Stage 2 and although some hills are now involved, Allan Davis remains the favourite. The hills could hinder some of his bigger rivals though, as Gatto and Peeters are keen to improve on their podium, and the rest face managers demanding a better result!
And those hills really are steep, as Alex Dowsett finds out trying to chase back on to the peloton after an early crash
7 riders tried to get away, from a range of teams: but couldnt handle the gradient.
By the top though, two did get clear.
Cardoso taking the points from Burlutsky.
Baez joins them, as they continue to do battle over the remaining two climbs, and extend their lead on the peloton.
But each time it is the same order over the top. Three climb victories for Cardoso will send the King of the Mountains jersey to Adira.
Drama in the peloton over the final climb, as a split is caused!
58 in the first group, 66 in the second. Caught out include Bole, Bozic, Nateghi, Uugunbayar, Brea, Gatto, Tzortzakis, Pedersen, Renshaw and Bennett. I'd mention Rasmussen too, but he was already dropped by this stage.
Hollister drive the front group, Vespa lead the chase. The gap is initially a minute, but 4km later we are all back together .... except Rasmussen.
We proceed to move towards the sprint finish then. Despite their best efforts, the break are soon to be caught at 11km to go.
Team leader disaster time, with a CRASH.
It's Hatanaka. And so late in the stage simply guarantees a time loss.
Two trains for the finish, and there is no doubt on whose is strongest. Puncheur team leader for Hollister Betancourt leads Brea and Davis. Gatto is sensibly following, as is Nateghi and Renshaw.
The JK Project train on the other side is in trouble as Uugunbayar leads the sprint off at 3km to go and still cannot gain on Hollister. Peeters must show patience, with Bozic, Murray and Briggs in tow.
And Hollister quickly move over to shut the other train off, Brea setting Davis up nicely - but Gatto is well poised.
And the Australian leads the way into the final kilometre. Gatto could hardly be better positioned, but Davis is confident nonetheless.
Rightly so, as Gatto cannot hold the pace of Davis. Iranian Nateghi now comes round the Italian into 2nd.
But it is a comfortable 2nd victory for Allan Davis. He wins the stage with a big gap behind.
Taking 2nd is Bozic, overcoming bad positioning to take the podium. Even worse positioned was his team leader Ben Nasser, yet the Tunisian almost joins him on the podium.
Just 5th for Ben Nasser though, so no time bonuses. Nateghi is 3rd so Meiji can at least take something from the stage where they lost their best GC hope: Hatanaka will lose 4 and a half minutes.
Rounding out the sprint ranking points are Armee, Schurter and Tzortzakis.
The best young rider jersey remains with Jaguar, but is now held by Alex Dowsett. A shame, as it means we won't see his British champions jersey going into the first of four consecutive hill stages tomorrow.
