Everyone’s ready now for the last hilly stage of this Tour of Britain. This is the last chance to gain time on the race leader, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Aleksandar Flügel, besides time bonuses, so the other pre-race favourites

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Cesare Di Maggio
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Samuel Sánchez
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Fabian Wegmann
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Sylvain Calzati

Will need to be aggressive.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0002.jpg

The first climb is done very fast by the peloton, and that causes that no attacks have sticked yet. The last three attackers are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Tony Martin, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Michael Vink and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Pieter Ghyllebert, and they pass through the KoM sprint in that order. Behind, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Olivier Le Gac attacks for the KoM points, getting the 4th place, so he’s now the virtual KoM leader.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0003.jpg

Later on, Vink is caught by the peloton, as he soft pedals for no apparent reason. However, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Francesco Reda joins Ghyllebert and Martin upfront, while there are more riders trying to join, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Julien Vermote and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Rory Sutherland are 47” back, and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Thomas Vaitkus and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Kevin Ista are 1’20’’ behind the front group, which have 4’01’’ on the peloton.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0004.jpg

Second KoM sprint, and this time the order is Ghyllebert, Martin, Reda. Le Gac won’t take points here, but he’s pretty much secured to have the KoM jersey after today’s stage.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0005.jpg

Finally, all 7 attackers get together, and they have now 6’17’’ on the peloton.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0006.jpg

The peloton don’t seem to be bothered by the breakaway, and the gap goes up to 10’ with 120km to go. No team seems willing to push the pace, could the breakaway make it to the finish?

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0007.jpg

Only Martin and Ghyllebert fight for the KoM sprint, getting 1st and 2nd, respectively, while Ista is third. The gap has grown even bigger, and it’s at 10’35’’ now.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0008.jpg

No fight for the intermediate sprint, where Ghyllebert is 1st, Ista 2nd and Martin 3rd. We’re now with 110km to go, and the gap keeps growing, the advantage is 11’46’’, and it looks like the winner might come from the breakaway.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0009.jpg

100km to go, and the gap is up to 13’27’’. It looks clear now that the winner today will be one of the 7 riders in the breakaway, remember

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Tony Martin
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Pieter Ghyllebert
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Francesco Reda
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Julien Vermote
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Rory Sutherland
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Thomas Vaitkus
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Kevin Ista

Vaitkus is, by far, the fastest, but that could mean he’ll need to control all the eventual attacks by himself. Anyhow, it’s looking good for the Lithuanian at the moment.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0010.jpg

Now i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Matteo Priamo falls in the peloton! Fortunately, no one else has fallen with him, and the Italian can go on.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0011.jpg

Last KoM sprint of the day, and Ghyllebert just edges Ista for it, with Martin in 3rd. Le Gac will be the new KoM leader, but now Ghyllbert has options to fight for it tomorrow. The gap is now down to 12’08’’ thanks to i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Rapha Condor’s work, but it’s been already clear for a while that there’s no way they will be caught, and the work is more oriented to avoid the breakaway to upset the GC.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0012.jpg

15km to go, and the gap is now down to 8’46’’, so the GC is controlled now. The attacks should start in any moment in the breakaway, unless they want to be smashed by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Vaitkus. They are about to hit the last small hill, so that could be a good place for an attack.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0013.jpg

And there we go! Just before the climb, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Martin attacks! Nobody seems to be willing to go with the German.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0014.jpg

When Martin reaches the top of the climb, he has 34’’ on the other 6 riders. This could be enough.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0015.jpg

As Martin goes under the 5km banner, the gap is down to 21’’. There’s some collaboration behind, but it remains to be seen whether Ghyllebert, Reda, Ista, Vermote and Sutherland will be willing to work with Vaitkus for much more time.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0016.jpg

Meanwhile, the peloton has surprisingly slowed down, and the gap to Martin is up to 9’03’’. This means Martin is in virtual yellow, with three pan flats stages to come. Clearly i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Rapha Condor didn’t want to keep doing i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png VolksWagen – Siemens' work.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0017.jpg

In the chase group, with 3km to go, Ghyllebert has made a massive pull, decreasing the gap to Martin to only 15’’, and effectively setting a leadout for Vaitkus. People in i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Cyclevox’s car should be happy.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0018.jpg

Reda and Ista are the first to launch the sprint, and they blast past Martin just under the flamme rouge. Behind, Vaitkus is launching his sprint now as well.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0019.jpg

500m to go, and Reda is still ahead, while Ista isn’t quite able to go past him, and Vaitkus is steadily gaining ground.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0020.jpg

And Reda takes it for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Team Venchi! Di Maggio hasn’t had a good race, but now Reda makes up for it with a nice victory. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Vaitkus is second, he was clearly the fastest, but launched his sprint too late, and couldn’t gain back all the ground made by Reda. Disappointing for the Lithuanian, who was by much the fastest here, and didn't even had to reel in any attackers. 3rd place is taken by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Kevin Ista, who lacked the strength to go past Reda. But, even if he has crossed the finish line, the stage isn't over for the Belgian, if the gap to the peloton is big enough, he could get the race lead - surely a good consolation for not being able to take the stage!

Behind them, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Vermote is 4th, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Sutherland 5th, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Martin 6th and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Ghyllebert 7th. Martin did a good attempt, which was ruined by a strong Ghyllebert, who clearly spent too much in the chase.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0022.jpg

The peloton goes now under the 5km banner. The best rider in GC from those in the breakaway is Ista, who was 8’26’’ down, but took two time bonuses, 4’’ in the intermediate sprint and 8’’ in the finish, so i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Aleksandar Flügel can’t lose more than 8’14’’ if he wants to keep the lead. The measured gap with 5km to go is 8’56’’, so it will be very close, but VolksWagen is working hard.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0023.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Mirko Lorenzetto launches Danilo Napolitano, who will want a good position to further increase his lead in the points classification. This could be very good for VolksWagen, as it should speed up the peloton.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%205/PCM0024.jpg

And Napolitano easily gets 7th, he’s closed almost a minute by himself, ending 8’ behind Reda. But he went so hard he opened a gap! The peloton finishes 19’’ behind the Italian, and now Kevin Ista is the GC leader, thanks to the bonuses he got! Another Belgian, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Vermote, gets the Young Rider Classification lead, and with a good margin too, so he could have wrapped it up.

The next stages should be exciting, even if they are pan flat, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Ista has only 3’’ on i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Reda and 5’’ on i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Flügel, so the fight for time bonuses could decide the GC, which is incredibly close.
