Stage 9 should be the key stage of the race, with 18km of cobblestones set to rip the race into pieces.
This is Team Bpost's 'big day', so it is a bit of a surprise to see this is also the first day they have decided to go for the breakaway. Remco Broers makes the move, and he is one of the stronger cobbled riders in the race. Joining him is regular attacker Suleiman Kangangi.
Broers won the two intermediate sprints, while Schinker and Wippert each grabbed themself a 3rd place and thus 2 bonus seconds.
Not only do we have cobbles today, but also a strong wind!
With 30km to go - closing in on the cobbles - the break have been joined by Dries Van der Ginst.
But ING and MTN have been working hard in the peloton, and they are nearly caught as the cobbles arrive. Broers and Van der Ginst give it one last effort, and really attack the start of the cobblestones.
JURGEN ROELANDTS CRASHES! 5 stage wins so far, suddenly his race has gone rapidly downhill.
Curiously, despite being within reach of the peloton. Broers has pulled out his gap to over a minute and a half. Van der Ginst trails him by 25 seconds.
Bpost are at the front of the peloton ... but theyre not really doing anything. Voeckler has ridden himself clear.
Tom Veelers now attacks! Finally some action and the Dutchman is chasing a relegation-saving move.
Vanspeybrouck had been towards the front of the field, but is now slipping back down it. On his way back, we see that Roelandts has recovered. It helps when the peloton lacks any sort of urgency.
Veelers struggled to push on after his move, and now Voeckler has joined him. Riding across the gap are Greipel and Abakoumov, with Armavia leading the peloton.
This leads to Voeckler and Veelers being caught.
And the peloton just sort of stop caring...
Broers now leads by 3 minutes, this makes him the virtual race leader!
Still fighting hard, 30 seconds behind him, is Dries van der Ginst. 949 riders have scored ranking points this season, and he is not one of them, but he did play a role in Het Nieuwsblad winning D2 last year. It looks like he will be scoring ranking points now though, can he even manage to catch Broers?
Dear Peloton.
What. Are. You. Doing?
Nothing. A farcial ride by them, as now Roelandts leads the pack. Trying to defend the lead? Maybe, but the pace still isnt high, and the gap is up to 4 minutes.
Well it isn't the Bpost rider we were expecting to be doing it, but exiting the cobbles, and Remco Broers is riding the team towards the result they wanted.
He has maintained more of less the same gap over Van der Ginst for the entire cobbled section, and that does not change on the last few kilometres.
Remco Broers cruises home to win the stage.
2nd place for Van der Ginst. Great effort by him.
Eventually, the peloton near the finish. Just over a kilometre out, Stallaert goes early to catch everyone out. It is a real shame we did not see Bpost try to destroy the peloton today, as they surely could have done, but they are still coming out of the day strongly.
The surprise tactic did not quite work though, as the sprinters come back at him at the end, and it is 3rd for Greipel, 4th for Roelandts. The gap is over 4 minutes though, so Broers takes over the race lead!
And that ends a quite disappointing stage. The only notable time loss was for sprinter Hochmann, who punctured right before the end of the cobbles.
