Stage 5 is a hilly stage, although upon first glance you might not think so. The early climb aside, there is a lot of flat on the route today. A steep rise in the final kilometre gives the opportunity for the hilly riders to earn some time bonuses though, and they surely need it.
With one flat stage to go, riders are going to need at least a 20 second advantage to be confident of staying ahead of Davis in GC. At the moment, only Efimkin has a sufficient cushion.
Plenty of early attacks with King of the Mountains points being on offer so early in the stage. First over the line is Maxim Burlutsky, the 6 points moving him back up into 2nd in the KoM standings, but still 16 points behind the leader Cardoso.
Koretzky, Seledkov and Ortega followed him over and they were joined in the breakaway by Gaywood, Ford, De Bie and Fuglsang.
The best placed rider in here is 39th overall Koretzky, 2'49 down. He is the only one interested in the intermediate sprints, and bags himself 12 bonus seconds. Not that it helps much, as he started the day more than 12 seconds behind 38th overall.
Cisco have controlled the peloton all day. They've reduced the gap to 2 minutes by 20km to go, already ensuring Efimkin remains the virtual race leader.
Two riders who have had forgettable races go on the attack. Konovalovas got himself dropped on the final climb yesterday, while Hatanaka lost time due to a crash earlier in the race.
The move holds off Cisco for a few kilometre, but that is all. AirBaltic try a different tactic as they send their new team leader Mandri away, following the move of Armee.
Only Mandri is able to reach the breakaway, whose lead is now falling below a minute into the final 10 kilometres.
The Estonian just watches on however as Seledkov, Ford and Burlutsky make their last bid for victory.
Mandri and the rest of the break are caught, and it is surely a matter of time for the other 3, despite Ford's best efforts.
But with Mandri and Koretzky, the only potential threats to the GC now caught, Cisco feel that they have done enough and drop their pace.
Other team leaders are near the front but no team is willing to take over from Cisco, who no longer need to chase. Infact 3 riders mopping up the bonus seconds works quite nicely for them.
The gap rockets back up to a minute, and the stage win is back on the cards for the break. Ford leads the way, with a 20 second gap on Seledkov and Burlutsky.
All 3 have had a successful history from breakaways across ProTour, CT and last year's Division 2, and that looks set to continue here for one of them at least, with the uphill finish now in sight.
Back in the peloton, with the pace slowed, Bole goes onto the attack. Mandri and Hatanaka follow.
Into the final kilometre for Ford - victory on his mind as he holds onto that lead.
But Seledkov has clearly been holding something back, and launches towards the Australian leaving Burlutsky behind.
Panic time for William Ford who struggles to respond as Seledkov moves alongside.
And Seledkov takes it! 'Stealing' the victory on the line from Ford.
Burlutsky holds on for 3rd - a good result for Armavia
No gaps for the late peloton attackers but Mandri is rewarded for his aggressiveness with 4th place.
Rodrigues darted out of the pack to take 5th, going past Bole and Hatanaka.
Roy took the final rankings points position in 8th, ahead of Cisco pair Efimkin and Salerno. Davis was 12th, but that 9th for Efimkin gives him the lead in the Points classification.
The only consolation prize for Oz Cycling, after narrowly missing victory, is that they take the outright lead in the teams classification.
