Tour of Taiwan - Stage 3
SportingNonsense
The queen stage of the race awaits - surely the stage we will see the biggest time gaps amongst the favourites? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Ginanni, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Dowsett, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Ben Nasser, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Sinkewitz and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Roy are the leading riders to watch, while sprinter i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis holds the race lead.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-1.jpg

For some teams, the best chance of success lies in the breakaway. Indeed, the Tour of Taiwan was won from a breakaway last year. Trying their luck today are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Sai-Udomsin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Kasa, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/jkp_zpsd1d2e7e2.png Choi, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Van Baarle, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Die Bie and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Gaywood.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-2.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Sai-Udomsin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Gaywood take out the two intermediate sprints, with 5 of the break scoring points. Only Kasa misses out, but he wasn't trying to anyway.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-3.jpg

Onto the tough 1st climb, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Kasa does get some points in defence of teammate Cardoso's lead. Not that any of the break attacked for the points, just riding over the top. It was Brit i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Gaywood who led over for top points.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-4.jpg

They lead the peloton by 6 minutes, but some riders have attacked away from it. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Visconti, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Rodrigues, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Zeits, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Schurter. Four good climbers, and they ride their way across to the breakaway.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-5.jpg

The ten hold a lead of just one minute at 20km to go. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/jag_zps1b91f70a.png Jaguar are the team with the largest presence on front of the peloton, but others are also helping out.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-6.jpg

The break know their time is soon to be up, and so a few try to extend their time clear. Oddly it is not the stronger later attackers, but some of the early attackers. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png De Bie and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/cad_zps01f0e9d1.png Gaywood.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-7.jpg

All are caught, and into the final 10 kilometres it is up to the race favourites to create the action. But the next attacks are again from second tier riders. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Schurter again, plus i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rbc_zps9a8b3bfb.png Durasek, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Wang, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/spr_zps39a3252c.png Alizadeh, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Zeits, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Rodrigues, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Visconti, and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/htc_zps6bfb639a.png Armee.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-8.jpg

Going nowhere though as Vespa, Cisco and Vueling keep a firm grip on the front. When with their leaders attack? 5km to go...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-9.jpg

The metres tick by and still nothing... There may be more hilly stages to come, but this is surely the best opportunity! The race enters into a tunnel and this encourages i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/air_zps84b8db92.png Konovalovas to attack.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-10.jpg

Schurter, Wang and Durasek tried to gollow but could not, as the Lithuanian champion earns a gap. Now another National champion is trying to join him: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/aip_zps544721ca.png Mehr-Wenige

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-11.jpg

Inside 2km to go and still the favourites defy their tag by doing nothing but ride towards the front of the group. 26 second lead for Konovalovas.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-12.jpg

Mehr-Wenige closes in on Konovalovas, but i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Betancourt leads the peloton up to the pair of them. And i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Ginanni finally attacks!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-13.jpg

Betancourt looks to follow, as does i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Sinkewitz.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-14.jpg

The strongest puncheur in the race leads into the final kilometre, a great position to be in for the Italian. And he is looking strong!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-15.jpg

Betancourt fades away, so it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/vue_zps51fdf35e.png Sinkewitz who leads the pursuit. The gap looks too big...

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-16.jpg

.. but the German suddenly starts to close in. 400 metres to go.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-17.jpg

The likes of Dowsett, Ben Nasser and Roy don't seem to have it in them today, but where is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Efimkin? Poorly positioned, but he has now moved into 3rd.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-18.jpg

And the Russian is on a charge. Efimkin glides past Sinkewitz towards Ginanni, but the line is close

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-19.jpg

Timed to perfection, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/cis_zpsa215ca85.png Aleksandr Efimkin powers past to win the stage!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-20.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Ginanni seemed in an unbeatable position, but clearly not. 2nd for him as he just holds off a fast finishing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/ozc_zps749fc2f0.png Matt Lloyd.

Speaking of Aussies, do we have a new Nolan Hoffman on our hands in Allan Davis? i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Ben Nasser took 5th on the stage, close enough to Sinkewitz to mean no gap. Match that with 14th on the stage, and Davis remains the race leader.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/tai3-21.jpg

Efimkin, Ginanni and Lloyd do move up to 2nd, 3rd and 4th though, and with 42 riders in the front group today, every time bonus could be vital for a good GC position it seems. No longer of leader in the other competitions, still Davis, Cardoso and Dowsett for Points, KoM and U25.
