After two days of no racing and a surprising rest for the riders, we’re back with the eight stage from Bischosfzell to Arosa. It’s only 146 kilometers long, but it’s a tough mountain stage with a steep climb to the finish line.
Favourites for the stage win are
Schleck
Pluchkin
Machado
The big question is if
Sanchez
can defend his yellow jersey. Boasson Hagen proved that the jersey gave wings on the first mountain stage of the race, being able to follow the climbers on a tough climb. Can the Spaniard do the same? The bookmakers have at least listed him as a rider that “can’t be underestimated”.
It’s a sunny day in Bischoszell, though the wind is quite strong. That may make the racing even tougher, but we shall see in the final kilometers.
The first 40 kilometers of the stage consists of several unclassified hills, and there are a lot of attacking. With 111 kilometers to the finish line 12 riders are up front, one minute ahead of the peloton. The riders are:
Kennaugh
Clement
Jelloul
Bookwalter
Nordhaug
Wyss
Haavardsholm
Bauer
Grabovski
Rodriguez
Donald
Selander
That’s a strong group of riders with Rodriguez and Kennaugh being the strongest riders. Though, they only have a minute’s lead!
Favilli
would probably have wanted to be up front, considering he leads the mountain classification. But 43 kilometers into the stage he’s unlucky and crashes. Though, he continues the race.
As the peloton has started racing the long flat section before the final climb,
Project 1t4i
seems comfortable letting the 12 mentioned riders be today’s breakaway. Their lead is up to 2’30. But look at the formation back in the bunch! The crosswinds are strong, with the wind indicator saying no less than 48! That could make for some challenging climbing later today.
The breakaway co-operates well with everyone taking their turns at the front. With 61 kilometers left they’ve extended their lead to 4’51. It is starting to look well for the best climbers in here, can they manage to deny the big climbers back in the peloton the stage win?
Kennaugh
rolls through the intermediate sprint with 57 kilometers left first, with escapees lead still rising. Now it’s up to five minutes.
41 kilometers away from home the breakaway rides through the second and final intermediate sprint of the day.
Grabovski
leads them, and it’s starting to look really good for a stage win! They’re no less than six minutes ahead of the peloton.
Back in the bunch it’s still
Project 1t4i
doing all the work for race leader
Sanchez
They’ve probably decided that it is a clever decision to let a breakaway stay clear and deny the favourites any bonus seconds. But will they succeed? At least they’re definitely not in real chase mode as they cross a bridge 40 kilometers away from home. The gap is 6’15.
Attacks!
Denifl
Úran
decide to have a go at it with 38 kilometers left, and they’re still on the flat! Though, if you look behind you see
Project 1t4i
all over the road, not chasing at all. They quickly establish a lead of 40 seconds.
Rienda Segura
also attacks, and it forces a response from the other teams. Project 1t4i has vanished from the front, now it’s
Gusev
Tolleson
Van Goolen
Livramento
Franzoi
chasing. And they’re actually chasing for real!
Though, the breakaway is still no less than six minutes ahead of the peloton as they start to climb with 29 kilometers left.
As the peloton starts to climb,
Pluchkin
Rujano
immediately attack! They see the trio that attacked earlier in front, and the defending champion of Tour de Suisse is after them with 28 kilometers to the finishing line!
But all the attacks only see the bunch come together again with 26 kilometers to go. Predictably that only leads to more attacks.
Denifl
Amador
Rujano
Úran
Pedraza
Kohl
try to force a selection here, early on the climb.
25 kilometers to go and a nice group of riders have managed to get a gap of 58 seconds back to the bunch, where
Brajkovic
is desperately chasing. The six climbers that have a lead back to the peloton are
Úran
Rujano
Fothen
Pluchkin
Denifl
Rienda Segura
And they’re really flying up the climb! The early escapees are suddenly only 2’20 ahead of them.
Though, they’re caught one kilometer later, which only sees
Pluchkin
launch another attack! The Moldovan must feel super strong today. He’s followed by
Denifl
Fothen
Brajkovic
Rujano
Amazing! They catch the breakaway with 24.4 kilometers left! That’s quite some climbing from the favourites. And look,
Pluchkin
Fothen
Denifl
didn’t stop racing, they went straight past. Race leader
Sanchez
realizes this is a critical situation, as he also immediately goes right to the breakway, picking up the chase.
But he can’t make the catch! As the riders cross the mountain sprint with 21 kilometers left
Pluchkin
Fothen
Brajkovic
find themselves 40 seconds clear of the peloton.
Denifl
wasn’t able to hold on to their fast pace and is now back in the bunch.
Now the riders start a long false flat, which rises with 1-4 percent the next 15 kilometers.
Though, even with the road only rising with a tiny 2 percent, there are attacks in the peloton consisting of 34 riders. It’s
Kern
Monsalve
picking up the pace, trying to catch the trio in the lead.
14 kilometers away from home
Samwel
catches them all and his captain
Schleck
immediately attacks! The same goes for
Pluchkin
Kern
You should also be reminded that we’re still on the flat! This is amazing racing from the top favourites.
6.500 meters to go, and it isn’t much of a gap two of the world’s best climbers have managed to get! They’re only 14 seconds ahead of the bunch, consisting of 35 riders.
But they do manage to hold on to their lead, and with 4.7 kilometers left their gap is up to 16 seconds! That sees race leader
Sanchez
take the front of the chasers, giving it everything to defend his jersey.
3.5 kilometers to go, we’re about to start the real climbing again and
Fothen
attacks!
The German catches the two strong leaders, and he looks to continue his attack! No one is immediately following him, but you can see
Machado
in the middle of the bunch trying, but he struggles with traffic!
2.5 kilometers to go and
Machado
is good to go! His acceleration is huge, no chance for race leader
Sanchez
to immediately pick up on such a pace.
It’s an incredible defense of the yellow jersey!
Sanchez
catches them both with only 1.700 meters to go. That makes time for
Schleck
to have another go at it!
Together with
Amador,
Schleck
hold a lead of 15 seconds as they’re approaching the one kilometer to go banner! Is this the moment where the race leader has to give up his dreams of continuing in the yellow jersey?
As the chasers go under the one kilometer to go banner we also have a real selection, finally! Only eight riders are able to cope with the high pace, those being
Machado
Sanchez
Kohl
Kiserlovski
Fothen
Pedraza
Frank
Samwel
About 20 seconds behind follow
Pluchkin
Rujano
Rodriguez
Brajkovic
That’s a big disappointment from three of the best climbers in the race, but the early attacking must have taken too much energy out of them.
Up front
Amador
opens the sprint from the front with 700 meters left! This could also be the fight for the yellow jersey, as they still have a gap, and only one second separates them before today’s stage!
Machado
tries to close the gap, and in the process he has established a tiny lead over
Sanchez
and the others in that group.
Schleck
seems unable to find his way around the Costa Rican, and with 400 meters left it’s still
Amador
pushing for the win at the front!
And there it is!
Amador
takes a huge win on the eight day of racing in Switzerland.
Schleck
must settle for second place. Big question now is if the judges will give the duo a gap, and thus give the yellow jersey to Amador.
Machado
comes home third, only a few seconds behind Schleck. That was a good sprint from the Portuguese, and he’s looking for a top five in the overall standings.
Kiserlovski
leads the group over the finishing line. Just behind him follows
Sanchez
Kohl
Pedraza
Fothen
Samwel
Frank
And look at Frank! He looks untouchable as he celebrates his captain’s win. He’ll also climb well inside the top 10 himself after today’s great performance.
Pluchkin
comes home almost a minute behind the stage winner. That must be disappointing for his team. He’s followed by
Rodriguez
Rujano
Brajkovic
Arguably, the biggest loser of today’s stage was
Intxausti
The Spaniard comes home a massive 7’52 behind Amador. He lost contact with the other favourites on the second category climb about 27 kilometers away from home, and he was never able to see them again. A real shame for the Spaniard and his team.
The judges have finally made up their mind about time gaps. None of them are given between the first ten riders, and it means
Sanchez
defends his yellow jersey by ONE second! What a ride from the Spaniard! It’s a really close GC, with six riders being less than a minute behind Sanchez.
