Tour du Faso - Stage 8
SportingNonsense
So finally we have had a 2nd team winning a stage. Will today see a 3rd?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-1.jpg

Having previously shown no interest in attacking, HTC-Nieuwsblad are playing a different game today. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.png Vandenbergh attacks from the gun.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-2.jpg

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Marque joins him, but does not fight him at the intermediate sprints - Vandenbergh easily won the first 2 to try to move up in GC.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-3.jpg

ING have turned off their sprints chasing mode, but MTN are carrying on from yesterday in ramping up the pace in the few kilometres before them. It seems pointless, as nobody else try to beat i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Abdallah, as the Egyptian takes 3rd at the first two sprints.

For the 3rd sprint though, it looks like MTN could catch the break just before it.

Not quite, as it turns out. Abdallah must again settle for 3rd, having passed Marque just after the line.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-4.jpg

Schinker and Stallaert fought Abdallah here, which makes Kenya Airways' tactics seem bizarre. Why send Marque in the break, if you want Schinker to have a chance at gaining bonus seconds?

The break are caught here though, which is terrible news for Vandenberg with 30km to go. He won't be able to hold on to the peloton for this long, and does get dropped. No GC gain for him!

After testing the waters with a leadout attempt yesterday, which gave Greipel the win, Die Berg return today with a full train. You have to wonder why they have waited until now, as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/dbg_zps356cc31d.png Chavanel, Hochmann and Abakoumov make for a formidable lineup.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-5.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Greipel knows what is good for him and gets on Abakoumov's wheel - curiously with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Vingerling on his wheel, infront of Roelandts and Vaitkus.

ING are back to aiming for the stage finishes today with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ing_zps78b9af5e.png King and Thire to leadout Kip. Following are Ghafari, Veelers, Wippert, Schinker, Vasylyuk and Stallaert.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-6.jpg

Hochmann opens the sprint only to see Abakoumov crazily go early instead. And look at these tactics from i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png WWE! Vingerling drops back to push Roelandts away from Greipel, clever stuff!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-7.jpg

As Kip tries to catch up with Greipel, Roelandts is struggling to get going again, and now has quite a lot of ground to make up.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-8.jpg

Into the final kilometre, Greipel again says thanks to Abakoumov and moves into the lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-9.jpg

Vaitkus, Veelers and Vasylyuk are going well, but Roelandts is up to speed now and charging after Greipel.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-10.jpg

And in a fantastic display of speed, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/btc_zpse1fa0b09.png Jurgen Roelandts wins his 5th stage of the race.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/fas8-11.jpg

Greipel did all he could, but that is only enough for 2nd, while Vaitkus takes 3rd.

In perhaps ominous news ahead of tomorrow's key cobbled stage, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bps_zps2b426596.png Vanspeybrouck delivers his best performance yet with 11th place. He needs to go very well tomorrow, with 2'25 to make up on Roelandts.

Time bonuses put Abdallah up to 14th place overall, just 2 seconds away from the Top 10.
