Two straight victories to Pokerstars and everyone else is going green with envy. We have a very short hop today and most will hope for a slightly simpler stage.
So two mid stage sprint points, Weiss picked up 18 seconds yesterday and moved right up to 4th on GC as a result of holding onto the peleton. Todays short stage gives a great chance for that sort of movement. Three men decide this gamble is worth it... Zirbel (Mercedes), Margalit (El Al) and Hoffmann (Cillit Bang).
Zirbel started the day 33rd at 40 seconds back, the other two have lost time so you can largely forget my waffling there! Still these three may have a chance if the peleton allow them some freedom.
Three man break away from the peleton
The American Zirbel in the break managed to gain 10 seconds at least by winning the first sprint and coming second at the other. Hoffmann matching his achievements the El Al rider was third at both.
Sprint 1:
1. Zirbel
2. Hoffmann
3. Margalit
Sprint 2:
1.Hoffmann
2. Zirbel
3. Margalit
Back in the peleton things are feeling quite routine as the team in green set a steady tempo.
Pokerstars on front with David Boucher
However with 37km to go four riders challenge the Pokestars routine by attacking away, the names are riders who have lost time on previous stages.
Kuchunski (Bacardi), Vansummeran (Intesa), Verbist (Vespa) and Masciarelli (Pirelli) are the riders.
Four men look to break up the monotony
They are shut down, but their move has ruffled the feathers as that desert wind as things start to split in the middle of the peleton.
A 37 -43 split in the peleton appears
The front part of the peleton catches the breakaway and most of the main sprinters are there. However the riders high up on GC that are not really sprinters such as Terpstra, Wiggins, Quinzato and Van Impe are in this second group. Despite the GC leader being in the front group, Ian Stannard is still trying to help Vespa bring it back together!
Is Stannard aware of whose in his group?
He does manage to pretty much manage to pull it all together as up front everyone is trying to prepare themselves for a sprint. With 2km to go the battle for the stage win is well defined with two definate sprint trains.
Pokerstars line vs Pirelli line
In that Pokerstars like we have Kluge then Sulzberger, Murphy and Blythe with Mohs someway off the back (with Davis, Van Heerden and Haedo). The Pirelli riders are Paolini and Loddo and it is these two who begin to pull clear as Kluge and Murphy realise they have lost their sprinters. 100% Me get stuck behind Kluge which will no doubt irratate the team boss.
Pirelli duo ease away from Kluge et al
It is Loddo who eases past as Paolini takes the foot off the pedal it is Cucinotta who comes through for second with Davis 3rd, Van Heerden 4th.
Loddo takes a easy sprint win for Pirelli
Mohs did not sprint that well today but keeps yellow for another day ahead of Terpstra who looked like losing groung at one point. Blythe is down to 5th after being in contention at that sprint with Cucinotta (2nd on stage) up to 3rd, Loddo up to 4th and Davis up to 9th. The Mercedes bonus plan worked in that Zirbel stuck with the peleton he only moves up to 17th today.
