Tour of Beijing - Stage 3
cio93
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/3_zpsa771fb4d.jpg

Probably the decisive stage of this tour today, with a difficult Cat.1 climb opening the final up to the Great Wall in Badaling.

The first group riding away consists of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngKonte, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngGougeard, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.pngPibernik and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.pngCiccarese.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0002_zps65e03b23.jpg

They try to hold off the peloton who is frantically chasing a flurry of attacks, but it is to no avail.
By the time the first KoM prize comes up, we do see a 5-man group getting a decent advantage though.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngSousa takes the points ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngPasseron and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngKoretzky, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngAbelouache and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngPreidler make up the rest of our break.
Interestingly, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngSousa and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngPreidler are two of the only 19 riders within 20 seconds of race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini!
It's really surprising this group was allowed away, while roughly 5 others without any immediate pursuers were reeled in...

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0003_zps5430f014.jpg

The second KoM is not far, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngPasseron wins the Cat.3 from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngSousa and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngPreidler. The good work amongst the breakaway riders saw their advantage go out to 4 minutes already.
Amazing pictures just as they pass the banner though, this is either synchronized swimming without water or everyone's deodorant was stolen from the team hotels overnight!

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0006_zps113ee0ba.jpg

Behind, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngMeiji still take it rather easy.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0007_zpsf523b4c7.jpg

The Cat.1 climb gives us our first fight for the mountain points with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngPasseron attacking to overtake i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngSousa for the full points. The Rothaus DS realised the KoM jersey could compensate for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngBellis' weaker performance here. That said, we can already announce i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.pngVan der Schueren will keep his jersey by two points.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0009_zps005cf4a8.jpg

Nearly 5 minutes behind, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngHoogerland and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngDowsett attack as they pass the 1k banner.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0013_zps10a10a0f.jpg

Over the top and down the descent, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngDowsett couldn't keep i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngHoogerland's wheel, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngGautier and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.pngEfimkin caught up.
Yes, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngGautier!
The group has 40 seconds on the bunch, but face nearly 6 minutes of a gap to the BotD. On the other hand, there are still 85 kilometres to go, so everything is possible.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0014_zps5d442445.jpg

The break closes in on the first sprint, and obviously, only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngSousa and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngPreidler are interested. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngPreidler is basically the worst sprinter you can imagine, so it's an easy task for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngSousa to take the seconds.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0044_zps4ccbd67c.jpg

Minutes later, the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngGautier group couldn't keep the speed that several teams in pursuit could offer.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0015_zps048e1753.jpg

The second intermediate sprint gives us the same result. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngPreidler is doing well to keep it rather close, though.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0016_zps84c7c69e.jpg

On the flat towards the Great Wall, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngVansummeren smells a chance. He takes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.pngWang, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.pngPineau, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.pngEfimkin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngHoogerland with him.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0018_zps17502326.jpg
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0019_zpsd5eed402.jpg

They work together pretty well, and until i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.pngVespa and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngMeiji really pick up speed, they only trail the break by 60 seconds while there is a gap of nearly 90 behind!

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0020_zpscb787d84.jpg

Soon, the front groups merge, and it's not that the break slowed down to be caught, the middle group accelerated further while the gap between the front 5 and the peloton stayed the same all the way through. 2 minutes now.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0021_zps15b68f71.jpg

10k to go, and the favourites in the bunch see the danger. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngFroome wants to attack across, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngBellis is quick to respond.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0022_zps6f1a551e.jpg

Pellizotti and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.pngGinanni catch the train as well, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini struggled to get through the riders in front to chase!

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0023_zps47e07a90.jpg

A kilometre later, we can see the new situation.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngFroome and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngBellis lead i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.pngGinanni plus i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.pngPellizotti by a bit while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngKessler tries to attack out of the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini group where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/src_zps90f6d964.pngWegmann and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.pngJiao are present as well.
Yes, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngKessler! i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngFlügel still did not attack out of the peloton.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0025_zps6afdf9af.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngFroome and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngBellis soon catch the front group where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/sbp_zpsa477b496.pngHoogerland just attacked. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.pngEfimkin follows and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngVansummeren tries to go as well.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0027_zps0289852d.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.pngPineau joins the three riders ahead.
30 seconds down, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngAbelaouche paces i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngFroome through the 5k banner while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.pngGinanni made it in there as well now.
Anoher 53 seconds further, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini finds it hard to close the gaps and sees his leaders jersey slip away!

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini works hard at the front and nearly managed to get back just before the uphill sprint starts. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.pngEfimkin tries to escape on the horizon.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0033_zpsed86bdfa.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngVansummeren takes the lead as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/luk_zps37d4ab7e.pngEfimkin drops all the way through the group, and on the other side of it, group i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.pngZaini caught up!

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0036_zps7e5ce5aa.jpg
i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0035_zps030cc4d7.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.pngPineau passes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.pngVansummeren, but the strong trio of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngFroome, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngBellis and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.pngGinanni storms through.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0037_zpse418b06c.jpg

Of those three, only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngFroome can really challenge i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.pngPineau though.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0038_zpsf7bde55e.jpg

And indeed i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.pngFroome compensates for the horrible first days and takes it on the line!
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.pngPineau holds on for second while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/trh_zpsd616c798.pngBellis has to settle for third.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0040_zpsaa0ab56e.jpg

At the back end, we see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngPreidler will probably be the last rider to receive the same time as the winner while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.pngPellizotti loses time.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0041_zps5859788e.jpg

So what happened to all the other favourites and GC riders?

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.pngSchreurs is the best of the rest just ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.pngRocchetti, but already more than two minutes down. GC hopes lost.

i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s408/Cio1993/Man-Game/Beijing/Stage%203/PCM0042_zps7dbf79e3.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vwm_zps2ffcd386.pngFlügel? Kessler and Preidler somehow saved the day for VW, but their leader completely messes up this stage and finishes nearly four minutes after Froome alongside i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.pngTaborre, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.pngCosta or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.pngVisconti.
