not enough to open a gap, led by Hushovd. All the crashes could put the young Brit in the GC lead.
The group of Impey, Reda, Sutherland and Vermote comes in a minute behind. That ends the hopes of a GC win for the Red Bull sprinter.
Because of the crash, several riders climb off their bikes, and won’t end the race. Those are
Zanotti
Van Impe
Kelderman, Martin
Polanc
Flügel
Tough luck for Martin and Flügel, not just they lose their good GC places, but they won’t even be able to finish this crash-marred stage.
The biggest group with most of the riders from the last crash, including 10th in GC Pieter Ghyllebert finishes 5’ down.
So, finally, Jonathan Bellis takes the GC for the second year in a row, although probably the way he won it isn’t the most pleasant, winning your home race is always a special moment. Kevin Ista is second, thanks to the breakaway in the 5th stage, undoubtedly a great result from the Belgian, as probably his team didn’t expect to get that much from this race. Danilo Napolitano completes the podium. Surprising to see a pure sprinter in the podium probably, but several race circumstances played in his favour.
UniCredit is possibly the big winner of the race. Two stage wins with Napolitano, plus 3rd, 6th, 7th and 9th in GC thanks to the crashes in the last stage. As for the secondary classifications, Olivier Le Gac wins the KoM, Napolitano the points jersey, and Bellis, obviously, the young riders classification, while Team WWE is the best team, after taking the lead from Jayco – Red Bull in the 5th stage. Congratulations to all of them!
