Tour of Taiwan - Stage 4
SportingNonsense
The fourth stage of the race, and the second hilly stage. A big climb dominates the middle of the stage, before an uphill finish later on. Can it create more gaps than Stage 3, for the likes of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Ginanni and co to lead the way to gaining time on the race leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-1.jpg

4 riders enter into the breakaway, including the King of the Mountains leader i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Cardoso. With him are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Makino, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Ford and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png De Bie. The Japanese rider took the first sprint.

Chasing them was i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Konte. An interesting move from Jaguar as he was one of the 42 to finish in the front group yesterday. He joins the breakaway and subsequently wins the intermediate sprint which could put him in the GC Top 10 later if he avoids losing any time.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-2.jpg

Oddly, we soon see Jaguar-Eritel, Pivovarna-Lasko and Adira Isq-Project sending riders to the front of the peloton to relay.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-3.jpg

So the break only has i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Ford and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Makino who are willing to work.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-4.jpg

Vueling and Hollister take over the peloton pace setting though, to restore unity to the breakaway

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-5.jpg

We are on the big climb, and unsurprisingly i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Cardoso ensures that he crosses the summit first to extend his KoM lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-6.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Rocchetti tried to attack the peloton before the summit but did not stay clear for long. Nor did the attacks of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Rodrigues, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Schurter and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Gaywood at the start of the descent.

The gap to the break has been cut to 2 minutes with 30km to go, and we have 10km more of descending before the next round of moves from the peloton. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Lejman, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/emt_zps170ae4bd.png Rocchetti, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Wang and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Durasek.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-7.jpg

They get a gap, which lasts for a while. But by 10km to go they are barely clear of the peloton. Not giving up, they attack again - with the break now in sight a minute up the road.

And with the proximity to the finish, some bigger names are now joining the move: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Ben Nasser, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Mehr-Wenige and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett. Ben Nasser and Dowsett going on the attack as teammates De Bie and Konte drop back from the break.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-8.jpg

Ford, Cardoso and Makino from the break are joined by these 7 attackers, and together the ten hold a 37 second lead into the final 5 kilometres. It is a particularly good opportunity for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Ben Nasser, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Mehr-Wenige and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett to use as a springboard clear of their main rivals.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-9.jpg

But they had better act quick as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Ginanni launches an attack.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-10.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Roy, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Sinkewitz, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Ghisalberti and even i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis make to follow the move.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-11.jpg

So many attackers makes it impossible for gaps to form, so all groups merge together and the pace dips. Slovenian champion i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Bole looks to take advantage.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-12.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Wang tries to follow but cannot as the sprint launches with Bole holding a slight advantage on the field.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-13.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Ginanni starts the sprint the strongest, like yesterday, and moves into the lead

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-14.jpg

But yet again he is unable to hold that pace, despite on paper being the strongest. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin move past him, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Sinkewitz and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Ben Nasser also in contention.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-15.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Roy, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Mehr-Wenige, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Taborre and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Lloyd are next, but a gap is starting to emerge!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-16.jpg

Ginanni can't seem to find a 2nd kick, so the stage looks set to be between Dowsett and Efimkin - a Tour Down Under deja vu.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-17.jpg

And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin takes it for a 2nd consecutive victory!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-18.jpg

2nd for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett and only 3rd for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Ginanni.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Sinkewitz edges a close battle for 4th over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Ben Nasser.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-19.jpg

These 5 are given the same time, but they have gained a very useful 24 seconds at least on everyone else as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Roy comes home in 6th.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-20.jpg

It looks like Roy, Mehr-Wenige, Lloyd and Taborre may have a gap aswell, but no, the judges rule that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Schurter is close enough to their wheel to prevent a big enough difference forming

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-21.jpg

Clinging on at the back of this group is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis. And with help from his fellow countryman i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Gerrans, he is going to be awarded the same time as Roy...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai4-22.jpg

The biggest loser today seems to be i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Konovalovas, who finds himself amongst those in the group behind Davis, and losing over a minute.

So a very lucky escape for Davis, but at least he is now out of the race lead with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin taking control of the leaders jersey. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Ginanni is up to 2nd overall but needs to find some more speed if he is to challenge the Russian, it would seem.

Davis only falls as far as 3rd, just ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett who extends his lead in the U25 competition. 2nd to him now is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Konte, who did manage to hold on to the Roy/Davis group after picking up those 6 bonus seconds earlier in the day.

It's tight at the top of the points competition, since Efimkin and Davis now have 2 stage wins each. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis keeps the lead of it, for now, by just 2 points.

Efimkin is also 2nd in the KoM competition, where i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Cardoso holds a good 20 point lead now. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Alstom, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Oz and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Hollister lead the teams competition despite their leaders all losing 24 seconds today.
