We are in Rochdale for the first stage of this year's Tour of Britain. Britain receives us with a nice sunny day, perfect for a good day of cycling, in a stage where the fastest sprinters will fancy their chances, with
Erik Mohs
Danilo Napolitano
Peter Kennaugh
Mark Cavendish
Maxime Vantomme
Claudio Corioni
as the main favourites.
Quite soon into the race and the first riders try to go clear, we have Rick Zabel, Joeri Stallaert and Masaaki Kikuchi in the first group, with Matthew Brammeier and Graham Briggs coming a bit behind.
The first KoM sprint is after just 14km, and Kikuchi beats Zabel for the 1st place, with Stallaert not even trying and coming 3rd. Soon after the KoM sprint, Briggs and Brammeier join Zabel, Stallaert and Kikuchi, and form a 5 men breakaway.
They won't be alone though, now it's Fabrice Jeandesboz, Johim Ariesen and Luke Durbridge who are getting a gap on the peloton now.
After a few kilometers, both groups merge and have 3'38'' on the peloton, so all 8 will form today's breakaway of the day.
With 74km to go, the gap tops at 4'30'', and the peloton is riding at a slow pace. However, Timothy Gudsell can't stay on his bike after a sharp bend, and falls. Luckily, no one has fallen with him, because he was right in the middle of the peloton.
With Gudsell trying to come back, it's Team Venchi that finally decides to start the chase. Bad timing for Gudsell though, who will have a hard time alone, if Venchi keeps pulling hard.
In the second KoM sprint, Zabel takes the first place, with Durbridge in second and Stallaert in third. It's a bit odd to see the Belgian going for it after not bothering in the first one. By now, the gap has been reduced to 3'10'' thanks to Venchi's work.
Bad news for Ferrari now as Tiziano Dall'Antonia falls during the descent of the second climb. He can go on, but the peloton is going fast again after doing the climb at a slow pace, so he'll have to go hard to come back.
The third and last KoM sprint comes right after the second, and it's again Zabel who takes it, ahead of Kikuchi and Stallaert. This means the young VolksWagen rider will be the first KoM leader.
The climb has been slow again in the peloton, and Venchi has disappeared from the front. It's Proximus – Trek pulling now, although they're not going too fast. The gap with the breakaway grows again to 3'45'', while Dall'Antonia is 2'34'' behind the peloton, and Gudsell a further 2'35'' behind the Italian, all this with 47km remaining.
With 35km to go, and with the gap reduced to 2'38'', we have three riders attacking in the peloton, Sébastien Minard and Tom Veelers and Bobbie Traksel. Double attack from the Dutch team, which was expected to give all for Dekkers. Meanwhile in the breakaway, it was Rick Zabel who won the intermediate sprint, beating Brammeier and Stallaert, who has managed to be third in all 4 sprints in the stage.
With 25 to go, the chase group is caught. The breakaway has now just 1'32'' on the peloton, and the bunch sprint seems unavoidable.
The sprinter teams are setting an insane pace now, with Pokerstars, Proximus and Venchi pulling hard, and that's caused Joseph Cooper to fall now.
With 15 to go, Masaaki Kikuchi sees no future for the breakaway, and tries with a solo attack. There doesn't seem to be much hope for him, having 46'' on the peloton, while the other 7 riders of the breakaway still have a small 19'' gap as well.
And then they're caught. Kikuchi is alone in front with a 30'' gap.
But the Japanese rider is spent. He is caught with 11km to go, and the sprinter teams begin the sprint preparation.
But wait, mass crash in the peloton! Over 30 riders hit the tarmac, with Alex Dowsett as the most important rider there. The crash will force three riders to leave the race:
Genki Yamamoto
Michael Matthews
Ben Jacques-Maynes
won't finish today's stage. We can only hope those who will be able to stay in the race haven't any injury.
Back to the front though, while the peloton went under the 5km banner, one sprint train gains some advantage, it's Unicredit's with:
Giovanni Visconti
Boy Van Poppel
Mirko Lorenzetto
Danilo Napolitano
Peter Kennaugh, who is taking advantage of the Italian team's work
Under 3 to go, and Proximus is setting an alternative train for Mark Cavendish, although they still have to make up some ground.
We enter the last km, and Napolitano launches his sprint, with both Kennaugh and Vantomme coming fast, as does Mitch Docker. Cavendish is too far back, hurted by his inferior leadout, so is Claudio Corioni, who followed the Manxman’s wheel.
Nobody can match Napolitano's speed though, so the Italian scores a dominant win.
Behind him, the South African champion Daryl Impey gets a great second place, while Vantomme just holds third over Kennaugh. Finally Cavendish is 5th, not bad considering how far back he started the sprint, although Napolitano was still the faster sprinter today. Anyway, beware with Impey, he seems in great form, and can climb quite well for a sprinter, and while the GC contenders are much stronger in the hills, the parcours isn't exactly selective.
The group of those affected by the mass crash came in over 7 minutes later, effectively ending Dowsett's GC hopes, and thus Rapha Condor's eventual alternative to Bellis in case anything went wrong. The British squad surely hopes he hasn't anything serious so he can help Bellis in the next stages.
