Tour de Suisse - Stage 5
SportingNonsense
13 riders went clear, but by the top of the Klausenpass, KoM Vitor Rodrigues was on his own.

After the descent, 56km of uphill riding follows, at varied percentages. Savoldelli has to let go of the pack early on - perhaps slightly injured? Noone really takes control of the 36 man peleton, and suddenly - a gap appears.

After 10 kilometres. the split is closed down and they all stop relaying - the only casualties in the chase were Domina's Cataldo, Horrach and Rubiera. It wasnt long before another split occured though, and this time it looks dangerous as it involves Cunego - who is relaying hard.

Dessel is tucked in his wheel and also there are Vila, Intxausti, Pecharroman, Moreau, Gustov and Ardila.

Dessel helps Cunego and soon they have got rid of everyone else.

Moreau, Intxausti, Vila and Pecharroman (All 78 MO) follow, while the rest drop back to the main chasing group. Menchov soon wakes up and attacks, he is countered by others but is by far and away the strongest. He comes close to catching Dessel and Cunego, who have just caught the former lead rider on the road, Rodrigues.

Following these 4 is a group of 8: Piepoli, Karpets, Perez Cuapio, Brajkovic, Sella, Moreau, Ricco and Intxausti. Vila and Pecharroman trail them and former breakaway riders Zaugg and Brandt lie inbetween them and the remnants of the peleton who really dont seem to care. The biggest names there are Parra and Medina.

Cunego has soon had enough of Dessel and attacks away from the frenchman.

Cunego reaches the summit with a 25 second lead over the pairing of Dessel and Menchov. While the next group of 7 follows a minute later - the 8th rider, Intxausti, was dropped near the summit and manages to regain contact with the group in the descent.

Cunego is a superior descender to both Dessel and Menchov, and it shows as he pulls further and further away until he stops pulling away as he has already won!

Menchov takes 2nd ahead of Dessel.

Moreau is 4th.
