Tour of Taiwan - Stage 5
SportingNonsense
Stage 5 is a hilly stage, although upon first glance you might not think so. The early climb aside, there is a lot of flat on the route today. A steep rise in the final kilometre gives the opportunity for the hilly riders to earn some time bonuses though, and they surely need it.

With one flat stage to go, riders are going to need at least a 20 second advantage to be confident of staying ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis in GC. At the moment, only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin has a sufficient cushion.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-1.jpg

Plenty of early attacks with King of the Mountains points being on offer so early in the stage. First over the line is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Maxim Burlutsky, the 6 points moving him back up into 2nd in the KoM standings, but still 16 points behind the leader Cardoso.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Koretzky, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Seledkov and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Ortega followed him over and they were joined in the breakaway by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Gaywood, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Ford, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png De Bie and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Fuglsang.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-3.jpg

The best placed rider in here is 39th overall i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Koretzky, 2'49 down. He is the only one interested in the intermediate sprints, and bags himself 12 bonus seconds. Not that it helps much, as he started the day more than 12 seconds behind 38th overall.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-4.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Cisco have controlled the peloton all day. They've reduced the gap to 2 minutes by 20km to go, already ensuring Efimkin remains the virtual race leader.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-5.jpg

Two riders who have had forgettable races go on the attack. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Konovalovas got himself dropped on the final climb yesterday, while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Hatanaka lost time due to a crash earlier in the race.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-6.jpg

The move holds off Cisco for a few kilometre, but that is all. AirBaltic try a different tactic as they send their new team leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Mandri away, following the move of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.png Armee.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-7.jpg

Only Mandri is able to reach the breakaway, whose lead is now falling below a minute into the final 10 kilometres.

The Estonian just watches on however as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Seledkov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Ford and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Burlutsky make their last bid for victory.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-8.jpg

Mandri and the rest of the break are caught, and it is surely a matter of time for the other 3, despite i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Ford's best efforts.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-9.jpg

But with Mandri and Koretzky, the only potential threats to the GC now caught, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Cisco feel that they have done enough and drop their pace.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-10.jpg

Other team leaders are near the front but no team is willing to take over from Cisco, who no longer need to chase. Infact 3 riders mopping up the bonus seconds works quite nicely for them.

The gap rockets back up to a minute, and the stage win is back on the cards for the break. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Ford leads the way, with a 20 second gap on Seledkov and Burlutsky.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-11.jpg

All 3 have had a successful history from breakaways across ProTour, CT and last year's Division 2, and that looks set to continue here for one of them at least, with the uphill finish now in sight.

Back in the peloton, with the pace slowed, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Bole goes onto the attack. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Mandri and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Hatanaka follow.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-12.jpg

Into the final kilometre for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Ford - victory on his mind as he holds onto that lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-13.jpg

But i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Seledkov has clearly been holding something back, and launches towards the Australian leaving Burlutsky behind.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-14.jpg

Panic time for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png William Ford who struggles to respond as Seledkov moves alongside.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-15.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Seledkov takes it! 'Stealing' the victory on the line from Ford.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-16.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Burlutsky holds on for 3rd - a good result for Armavia

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-17.jpg

No gaps for the late peloton attackers but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Mandri is rewarded for his aggressiveness with 4th place.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai5-18.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Rodrigues darted out of the pack to take 5th, going past i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Bole and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mei_zpsbbaf4141.png Hatanaka.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Roy took the final rankings points position in 8th, ahead of Cisco pair i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin and Salerno. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis was 12th, but that 9th for Efimkin gives him the lead in the Points classification.

The only consolation prize for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Oz Cycling, after narrowly missing victory, is that they take the outright lead in the teams classification.
