Tour of Beijing - Stage 5
cio93
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/5_zps0a3d9ef1.jpg

The last stage is classified as flat, but everyone strongly doubts the real sprinters will have a chance considering they didn't yesterday on a much easier profile.
So the real question will rather be if someone still has ambitions to improve his GC position, and of course whether i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngWegmann or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini will win this race! It might be decided on countback, so every position could count today.

Our break of the day consists ofsix riders.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngLövkvist
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.pngMorton
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngKoretzky
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.pngPibernik
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.pngAtkins
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.pngMerino Criado

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0007_zpsd7623dfc.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngKoretzky already has 14 KoM points and uses the first two climbs to put himself to 30. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.pngVan der Schueren has to hope the break is caught early, otherwise his jersey might be gone.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0005_zps0a08d8ad.jpg

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0008_zps1949f4e2.jpg

We see the sprinter teams doing the work today, they still seem to believe in a miracle, especially as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.pngLo Cicero and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.pngKupfernagel are two of the weakest sprinters in the field when it comes to handling hills.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0009_zps404347c4.jpg

The intermediate sprints are not contested today.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0010_zps2e1775ac.jpg

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0011_zps068ba247.jpg

The gap topped at 7 minutes on the flat, so there's no danger for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngWegmann with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngLövkvist nearly 11 minutes back on GC.

As i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngKoretzky attacks towards the second-to-last KoM banner to take the lead, the bunch is only 3 minutes behind, but the pace is gentle as noone wants to drop their own sprinter while relaying.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0012_zps5cfa8e68.jpg

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0013_zps0b44c1e2.jpg

The Cat.1 climb looks really hard, and it proves to be just that for the break. It shatters into pieces, and rather unsurprisingly, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngLövkvist is the fastest uphill. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngKoretzky follows ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.pngMorton.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0014_zps1041c0d8.jpg

Over the top, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngLövkvist has about 30 seconds of advantage over Koretzky, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.pngMerino Criado just being caught 2:40 back and everyone else alone in between.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0016_zps3200d883.jpg

In the downhill, of course, we get splits again!
Most sprinters are in the latter group, aside from the puncheurs with a good sprint, only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngIglinski, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ubi_zps47ce5481.pngLorenzetto and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/amx_zps91aadbbd.pngBreschel keep themselves in the front part.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0017_zps36f8d935.jpg

And who else but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngGautier decides to drop back for no apparent reason?
This time, he fools i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngBellis as well who might just throw away a stage win and his points jersey here.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0018_zpsb83e99ff.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngLövkvist meanwhile keeps a steady advantage over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngKoretzky, who himself has another 40 seconds on i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.pngMorton. The bunch doesn't seem to be too keen on catching any of them, which is obvious considering Sram could lose the GC win if i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini takes more bonus seconds than i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngWegmann.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0020_zpsb7620a0c.jpg

The slow speed means a second group of about 30 get back into the main field. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngGautier and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngBellis are lucky today, and a few sprinters are back as well.
Nevertheless, the speed was high enough to catch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.pngPibernik and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.pngAtkins.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0022_zpse6a9e8ff.jpg

But it's not really important anyway, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngLövkvist turns onto the finish straight 3 minutes ahead.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0023_zpsa18fa65d.jpg

Even i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.pngMorton kept his lead over the peloton and could take the last seconds away from Zaini.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0025_zpsa1608280.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngLövkvist saves the race for Swedbank a bit with this win on the final day.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0027_zps2d6dec60.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngWegmann leads the peloton into the last metres and could catch i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.pngMorton, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini is too far back to make any impact.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0029_zpse36aeb68.jpg

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0030_zps417ea4bd.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.pngMorton takes third behind i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngKoretzky anyway.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%205/PCM0031_zps2ef9a5c5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngFeillu gives BPost some much needed points as fourth, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngWegmann can celebrate a nice GC win and Sram go out with a bang.
