Tour of Britain - stage 6
Smowz
i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/stage6-1.jpg

Stage six should give the peleton a breather as we have a flat run in to Gateshead in the North East of England. We have a Brit in the lead in Jonathan Bellis, but as yet no British stage winner. In the sprints German Mohs, Italian Ponzi and Columbian Forero have won the days on stages 1 and 2 and 5.

Time gaps have opened up, but not significantly meaning it is likely a breakaway will be kept on a short leash. Even so we do have a seven strong breakaway that establishes itself early on. Lequatre of LEGO is the most promenint name being the current KOM leader, also here is Falcon’s Christoff Van Heerden nine points behind Lequatre in the KOM. Also here are Lagutin (El- Al) , McEvoy (Youtube), Frischkorn (Mercedes), Wei (Bbox) and Wegelius (Falcon)

Seven man breakaway

Lequatre is also the best placed on GC with McEvoy, both being 3.36 back. McEvoy takes third at one of the sprint primes and wins the second prime to be breakaway leader and the time gap does allow the peleton to give it some freedom. McEvoy frustrates Lequatre a little by taking the maximum at the first KoM prime but the LEGO man does win the second.

Lequatre takes more climbing points

This takes the KOM leader to 38 points, some 13 points ahead of Barberi in second place. Christoff Van Heerden can only take the one point for 4th place at both moving him to 24 points moving to third place.

With 70km to go the gap is 6.34, quite big perhaps partly due to the team in charge of chasing... Cillit Bang.

Jonny Bellis’ team en masse at the front

The sprinters teams realise they will have to chase this down themselves, it isn’t often Pokerstars will allow a break to succeed and we see the green jerseys at the front once more with 100% Me. The effect is immediate with 40km to go the gap is only 2.41.

Sprinters teams bring it down fast

It was a fairly windy one today, not extreme but enough to keep the sprint trains from forming in the usual way. Pokerstars were near to the front with Maaskant leading out Mohs, a radical move from 100% Me though was Cavendish leading out Swift!

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/5-3500togosprintershuddle.jpg
3500 to go: Sprinters huddle

On the Pokerstars train we have Maaskant, Mohs, Vantomme, Forero, Rowe and Eisel (Dockx at the front for some reason). The 100% Me train is Cavendish, Swift, Haedo and Bellis, just across is Vespas Duo Ascani and Gatto with Hutarovich on the wheels. To the right of the pace snake is Bozic, Abdullah, Hochman and Ciolek.

The Cavendish, Swift train moves forward unsurprisingly as we begin our sprint.

2.1 to go: 100% have ignited their super train here

Slight issue however is Eric Mohs is following on Swift’s wheel with Highroad’s Vantomme not too far behind. As we approach the last kilometre the motoring German comes inside of Cav, Swift reacts well though looking to go the otherside of Cav.

1.1km to go: Mohs and Swift ignite

The Gateshead crowd sense a British and 100% Me victory here and go wild – it is a real head to head between Mohs and Swift.

Gaan do eet Sweefty – cheer the Geordies

Down the straight there is nothing to choose between the uber sprinters, Vantomme is coming through to third place.

200m to go: It is tight

...and Look away British fans.

Mohs denies the Brits for the second time
The German takes his second stage victory here, Pokerstars will be delighted. Swift is second, Vantomme third and Cavendish stays on for 5th just behind Ciolek.
