The queen stage of the race awaits - surely the stage we will see the biggest time gaps amongst the favourites? Ginanni, Efimkin, Dowsett, Ben Nasser, Sinkewitz and Roy are the leading riders to watch, while sprinter Davis holds the race lead.
For some teams, the best chance of success lies in the breakaway. Indeed, the Tour of Taiwan was won from a breakaway last year. Trying their luck today are Sai-Udomsin, Kasa, Choi, Van Baarle, Die Bie and Gaywood.
Sai-Udomsin and Gaywood take out the two intermediate sprints, with 5 of the break scoring points. Only Kasa misses out, but he wasn't trying to anyway.
Onto the tough 1st climb, and Kasa does get some points in defence of teammate Cardoso's lead. Not that any of the break attacked for the points, just riding over the top. It was Brit Gaywood who led over for top points.
They lead the peloton by 6 minutes, but some riders have attacked away from it. Visconti, Rodrigues, Zeits, and Schurter. Four good climbers, and they ride their way across to the breakaway.
The ten hold a lead of just one minute at 20km to go. Jaguar are the team with the largest presence on front of the peloton, but others are also helping out.
The break know their time is soon to be up, and so a few try to extend their time clear. Oddly it is not the stronger later attackers, but some of the early attackers. De Bie and Gaywood.
All are caught, and into the final 10 kilometres it is up to the race favourites to create the action. But the next attacks are again from second tier riders. Schurter again, plus Durasek, Wang, Alizadeh, Zeits, Rodrigues, Visconti, and Armee.
Going nowhere though as Vespa, Cisco and Vueling keep a firm grip on the front. When with their leaders attack? 5km to go...
The metres tick by and still nothing... There may be more hilly stages to come, but this is surely the best opportunity! The race enters into a tunnel and this encourages Konovalovas to attack.
Schurter, Wang and Durasek tried to gollow but could not, as the Lithuanian champion earns a gap. Now another National champion is trying to join him: Mehr-Wenige
Inside 2km to go and still the favourites defy their tag by doing nothing but ride towards the front of the group. 26 second lead for Konovalovas.
Mehr-Wenige closes in on Konovalovas, but Betancourt leads the peloton up to the pair of them. And Ginanni finally attacks!
Betancourt looks to follow, as does Sinkewitz.
The strongest puncheur in the race leads into the final kilometre, a great position to be in for the Italian. And he is looking strong!
Betancourt fades away, so it is Sinkewitz who leads the pursuit. The gap looks too big...
.. but the German suddenly starts to close in. 400 metres to go.
The likes of Dowsett, Ben Nasser and Roy don't seem to have it in them today, but where is Efimkin? Poorly positioned, but he has now moved into 3rd.
And the Russian is on a charge. Efimkin glides past Sinkewitz towards Ginanni, but the line is close
Timed to perfection, Aleksandr Efimkin powers past to win the stage!
Ginanni seemed in an unbeatable position, but clearly not. 2nd for him as he just holds off a fast finishing Matt Lloyd.
Speaking of Aussies, do we have a new Nolan Hoffman on our hands in Allan Davis? Ben Nasser took 5th on the stage, close enough to Sinkewitz to mean no gap. Match that with 14th on the stage, and Davis remains the race leader.
Efimkin, Ginanni and Lloyd do move up to 2nd, 3rd and 4th though, and with 42 riders in the front group today, every time bonus could be vital for a good GC position it seems. No longer of leader in the other competitions, still Davis, Cardoso and Dowsett for Points, KoM and U25.
