The fourth stage of the race, and the second hilly stage. A big climb dominates the middle of the stage, before an uphill finish later on. Can it create more gaps than Stage 3, for the likes of Efimkin, Ginanni and co to lead the way to gaining time on the race leader Davis?
4 riders enter into the breakaway, including the King of the Mountains leader Cardoso. With him are Makino, Ford and De Bie. The Japanese rider took the first sprint.
Chasing them was Konte. An interesting move from Jaguar as he was one of the 42 to finish in the front group yesterday. He joins the breakaway and subsequently wins the intermediate sprint which could put him in the GC Top 10 later if he avoids losing any time.
Oddly, we soon see Jaguar-Eritel, Pivovarna-Lasko and Adira Isq-Project sending riders to the front of the peloton to relay.
So the break only has Ford and Makino who are willing to work.
Vueling and Hollister take over the peloton pace setting though, to restore unity to the breakaway
We are on the big climb, and unsurprisingly Cardoso ensures that he crosses the summit first to extend his KoM lead.
Rocchetti tried to attack the peloton before the summit but did not stay clear for long. Nor did the attacks of Rodrigues, Schurter and Gaywood at the start of the descent.
The gap to the break has been cut to 2 minutes with 30km to go, and we have 10km more of descending before the next round of moves from the peloton. Lejman, Rocchetti, Wang and Durasek.
They get a gap, which lasts for a while. But by 10km to go they are barely clear of the peloton. Not giving up, they attack again - with the break now in sight a minute up the road.
And with the proximity to the finish, some bigger names are now joining the move: Ben Nasser, Mehr-Wenige and Dowsett. Ben Nasser and Dowsett going on the attack as teammates De Bie and Konte drop back from the break.
Ford, Cardoso and Makino from the break are joined by these 7 attackers, and together the ten hold a 37 second lead into the final 5 kilometres. It is a particularly good opportunity for Ben Nasser, Mehr-Wenige and Dowsett to use as a springboard clear of their main rivals.
But they had better act quick as Ginanni launches an attack.
Roy, Efimkin, Sinkewitz, Ghisalberti and even Davis make to follow the move.
So many attackers makes it impossible for gaps to form, so all groups merge together and the pace dips. Slovenian champion Bole looks to take advantage.
Wang tries to follow but cannot as the sprint launches with Bole holding a slight advantage on the field.
Ginanni starts the sprint the strongest, like yesterday, and moves into the lead
But yet again he is unable to hold that pace, despite on paper being the strongest. Dowsett and Efimkin move past him, with Sinkewitz and Ben Nasser also in contention.
Roy, Mehr-Wenige, Taborre and Lloyd are next, but a gap is starting to emerge!
Ginanni can't seem to find a 2nd kick, so the stage looks set to be between Dowsett and Efimkin - a Tour Down Under deja vu.
And Efimkin takes it for a 2nd consecutive victory!
2nd for Dowsett and only 3rd for Ginanni.
Sinkewitz edges a close battle for 4th over Ben Nasser.
These 5 are given the same time, but they have gained a very useful 24 seconds at least on everyone else as Roy comes home in 6th.
It looks like Roy, Mehr-Wenige, Lloyd and Taborre may have a gap aswell, but no, the judges rule that Schurter is close enough to their wheel to prevent a big enough difference forming
Clinging on at the back of this group is Davis. And with help from his fellow countryman Gerrans, he is going to be awarded the same time as Roy...
The biggest loser today seems to be Konovalovas, who finds himself amongst those in the group behind Davis, and losing over a minute.
So a very lucky escape for Davis, but at least he is now out of the race lead with Efimkin taking control of the leaders jersey. Ginanni is up to 2nd overall but needs to find some more speed if he is to challenge the Russian, it would seem.
Davis only falls as far as 3rd, just ahead of Dowsett who extends his lead in the U25 competition. 2nd to him now is Konte, who did manage to hold on to the Roy/Davis group after picking up those 6 bonus seconds earlier in the day.
It's tight at the top of the points competition, since Efimkin and Davis now have 2 stage wins each. Davis keeps the lead of it, for now, by just 2 points.
Efimkin is also 2nd in the KoM competition, where Cardoso holds a good 20 point lead now. Alstom, Oz and Hollister lead the teams competition despite their leaders all losing 24 seconds today.
