Tour of Britain - Stage 3

After 2 flat stages, the race hits the hills for the first time, in a stage which will feature the Black Mountain as the main obstacle, but it might be too far from the finish to be decisive, as it tops 32km away from the finish in Swansea.

It's also important to note that the finish line is atop of a short but quite steep hill, and some gaps could be opened there. Even if they're not too big, it could be important considering how close the GC should be in this race.

The main favourites for today are

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Cesare Di Maggio
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Jonathan Bellis
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Samuel Sánchez

But i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Aleksandar Flügel, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Fabian Wegmann, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Jérémy Roy, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Sylvain Calzati and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Giovanni Visconti shouldn’t be overlooked either.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0002.jpg

The stage begins at the very foot of the first climb, so it was expected to have the first attacks very soon. The first two riders to try are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Joeri Adams and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Rick Zabel, it looks like the young German wants to increase his lead in the KoM classification. The climb is short but very steep, mostly with ~10% slopes except in two flatter parts.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0003.jpg

Adams easily goes first through the KoM sprint, and Zabel settles for second.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0004.jpg

Behind them i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Paolo Longo Borghini and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Joeri Stallaert have attacked as well, and the Italian beats the Belgian for third in the KoM sprint. Did they attack for the KoM points, or will they try to bridge the gap and join Adams and Zabel?

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0005.jpg

Longo Borghini waits and is caught by the peloton, but Stallaert is still trying to join the breakaway. Just as the Italian is caught, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Yannick Stoltz and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Henry Raabe go clear.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0006.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Jonathon Thire falls now! Amazingly, nobody fell with him, despite his risky maneuver of climbing on his bike with the peloton blasting around him.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0007.jpg

In the front, Raabe, Stoltz and Stallaert join the breakaway, so we have five riders up the road now, with a 2’10’’ gap.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0008.jpg

The work of i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Team Venchi and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Unicredit means that the gap falls down to 1’30’’, and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Paolo Longo Borghini and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Alex Diniz attack now. Odd tactics by the Italian, who didn’t even try to bridge the gap with Stallaert before, and now goes on the attack.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0009.jpg

Both Diniz and Longo Borghini easily join the breakaway, which is going really slow now. They better up the pace, or they’ll be caught soon.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0010.jpg

Encouraged by the small gap, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Tom Veelers, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Philip Lavery, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Noam Cohen, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Amaël Moinard, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Chris Opie and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Luke Durbridge join the breakaway. The group is now up to 13 riders, and the gap is still small, 1’39’’.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0011.jpg

In the second KoM sprint, Raabe is first, with Longo Borghini second and Diniz third. Zabel didn’t even try, he seems confident that he has a big enough lead, and the black Mountain will give more points later in the stage. The gap is now up to 5’ with 70km to go.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0012.jpg

Another fall in the peloton! This time it’s i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Alexander Krieger, who falls in the first meters of the descent.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0013.jpg

The breakaway hits now the first slopes of the Black Mountain. It’s 5km long, almost constantly over 8%, and there’re 32km to go from the top. The gap is now down to 3’34’’.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0014.jpg

The steep slopes cause a split in the breakaway, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Moinard, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Diniz, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Longo Borghini, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Adams and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Lavery get a 45” gap on the rest of the breakaway.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0015.jpg

Moinard is the first under the KoM banner, followed by Diniz and Longo Borghini, while Adams and Lavery have lost contact, and are 28’’ behind. 1’48’’ behind are the rest of the breakaway, including KoM leader Rick Zabel, who will keep his jersey.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0016.jpg

Adamas and Lavery rapidly catch the front trio, who stopped after the KoM sprint. Meanwhile, in the peloton, the pace isn’t hard enough, as shown by the fact that over 130 riders get atop the Black Mountain together, including a confident i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Danilo Napolitano, who shows strength being always in the front 10 men in the peloton. The gaps with 28km to go are

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Adams<-1'21''->i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/koppert.png Veelers<-2'49''->Peloton
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Longo Borghinii1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/proximus.png Cohen, Stoltz
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Moinardi1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cyclevox-1.png Opie
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Dinizi1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/oz-1.png Durbridge
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Laveryi1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Raabe
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/BPost.png Stallaert
i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Zabel

It looks like the breakaway might have a chance this time.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0017.jpg

Then, the fast pace in the descent causes a gap in the peloton. Only 45 riders made it to the front group, with most of the top sprinters – with Danilo Napolitano and Daryl Impey as notable exceptions – among those dropped.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0018.jpg

20km to go for the peloton, and the gap is still 3’52’’. It’s clear now that the winner will come from the breakaway, it’s now in their hands to decide who'll take the win.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0019.jpg

And with 13km to go, Longo Borghini goes solo. Moinard is being forced to do most of the work, and the Italian might fear that Veelers’ group comes back, although they’re still over a minute behind.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0020.jpg

10km to go for Longo Borghini, who has a good 22’’ gap on the first chase group, 3’56’’ on the peloton, which still hasn’t woken up.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0022.jpg

Moinard chases the Italian down, and he’s caught with 7.5km to go. The gap is up to 2’05’’ on the chase group and 4’06’’ on the peloton. The stage winner is one of these guys, but will the winner take it with a late attack or will all be decided in the uphill sprint?

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0023.jpg

And Moinard immediately attacks! He’s shown to be the strongest in the breakaway, and now he tries with a solo move. Now his companions won’t be able to make the French pull again.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0024.jpg

5km to go, and he’s opened a 33’’ gap. It could be enough, as the chase looks unconvincing.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0025.jpg

Last meters for i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/redbull.png Moinard, who has this in the bag. The gap with the first chase group is up to 55’’.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0026.jpg

Great victory for the Frenchman, who ends the stage exhausted, not even being able to raise his arms to celebrate his brilliant victory. Behind him, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wwe.png Diniz gets the second place, while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.png Longo Borghini beats i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/saab.png Lavery for third. i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/focus.png Adams was the weakest in the uphill finish, and ends 5th.

i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o608/kumazan/Tour%20of%20Britain/Stage%203/PCM0027.jpg

The other 8 riders of the breakway came almost 3’ down, while i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/rapha.png Jonathan Bellis easily powers away from the peloton, he clearly felt strong in the finish. Will it be enough to get a gap?

It definitely is! He gets a valuable 13’’ gap on the rest of the favourites, in a stage with not much action among the contenders. He’s now the best of the contenders in GC, but still almost a minute down on the new leader, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Rick Zabel, who is having a very good race so far - he's leading 3 of the 4 individual classifications!
