Tour de Suisse - Stage 8

A stage made for sprinters and their last chance to take a stage win, but a breakaway could also make it to the finish line. Vanderbiest and Granjel Cabrera each one a stage so far and they are the big favorites to take the win today as well

On the first categorized climb of the day, 6 riders went clear: Efimkin, Sys, Stenersen, Speirs, De Winde and Bret

Efimkin was clearly the strongest one and he took the first summit of the day. He did the same thing on the second climb, but this time only Sys and Stenersen were able to follow him, the other 3 losing the contact sooner or later on the climb

Sys, Stenersen and Efimkin entered the last 100 kilometers of the stage with an advantge of 9 minutes in front of the pack. It was a very good gap to have at that point of the race but the bad news for them was that they were only 3, which was a small number of riders for a breakaway that was trying to make it to the finish

And on the third climb Stenersen cracked, only Sys being able to follow Efimkin, who was looking unstoppable

On the following climb, it was Sys' turn to let go of Efimkin's wheel, the Russian being left alone in front of the race with still a long way to go before the finish

Efimkin took both of the intermediate sprints as well and entered the last 50 kilometers of the stage with an advantage of 4 minutes in front of the pack. The Starbucks rider was also the only escape left in front of the pack on the last climb of the day

And at the last summit of the stage things were looking pretty good for the Russian, who still had 2 minutes left of his advantage

On the downhill that followed, Mori led the pack for Sony Ericsson and the gap was of 1 minute and a half at 10 kilometers to go. But only 5 kilometers later, Efimkin was only 30 seconds in front of the pack

No team was able to control the sprint even though UBS and Carmeuse looked a little bit stronger than the others. Still at the 1 kilometer banner the sprinters, who were already launching themselves to the finish line, managed to caught Efimkin, who came very close to winning the stage but lost it by only just

500 meters before the finish, Roelandts who looked to be the strongest sprinter during the whole sprint made his move and took the lead, with Granjel Cabrera and Richeze in his wheel

But neither of them were able to stop the Belgian who brings a very important win for Carmeuse in their attempt to avoid the relegation this season

Granjel Cabrera finished second and took the points jersey from Phinney, but the American has a great chance to take it back in the final time - trial, where he is also aiming for the yellow jersey, while Pires has already taken the prize for the best climber, with no climbs in tomorrow's time - trial and final stage of the race
