Tour of Britain - stage 2

We travel across middle England today East to West from Milton Keynes to Newbury. It is a proper road stage with the late climbs up Streatly Hill and the Sheffield Park climb cresting at 16km to go. It could be a bit tricky for some of the sprinters and perhaps one of the punchaers will give it a dig.

Anyway plenty of interest early on as we have a number of sprint primes in the various towns on the route. A lot of attacks means a break has not completely settled down before the first sprint taken by Andreas Stauff (LEGO).

The front two riders keeping clear of other breakaway men for some time reversing their positions for the KOM prime.

It is a four pointer climb, Streatly hill later is a 10 point climb with Sheffield Parks difficulty another 4 pointer. Things still have not settled down by the next sprint, more points for Stauff and Van Heerden. There seems to be some agreement between the two as Stauff takes the sprint over the South African Falcon rider. Ghyselllink (Highroad) is the rider who takes third.

These two are joined after the second sprint by the third place man, Martynenko, Nepomnyachskiy (Now known as Nepo) and also Burke (Youtube).

Six men up front

There are six more chasing behind in this chaotic opening half of the stage this is led by two Mercedes men Bol and Frischkorn. Also here are Howard (Milka), Brammeier (Cillit Bang), Wei(Bbox) and De Weert (Highroad).

Second six

The two groups do merge with about 70km to go, giving Highroad, Milka and Mercedes two men in the break. Before they do merge Van Heerden takes the last of the sprint trio ahead of Ghysellink and Stauff. The net result is that Van Heerden and Stauff have taken 14 points and 14 bonus seconds.

The gap for these 12 to the peleton isn’t huge it is only 3.15, some of the teams particularly Pokerstars are not really happy with it. But they do not wish to catch the move and as they ease up a bit Vespa’s Verbist launches a bridging move.

Eric Mohs team in green keep a vice like grip, it would seem doubtful that Mohs could win this given his known dislike of climbing. But he could hold the jersey deep into this stage race and who knows if he gets enough bonuses?

Onto the big Streatly hill climb, which may well decide our first KOM, Milka’s tough to say Y Nepo attacks the break to sieze the full points.

Milka’s youngster eager to make a name for himself

Full results here: Nepo - > De Weert - > Frischkorn - > Ghysellink - > Bol - > Van Heerden. Yes the Milka man takes the lead in the KOM. After this the break is joined by Verbist giving it fresh impetus with 40km to go it has a gap of 2.51.

With 100% Me lending Pokerstars a hand in the pacing it begins to reduce but the break still are clear before the last climb. Ghysellink of Highroad attacks here followed by Nepo.

Nepo however takes second to secure the mountains jersey for the day ahead of Martynenko and then Pasamontes (Mercedes) leads the peleton over.

In the peleton a few of the punchaers decide to stretch their legs seeking an early opportunity of time gaps. It is led predictably by French dynamo Thomas Voeckler.

He is followed by British champion Jonathan Bellis, Highroad youngster Rob Ruijgh and Mercedes man Ghyllebert. Something of a big day for the surnames beginning with Ghylle here as the Mercedes man pushes past all the attackers and goes solo.

It has caught the peleton who are trying to regroup for the sprint with 5km to go here is the situation:
Ghyllebert
Bellis, Ruijgh, Voeckler, Nepo at 21 seconds
Peleton at 47 seconds

Voeckler and Nepo drop back and behind Ghyllebert the peleton loom large on Bellis and Ruijgh.

2.1km to go: the peleton look to swallow their prey

The pack is one the Bellis/Ruijgh duo but still are some distance away from Ghyllebert. As we go overhead we can see the Milka duo of Vandeareden and Forero level with Bellis. It is Bernie Eisal to the right of them and yesterdays 3rd place man Ciolek to the left, the closest other sprinter is Cavendish towards the bottom.

The Milka boys look to chase it down

Ghyllebert wakes up a bit late to the fact the others are gaining on him and stops messing about with his jersey and gets out of the saddle. Forero can smell it here though and after an excellent lead out he launches.

Forero nabs the Mercedes man with 500m to go – Ciolek is coming too and it is yellow jersey Eric Mohs making a massive late burst inside of the German.

This Milka team have huge momentum as Forero takes the stage victory.

Mohs’ late burst nabs him 3rd place behind Ciolek, the German defends his lead in the GC and Points Jersey competition.
