Tour de Suisse - Stage 3
alexkr00
The third day in Suisse is also one where we should see time gaps between the favorites but not one for the pure sprinters either. It could be a perfect opportunity for an attacker to grab a victory, while Visconti will be definitely enjoying the yellow jersey won after a tremendous effort in the previous stage

Six riders got away in the day's breakaway. Pires, 4th in the GC and also one of the lucky escapes of yesterday's stage, was there, while again a team had two riders in the breakaway. This time it was Lipton and not Energie Diesel like yesterday

The escapes were: Pires, Korzh, Bono, Scheunemann, Mironov and Nooytens
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0001-12.png

The first intermediate sprint was won by Nooytens, while the second and the last one was taken by Bono

On the first climb the group started to break apart, Korzh and Mironov, quickly being dropped, followed by Scheunemann and then Nooytens

Only Bono was able to follow Pires' wheel, who still had a quite a lot of energy left in his legs after yesterday's great effort
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0002-8.png

And at the top of the climb the Energie Diesel rider powered away from Bono to take over the KoM jersey from Visconti who had no chance of scoring any points on this climb
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0003-6.png

Starbucks didn't seem very interested reducing the gap on the climb and the pack was more than 8 minutes behind Pires, which made the Portuguese the virtual wearer of the yellow jersey as well
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0004-6.png

Even with a mediocre pace in the pack, a lot of riders were in trouble and had to let go, including some of the big sprinters such as Avelino, Castaned or Forster

Bono rejoined Pires in the lead on the downhill and even though they had a huge lead there was still a long way until the finish, which didn't make their mission an easy one
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0005-4.png

Behind them, Rolland suffered a puncture which made half of the Auber team drop wait for him but that still wasn't enough to bring the French man back in the action

Pires and Bono had no chance against the pack after all and they were even caught before the last climb of the day started. At the top Rujano powered away from the others to take the KoM points, in front of Ardila and Barredo
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0008-4.png

On the downhill, three riders got away from the pack and built a good gap quite quickly: Rogers - Brajkovic - Devolder. But they didn't work together too well in the end and entered the last 10 kilometers of the stage with an advantage of only 20 seconds
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0012-3.png

The pack had no problems bringing them back in and the stage headed to a mass sprint.

The sprint seemed to go Sony Ericsson's way with Mori doing a perfect job for Granjel Cabrera, but when the carousel, with all those ups and downs, at the end of the stage started Mori lost it and as he was heading towards the second rows of the pack all the sprinters were caught behind him
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0016-1.png

The actual sprint found a Sony rider leading the pack though. Anza was in front, quickly followed by the yellow jersey wearer and yesterday's winner, Visconti, Pluchkin, Rogers and many other GC favorites
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0017-3.png

Pluchkin made his move in the next kilometers and he reached the 1 km banner in the lead, followed by a mixture of GC favorites and sprinters, who were gaining back some of the ground lost in the sprint preparations
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0022-4.png

But inside the final kilometer, it was Phinney who was surprisingly fast and he took the lead from Pluchking with less than 500 meters left before the finish
i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac168/alexkr10/PCM0026-3.png

And Phinney takes his second win out of three, but it's still not enough to take back any of the three jerseys won in the prologue and lost in the previous stage
