Tour of Britain - Stage 4

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0001.jpg

We’re in for another hilly stage in Britain. After yesterdays’ disappointing climb of the Black Mountain, today’s stage might look easier, but beware of the steep hills in the last 5km which may cause havoc. The favourites are still the same, so keep your eyes on

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Cesare Di Maggio
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Jonathan Bellis
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Samuel Sánchez

Among others.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0002.jpg

The first KoM sprint comes soon, and after a very hard climb. It’s i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Olivier Le Gac who comes first there, with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Michael Vink and William Ford 2nd and 3rd, and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Haijun Ma 4th. Behind this trio, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Paolo Longo Borghini has attacked as well, it’s impressive to see the Italian on the attack for the 3rd stage in a row.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0003.jpg

Surprisingly though, Longo Borghini sits up and swallowed by the peloton, just like he did yesterday before his second attack. At least, he’s put himself in the virtual KoM lead. There’s a new wave of attackers though

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Liam Holohan
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Stéphane Poulhiès
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Frederik Nolf
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Stefano Pirazzi
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Daniel Vesely

Join Le Gac, Ford, Vink and Ma, and the 9 men breakaway has 3’24’’ on the peloton.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0004.jpg

Second KoM sprint, and it’s Nolf who crosses first this time, with Ma in second and Pirazzi in third. Le Gac is 4th meaning he is the virtual KoM leader now.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0005.jpg

Poulhiès clearly suffered on the climb, as he is dropped in a small bump during the descent. He is the worst climber in the breakaway, and is paying for it. The front 8 have now 6’52’’ on the peloton, with over 108km to go.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0006.jpg

With 90km to go, the gap is up to 7’20’’, so i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Rapha Condor – Qhubeka decide it’s time to work. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Team Venchi help with one man too.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0007.jpg

The breakaway gets to the last KoM sprint, where the order is Ma - putting himself in the KoM lead - Nolf, Le Gac, but in the following turn, the Belgian falls. His companions wait for him, so he comes back without any problem – and so does Poulhiès, who hasn’t given up in any moment.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0008.jpg

And now the peloton splits! Just when they arrived to the top of the last hard climb, the peloton stretched so much it was impossible to avoid the gap. Most notable riders missing the cut are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Joeri Stallaert and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Yannick Stoltz, who were 2nd and 3rd in GC thanks to yesterday’s breakaway.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0009.jpg

40km to go and the gap is down to 3’40’’, the peloton seem to have this controlled. Will the GC contenders battle for the stage this time?

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0010.jpg

25km to go, and Poulhiès finally surrenders, and is caught by the peloton. The whole stage has been a big pain for the French, who was being dropped in any bump. The other 8 riders of the breakaway still have 2’22’’, so it could be closer than expected for the peloton.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0011.jpg

The breakaway reach the intermediate sprint, but nobody goes for it, as they’re more focused on keeping their gap on the peloton. The crossing order is Vink, Ford, Pirazzi, and the gap is still 2’08’’ with 21.5km remaining.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0012.jpg

10km to go, and the gap is at 58’’ now. With the final hills this should be for the peloton, but if they don’t push hard it’ll be close.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0013.jpg

And they do push hard, specially i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Rapha Condor, they surely think Jonathan Bellis is a good bet for today’s stage, so the breakaway is caught with 5km to go. Race leader i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Rick Zabel is still in the bunch though, so they’ll need something else if they want the GC.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0014.jpg

2km to go, and we hit the final hill. While it’s i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png California Giant setting the pace, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Aleksandar Flügel powers away!

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0015.jpg

The peloton is almost at the top, and then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Sylvain Calzati reacts and tries to go with Flügel! The German has opened a nice gap, so Calzati won’t catch him easily!

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0016.jpg

The passivity in the peloton is very good for Calzati and, specially, Flügel. Only a short descent and the finish line will come, so the victory is out of reach for those who didn’t attack.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0017.jpg

Great victory for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Aleksandar Flügel! The German was the bravest, being the first to attack in the final climb, and that’s paid off, he’s got the stage, and a decent gap as well.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0018.jpg

Calzati is second, 35’’ behind. Good move for him as well, although he’ll probably regret to not to have tried before, seeing he was strong, and maybe could have followed Flügel’s move.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0019.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Coen Vertmeltfoort wins the bunch sprint for third to an impressive i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png William Ford, who has been the whole day in the breakaway. They come 53” after Flügel.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%204/PCM0020.jpg

Rick Zabel struggled in the last climb, and was finally gapped. He lost 2’06’’ and, consequently, the yellow jersey, but the good news for his team is that Flügel succeeds the young German in the lead. Calzati’s move makes him 2nd in GC as well, while his team mate Daryl Impey just held on, and is up to the third place. With only one hilly stage left, and not exactly the hardest, it’ll be difficult for his rivals to shake Flügel from the lead, but Impey is very fast, and can get bonus seconds.

The fight for the top 10 gets really tight as well, it will be interesting for sure with all riders from the 5th place (Wegmann) to the 21st place (Rast) in the same time.
