It’s the final day in this year’s Tour de Suisse. Though, it’s still everything to play for as stage 9 is both the longest and the toughest of the tour. 216 kilometers take the riders to Sörenberg. On the way the riders have to ride Glaubenbielen and Glaubenberg, which both are .HC categorized climbs.
After yesterday’s performance
Amador
Schleck
are the two biggest favourites, though, the bookmakers still have faith in
Pluchkin
as well.
A breakaway of no less than 15 riders go clear of the peloton on the early kilometers. The riders in it are:
Kruopis
Fiedler
Vermeltfoort
Tolleson
Wynants
Stybar
Stubbe
Izagirre
Craven
Rodriguez Segarra
Offredo
Campero
Caldwell
Oyarzun
Sagan
are the escapees. None of them are great climbers, with
Stubbe
being the best stat wise. After 20 kilometers of racing their gap is up to four minutes.
Back in the bunch it’s
Project 1t4i
at the front for race leader
Sanchez
He succeeded defending the yellow jersey yesterday, but can he do so today too, on a much tougher mountain stage?
As the riders have 134 kilometers left of racing in this year’s Tour de Suisse, the breakaway’s lead goes out to ten minutes! With 15 riders you must think their chances of fighting for the stage win are great. Though, yesterday proved the overall favourites can take a lot of time on a decisive climb.
Vermeltfoort
Oyarzun
have mountain points from previous stages, and they fight it out for the maximum 10 points 113 kilometers away from home. Oyarzun gets them, bringing him to 26 points overall. That’s only six points short of Amador, and with the breakaway being 13 minutes in front of the peloton, he must fancy his chances for the jersey.
Coming to the summit it’s still all
Project 1t4i
at the front of the bunch, but just like yesterday they aren’t really chasing. The escapees lead is up to a massive 15 minutes when the peloton has 113 kilometers left to race.
The breakaway rides over the finishing line in Sörenberg with 84 kilometers left. Eventhough it’s steep climbing you can see them smiling! And that’s with good reasons, as they’re now more than 16 minutes ahead of the peloton.
Oyarzun
is the only one able to attack for the mountain points on Glaubenbielen, and so he gets 20 and the provisional lead in the mountains classification. He’s looking to give his team both the polkadot and the win in the teams classification, as Pendleton’s were second before the stage, but leaders Vesuvio-Accumalux have no one in the breakaway.
He finds himself 16’45 ahead of the peloton with 80 kilometers of racing left.
The peloton, now led by
Clement
comes to the summit 18 minutes later. Not a single rider is dropped, meaning it consists of 158 riders.
55 kilometers away from home the breakaway starts the penultimate climb. It’s 14 kilometers of climbing to the summit of Glaubenberg, but they surely find motivation in the peloton still being 18 minutes behind.
The peloton reaches the foot of the climb 18’15 later, and yes, it is super climbing domestiques
Kluge
Degenkolb
sitting close to the front on the left. It’s still all
Project 1t4i
at the front though. When will the attacks start?
It takes five kilometers of climbing, but then the Venezuelan climber
Rujano
launches a powerful attack! He sits 11th overall, he clearly intends to improve that position!
And this is interesting! 48 kilometers away from home
Rujano
is super strong and just powers clear. Though, 35 seconds behind him follows
Pluchkin
Brajkovic
Fothen
and they’ve gapped the peloton with 50 seconds! None of them except Fothen was able to follow the best yesterday, could this be their salvation?
Up front, it’s
Stybar
leading the breakaway over the summit. Though, they’re suddenly in a bit of panic, as the Venezuelan climber chasing behind has taken back three minutes in four kilometers of racing! Though, with a lead of 12’40 41 kilometers away from home they should be safe.
With 3.4 kilometers left of Glaubenberg for the peloton
Machado
launches an attack to try to catch up with the dangerous four that already find themselves a good way clear of the bunch. He’s followed by
Kangert
Denifl
Schleck
Pedraza
It has been a massive climb by
Rujano!
He finds himself 10’30 behind the breakaway at the summit, which also is two minutes in front of what’s left of the peloton!
50 seconds behind the Venezuelan follow
Brajkovic
Pluchkin
Fothen
with
Machado
about to join them. The trio is more than a minute in front of the peloton.
Another 30 seconds behind it’s
Denifl
making his way over the top of Glaubenberg, with the peloton in sight just behind him. And yes, two certain riders have just attacked….
It’s
Schleck
Amador
trying to shake race leader
Sanchez!
Though, they were running out of road rising, and quickly sits down, but that must be a sign of what is to come on the final climb to Sörenberg. The yellow jersey leads the bunch 12’20 behind the early escapees.
Naming it a bunch is actually quite an exaggeration. Only 15 riders are left, from top to bottom they are:
Schleck
Amador
Denifl
Frank
Kohl
Kiserlovski
Sanchez
Kangert
Costagli
Rodriguez
Pedraza
Kern
Grivko
Samwel
Gusev
They’re heading downhill with 40 kilometers left. They’re 1’40 behind
Rujano
and one minute behind
Pluchkin
Machado
Brajkovic
Fothen
Up at the very front, it’s a big stage win to play for, and weak climbers
Sagan
Wynants
Vermeltfoort
launch the first attacks on the flat with 19 kilometers left! It’s a strong attack, and they quickly get a gap of 25 seconds to the other escapees.
Though, as the best climber in the group
Stubbe
really wants this win. He simply reels them back in three kilometers later, and it’s again 15 riders fighting for the win. They’re 8’40 ahead of
Rujano
19.1 kilometers away from home,
Pluchkin
Machado
Fothen
Brajkovic
are caught by the chasers, which only leaves the Venezuelan climber up front of the overall favourites.
Though, with 15.6 kilometers left
Rujano
is caught by
Pluchkin
Schleck
who have attacked clear of the bunch!
Brajkovic
just behind is desperately trying to bridge the gap.
Two kilometers later, all the favourites are back together after a strong chase from especially
Kiserlovski
Amador
Though, one rider has left the others behind…
It’s 4th overall
Kohl
making his move for overall glory here in Switzerland! He quickly opens a gap of 31 seconds, it’s a strong attack!
But no, it’s not the Austrian’s day here. He’s caught with 8.1 kilometers to, as
Pluchkin
Fothen
launch another attack. Don’t they ever get tired!?
It looks like we’re watching the Moldovan at his best today! No chance for
Fothen
Costagli
to follow him, and he motors clear one minute clear of the other favourites and 15 seconds of the mentioned duo with seven kilometers left.
That makes time for
Amador
to make his move, and what a move it is! He flies past
Kern
Rujano
who also tried to follow the Moldovan.
Schleck
desperately tries to hang on to the Costa Rican’s pace!
Difficult times for race leader
Sanchez!
He is gapped by the mentioned riders, and now he tries to bridge with
Kohl
Pedraza
following him. Though, it doesn’t look like he has the needed power.
Up front it is quite surprisingly
Fiedler
Rodriguez Segarra
gapping the others with an attack four kilometers away from home.
Wynants
is in pursuit on the right side of the road, while the other 12 breakaway riders are hiding behind the car.
What an effort!
Amador
just thunders clear of
Schleck
and storms past
Pluchkin
in the process. This is a massive attack!
Behind him it’s
Pluchkin
about to be caught by
Schleck
Fothen
with
Costagli
doing his best to hold on.
It gives us this situation when the Costa Rican finally sits down 2.400 meters away from home:
Amador
leads
Schleck
Pluchkin
with 28 seconds.
13 seconds behind the duo follows
Fothen
with
Costagli
another 13 seconds behind the German.
13 is the magic number here, as
Kohl
finds himself 13 seconds behind the Italian
Costagli
25 seconds behind Kohl comes
Rujano
Pedraza
Kern
Sanchez
-----------------------------
Back to the breakaway as they go under the kite being all together again (picture missing)! It’s
Craven
leading them out, closely followed by wild card rider
Izagirre
Here comes
Stubbe!
The Belgian makes his move 600 meters from the line, now it’s only a question of who has most energy left.
200 meters to the line and
Stubbe
is looking strong! But
Craven
is determined to not let this stage win slip, as he keeps his lead, with the finishing line being incredibly close.
Stubbe
makes it on the line! What a finish that was, and he denies
Craven
the big win here on the final day in Tour de Suisse. The Namibian must settle for second place.
Behind them it’s
Izagirre
taking home a podium ahead of
Tolleson
Campero
Caldwell
Stybar
Offredo
Rodriguez Segarra
Oyarzun
Amador
is on the final kilometer of racing now, and he’s looking good for the overall win! He has a superb gap of 35 seconds down to
Schleck
Pluchkin
with race leader
Sanchez
being several minutes behind. This could be a big day for the Swiss team.
Schleck
is about to leave
Pluchkin
behind in the sprint,
with
Fothen
following behind, just ahead of
Kohl
Costagli
Amador
almost catches slowest rider from the breakaway
Vermeltfoort
as he crosses the line 2’20 behind the stage winner.
Half a minute behind the Costa Rican race winner comes
Schleck
with
Pluchkin
not far behind.
It’s a good ride from
Fothen
as well, and seing his manager said a top 10 was out of the question after the team time trial, he must be satisfied with a placing well inside the top 8, at least. Also, the two final mountain stages has really proved themselves as real tests for the riders, with gaps having opened “everywhere” between the top favourites.
Kohl
Costagli
Pedraza
come home about four minutes behind today’s stage winner.
Here he is! Just behind
Rujano
Machado
race leader
Sanchez
together with
Kern
sprint home. It was a brave defense of the yellow jersey, but he was simply not good enough. He is safe home about two minutes behind Amador.
